"The Light Is Still Shining"

"The light shines in the darkness" (John 1:5). "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them" (Ephesians 5:11).

For about 7½ years we served the Lord Jesus Christ in New England, pastoring a church about 35 miles south of Boston in Taunton, Massachusetts. Once we drove through Salem, Massachusetts, which is about 16 miles north of Boston. Although Salem is best known for the witch trials held in late 1600's it is still a center for witchcraft and other deeds of darkness. In fact it's known at the "witch city". * I recall sensing the darkness even as we drove through.

There are several Bible-preaching churches in the city and certainly in the surrounding area. What a mighty job they have in letting the light of Christ shine through them to the darkness that pervades the area. Today is a very significant day for witchcraft and satanic activities in Salem (and elsewhere), and yet the true church will have mission outreaches. The light of Christ will shine as they expose the fruitless deeds of darkness. May the Lord bless these worthwhile efforts! Thankfully, God has a light shining in the midst of this darkness and the true church has seen many people turn from darkness to God's marvelous light.

The first daily verse fundamentally speaks of Christ. He is the Light and indeed He shines in the darkness. Wherever you live there is darkness, although some places are much more spiritually dark, such as Salem and other caverns where those of satanic devotion gather. By contrast there is a comparatively remarkable amount of spiritual light here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Brooksyne and I ate at a restaurant last week and we reflected on our first visit to this county some 25 years ago. We were amazed to see book racks in the entryway of restaurants and other retail stores that carried Christian books exclusively.* Some businesses stock devotional booklets on the counter by the cash registers free for the taking. We've grown accustomed to these local Christian blessings and often take it for granted.

The verb "shines" is in the present tense and can be understood as "the light keeps on giving light." Today, all over the world serious believers are allowing the light of Christ to shine through them. This light exposes the fruitless deeds of darkness and this is the essence of spiritual warfare. Darkness hates the light. Yet faithful followers of Christ will continue to let their light shine, essentially reflecting the Light, who is Christ. May each reader today shine brightly!

In our second daily verse the Apostle Paul makes a very unambiguous statement. "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." It's a call desperately needed in our culture, but one in which by obeying will subject us to ridicule among many who "love the darkness rather than the light" (John 3:19). You see, when we get used to the darkness it just may not seem as dark anymore. Remember the childhood phrase "my eyes got used to the dark." I believe that can be true of our spiritual eyes as well. As the old song says we must "in the light of His presence continually dwell."

As for me and my house we will stand up for the One True God today!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily Prayer: Jesus, You created us to be people who function and thrive by light. Your placement of the sun by day and the moon by night is the way You provide for our physical needs enabling us to see as we carry out our multitude of duties. As important as light is for the eyes to see, it is even more essential that the eyes of our heart see the magnificent light of Your glory. As we walk in Your light we will be able to discern that which is evil from that which is good. Jesus, we know that goodness cannot be a partner with wickedness for there is no harmony between You and the devil. We do not cringe in fear at the presence of spiritual darkness, for we know that Your Spirit who lives in us is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. We partner with You as we walk in Your truth and dispel the darkness everywhere we go. Amen.

II Corinthians 6:14,15, I John 4:4b (portions of these verses were implemented into the prayer)

Note from Brooksyne: We usually go to Plymouth when we visit New England since it is a favorite site we often traveled to when we lived there. Plymouth is a lovely setting where most of the town's activities are located right on the harbor next to Plymouth Rock and a full-sized replica of the Mayflower. We were grieved to hear a few years ago about a group of satanic priests and witches from Salem who have settled in this small town. When we were browsing the storefronts a couple years ago we saw them in their places of business. There was an instant sense of darkness that filled the air as we viewed them from the other side of the glass windows. I immediately sent up an arrow prayer for God to bring them out of darkness into His marvelous life-saving light. We are friends with a former pastor of Plymouth who frequently conducted prayer walks throughout the community. We actually joined his church for one of these prayer walks years ago. What a wonderful way to saturate prayer into an area where spiritual darkness resides.

One more note: We receive many comments and inquiries from our readers regarding interest in the lifestyle of the Amish. One of the very popular writers featured in the book racks mentioned in today's devotional is Beverly Lewis. She's a fictional writer but writes the stories in a non-fiction setting. If you read her works you will learn alot about Lancaster County. Mrs. Lewis grew up in Lancaster and her grandmother was originally Amish. Of course this stirred her interest in the Amish people and she has a great respect for them and is close to many of them. Though her stories are fiction-based the traditions, lifestyles, and religious beliefs of the Amish are factual. She consults with several Amish friends who live here as she is writing her books to check out facts, etc. Though she has authored 70 books, she is best-known for the first three books that are now compiled into one volume; "Heritage of Lancaster County."

Heritage of Lancaster County, 3 Volumes in 1Heritage of Lancaster County, 3 Volumes in 1
By Beverly Lewis / Bethany House Publishers

The Shunning: Katie Lapp stumbles upon a satin infant gown in the dusty leather trunk of her parents attic and determines to discover the story behind it. Why would her mother, a Plain woman who embraces the ways of the Old Order, hide such a beautiful worldly gown?
The Confession: Now torn from her close-knit community in the frightening ordeal known as shunning, Katie sets out on a journey of discovery.
The Reckoning: Katie--now known as Katherine--is living the fancy life she always dreamed of. Yet she still grieves the loss of her Amish family and longs for the peace that reigned in her mother's heart.

Shine, Jesus, Shine! (audio file)

For many years we've enjoyed and sung the music of Graham Kendrick, a British musician who takes a strong stand for Christ. His lyrics are rich and very Scripturally based. It is amazing how many well-known songs he has written!

"The Path Of Life"

"You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand" (Psalm 16:11).

Near our home is a majestic old estate dating back prior to the Civil War. In fact it's near a beautiful trout filled spring that runs between the estate and a church settled in the early 1700's. The church building was the first log cabin church built in the United States. Years later it was burned to the ground and rebuilt in stone.

We enjoy walking through the grounds and along the beautiful paths. Today's photo is of one of those paths but really, it doesn't do the scene justice! I just can't convey in a photo the smells and sounds that are part of the experience.

Scripture in numerous places speaks of the "path of life" with today's passage being the first. It's from a Psalm of David, written some 3,000 years ago. In addressing God he asserts, "You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand."

There are several references to the path of life in the Proverbs such as "The path of life leads upward for the wise."

But the final reference to the "path of life" in Scripture may surprise you. Peter quotes this Psalm verbatim in his sermon on the day of Pentecost making it clear that ultimately David was referring to Jesus Christ as the path of life! Of course He Himself tells us, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

I thank God for making known to me the path of life! What a great joy and blessing to follow Christ.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen C. Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, I consider today the upward path of life laid out for those who are wise. It might not be the shortest, most traveled, or least difficult trail. At various turns the incline may be so steep to the point of forcing me on all fours. But that's a posture in which I'm most humbled. It forces me to kneel down before You, the Lord my Maker. Your strength is perfect when my strength is gone. It is a place of recognition where I realize it is no longer my strength but it is your perfect strength I walk in. It is no longer my plan but Your perfect plan I walk in. It is no longer my wisdom but Your perfect wisdom I walk in. You give perfect direction and adequate strength to walk the upward path that leads to life everlasting. Thank You that I will never walk the path of life alone, for You lead the way as You make my feet like hind's feet on high places. Amen.

Note from Brooksyne: We've included the song "You'll Never Walk Alone", by Point of Grace. It's a beautiful page with the lyrics included and goes well with today's message. As an early Christmas present for Ester I bought her a ticket to see Point of Grace on Nov. 30. Of course she needed an escort, so Stephen bought me an early Christmas present so I could accompany her. It worked out pretty well to my advantage! Open this page to hear the song.

"The Voice Of Truth"

Micaiah declared, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!" (2 Chronicles 18:27).

Like many readers I have an interest in Bible prophesy. This Saturday I will be attending a prophesy conference at Lancaster Bible College. It will be interesting hearing from Tim LaHaye and others and their perspective on how current events may have a role in Bible prophesy and the culmination of this age. I do appreciate perspectives on Bible prophesy, but have grown very skeptical when one with great dogmatism claims to know exact dates or the exact steps Christ will take in fulfilling His future promises.

But prophesy has so often been used wrongly. Over the years I have heard and read attempts at very specific prophetical pronouncements concerning the return of the Lord with a "thus saith the Lord" type of authority. Many have come up with fanciful conjectures of just how things will be along with proof texts from the Bible. Thus far one by one their theories have been proven wrong. Many will recall a book titled, "88 reasons Christ will return in 1988." Wow, that was almost twenty years ago! And we're still here.

I have also seen much abuse in regard to a practice in some churches called "personal prophecy" where a person with a presumed gift seeks to direct others in regard to the will of the Lord. Many years ago we had a troubled couple in our congregation visit a prominent and "deeply spiritual" type minister for counseling. He pronounced a "personal prophecy" that they would have a child and this would "be the answer to their troubles". The fact was that they already had two children and their marriage and family was a mess. Not long after this their marriage broke up.

Yesterday's message was about a little-known prophet who took a stand for the Lord although he was in the minority. Micaiah stated, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says" (2 Chronicles 18:13).

In the context surrounding our Scripture today the kings had consulted the prophets regarding their battle plans. "Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand." In fact one of them by the name of Zedekiah added some flamboyant visual effects similar to the style of some of the TV evangelists of our time!

But Micaiah's prophetical word is summed up in this simple pronouncement: "The LORD has decreed disaster for you." That's certainly not what Ahab wanted to hear! It was very specific and Ahab was told he would not return from the battle alive.

So Ahab attempted to silence the prophet with these orders, "Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely."

Micaiah's final word is a great statement of prophetical responsibility, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!" (2 Chronicles 18:27).

Notice the responsibility Micaiah took. He forthrightly stated that if Ahab returned safely "the LORD has not spoken through me." I have seen quite a few miss the mark in situations that parallel our story today, but just go on to try again and again. Guess enough on issues and sometimes they're going to get it right! This is true of astrologists as well.

Ahab ignored the counsel of Micaiah and died on the battlefield. An amazing detail about Scripture that intrigues me is that the very last we read about Micaiah is that he's in prison waiting for Ahab to return safely. There's no record of what happened to him after Ahab did not return safely. He will be one of the prophets I'm going to want "the rest of the story" from when I get to heaven!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, far too often we want quick fixes or want to know the exact means in which You are going to work in our lives. But even as the Gospel is in ways a mystery unfolding, so is Your leading in our lives. If we had it all figured out and knew exactly how everything was going to fall into place, we'd be walking by sight rather than trusting by faith. We know that "faith is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see." We are better acquainted with Your plans for our lives as You have revealed Your will through prophets of old and modern day prophets who are consistent with the Scripture laid out before us. Help us to be reassured today as we keep the words of Solomon before us, "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." May Your Voice of Truth always be our guide in testing the spirits of those who are quick to say, "Thus saith the Lord" or "God told me…" to see if they are truly representative of Your voice speaking to us. Amen.

Verses used in our daily prayer:
*Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)
*Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

Quiz answer: Yesterday I wrote how I was recently giving a teaching on the prophets and had shared with the class how we often subdivide the portion of the Bible written by the prophets into the Major Prophets and Minor Prophets. I pointed out that there were five books in the Major Prophets and twelve books in the Minor Prophets. I then asked the class, "So how many prophets are there?" One class member instantly answered "sixteen", but his quick math was off by one (a mistake any of us could make.) Five plus twelve equals seventeen! I stunned the class when I noted that actually he was right, so for an online stump quiz can anyone tell me why? The answer – One prophet, Jeremiah, has two books written by him and both are reckoned as "Major Prophets" (Jeremiah and Lamentations). As one response noted, "he did double-duty"! By the way something to remember is that there is no difference in inspiration or importance between the two sets.

As we consider a supplemental song for today's message a great song written in the last several years is by Casting Crowns titled, "Voice of Truth" (mp3 audio)

One of my favorite perspectives regarding end-time events is from Joel Rosenberg, a messianic Jew with an orthodox Jewish background. However I consider his material just a perspective.

"What God Says"

But Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says." (2 Chronicles 18:13).

"What's popular is not always right and what's right is not always popular." This is a quote that hung as a banner in the youth room at our church in New England for many years. Actually I think it might be even more accurate to state, "What's popular is often not right and what's right is often not popular."

I was recently giving a teaching on the prophets and shared how we often subdivide the portion of the Bible written by the prophets into the Major Prophets and Minor Prophets. I pointed out that there were five books in the Major Prophets and twelve books in the Minor Prophets. I then asked the class, "So how many prophets are there?" One class member instantly answered, "sixteen." His quick math was off by one. Five plus twelve equals seventeen!

I stunned the class when I noted that actually he was right, so for an online stump quiz can anyone tell me why? (I'll provide the answer tomorrow.)

The class was an overview of all the prophets and I pointed out that there were also prophets who did not have Biblical books named after them such as Elijah, Elisha and Nathan. One of the lesser known is a prophet by the name of Micaiah (we pronounce this like Isaiah since its spelling is very similar). His story is told in parallel accounts in 1 Kings 22 and 2 Chronicles 18. He was a prophet to the apostate Northern Kingdom and was known for telling it like it is.

Jehoshaphat and Ahab had entered into an ungodly alliance and were preparing for an attack. Jehoshaphat had agreed to proceed but then remembered that he should seek the will of the Lord. We all do that at times don't we!

King Ahab got together four hundred prophets that assured them of victory. Wow, that must have surely been a "sign" that God is in this but Jehoshaphat, on the face of it, detected that these were false prophets for he asked, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?"

Indeed there was but Ahab did not want to consult him! His response is like many who don't want to hear what God says, "There is still one man through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah."

So Micaiah was called and pressured by the messenger to give a prophetic word agreeable to the other 400. "Look, all the prophets are promising victory for the king. Be sure that you agree with them and promise success."

He didn't succumb to their ungodly counsel and his response, although obscure, is one of the greatest statements of faith and acts of obedience in the Bible. "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says."

Today we sure need to be like Micaiah who won't go along with the crowd just to accommodate others. Our counsel and lifestyle must reflect the mandate set forth in Holy Scripture, not the changing pulse of society.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Jesus, I pray for Holy Spirit power to enable me to give godly counsel based upon Your inerrant Scripture. It is not from the media or from current polls that I form my opinions since I know Satan is the god of this age, plotting to confuse, distort and mislead. My confidence is firmly established in the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures which are able to make me wise for salvation. They inspire, teach, convict, correct, comfort and model for me the way I am to live my earthly life. Your Holy Word brings understanding and maturity as You develop godly character through the course of my daily activities. May I never sugar coat Your commands because I want to please others who differ with Your authority. I want to always honor Your Word in all I say and do. As I look in the mirror of truth, help it to reflect this godly intent. If the reflection shows otherwise, help me to make the necessary changes in accordance with Your Word. In Your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Please note: I think we've fixed the distortion problem we've had the last two days.

"Falling or Standing Firm"
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith" (1 Peter 5:8,9a).

On our way to the church where we are presently serving as interim pastor near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania we travel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It's on a section that crosses the Susquehanna River where they are building a new bridge which is high above the water below. In August a worker fell to his death off the new bridge and surely this has heightened both safety procedures, as well as personal awareness of the danger. I can hardly imagine a day goes by that the other workers at some point don't recall the fall. I know that practically every time I cross the bridge I think about it.*

After we cross the bridge there's a large billboard for an "adult" bookstore, tempting drivers traveling west for another kind of deadly fall. I won't describe it but I am sure it feeds the lustful fantasies that have entrapped scores. So many have fallen in this way. An ancient strategy of the enemy is to tempt, trap, or to create feelings of dissatisfaction.

This may seem like strange logic, but the continued work of the tempter and his many minions actually increases my faith in God. The Scriptures are so clear regarding good and evil and the cosmic battle we are all in the midst of, whether we acknowledge it or not. We are not spectators but active participants in this battle.

As disgusted as I am at the constant assault I need to cry out to God for renewed strength and the will to "be self-controlled and alert." A Study Bible I use makes this observation in regard to this phrase, "Perhaps Peter remembered his own difficulty in staying awake during our Lord's agony in Gethsemane."

In scores of ways our "ancient foe" continues to work his deadly woe. He's adept at the latest technology and now scores are battling various forms of "internet pornography addiction."

"Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." Matthew Henry comments on this verse. "The whole design of Satan is to devour and destroy souls. He always is contriving whom he may ensnare to eternal ruin. Our duty plainly is, to be sober; to govern both the outward and the inward man by the rules of temperance."

Today may we all determine, regardless of the nature of Satan's attack in our area of weakness, that we will "resist him, standing firm in the faith." That's the key to Spirit-empowered victory.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Jesus, though Satan's temptations swirl about me in many forms and in various venues I resist the enemy's desire to reside in my life. Even as the devil seeks to wrap his noxious tentacles around my heart, I stand firm against him because You, Jesus, are the Protector of my soul, who stands guard at all times. I am grateful for the warning signals often repeated throughout the Bible that teach me about Satan's strategy. Thank You for Your still, small voice regularly reminding me that I am a child of God purchased by Your life-giving blood. May everything that passes before my eyes and all activities I engage in reflect the light of Your redeeming love within me. It is through Your power that I resist the devil and stand firm in the faith. Amen.

I want to provide links to several helpful resources for any who may be battling the issues referred to in today's encouragement:
1) "Setting the Captives Free"
2) The same ministry that publishes the "Our Daily Bread" devotional booklets has a wonderful assortment of online resources, including several that deal with this subject.
3) Focus of the Family has a great online resource called "Troubled With" dealing with many issues.

Yesterday Mike, a friend who is also a teacher, brought over some students from the Christian school up the road. They have an interest in nature photography and Mike knows of my love for photography through the daily encouragement ministry. Below are a couple of their photos taken in our neighborhood. What a joy to challenge young people to have faith in the Creator.
