 Three Mile Island
Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (cooling towers)

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Sounding The Alarm"

"Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand" (Joel 2:1). "If the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?" (1 Corinthians 14:8).

Three Mile Island ten mile zoneWe live about ten miles from the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant. In 1979 this was the site of the worst nuclear accident in American history and the experience is still vividly remembered by those who lived here at the time (we lived in northern PA about 180 miles away).

Yesterday TMI tested their warning sirens, all 96 of them, that are within ten miles of the plant.
The first test at 12:15 was the old system and we stepped outside and heard it just fine. At 1:15 they tested the new and improved system but I didn't hear it at all. It may be that I had a quick phone call and was a bit late but I was disappointed. It is important to know what warnings sound like and of course how we are to properly respond. Each year we get a pamphlet with very detailed emergency information from Exelon, the power company that operates the plant, regarding how to respond if there is a plant emergency. It includes information about the alarm system and a map with emergency evacuation routes.

Today's first daily text is known by many due to a well-known song we feature in our song selections today*¹.
"Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm." Matthew Henry comments regarding this passage, "The priests were to alarm the people with the near approach of the Divine Judgments. It is the work of ministers to warn of the fatal consequences of sin, and to reveal the wrath from heaven against the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men."

These are types of warnings that many people would rather not hear preferring instead to hear the "feel good" but misleading message that everything is going to be fine. Yet the Bible and history teaches otherwise. God always judges sin according to His timetable (see Genesis 15:16, 2 Peter 3).

The second daily verse is addressing clarity in communication illustrating with the trumpet used for signaling in battle, "If the trumpet does not sound a clear call."  If a certain tune indicated an order that tune needed to be loud, clear, and precise. An uncertain sound would lead to confusion and possible disaster. Today we need true men of God to boldly tell the truth and we need godly discernment to distinguish between the Zedekiahs and Micaiahs of our time. (See 1 Kings 22 and Tuesday's message)

This message is on my heart due to the hastening of the downward spiral of rebellion against God and His ways. As the ancient boundary stones of historic Biblical morality are being abandoned, people are doing what is right in their own eyes or as man-made law dictates, more so than any other period in modern history.*²
The Palmist wrote concerning the demolition of the foundations in Psalm 11 "If the foundations are destroyed..."

Val-Co demolition work 6/27/13Yesterday morning I was visiting one of our companies and I encountered George and Louie, two men doing some demolition work in preparation for an office renovation. I joined them for a few minutes in removing a stone wall. George took the photo of me manning the sledge hammer and smashing the stone wall. I enjoy demolition work but we have to be very careful when we set out to demolish something regarding what the consequences will be. This is especially true in the spiritual realm.

There's a lot of societal demolition work taking place without any regard for the short or long-term consequences. A blindness has covered the eyes of many and indifference has hardened their hearts. A powerful phrase from Hosea comes to mind, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6).

I recently listened to an interesting interview with Os Guiness online. Commenting on our culture's slide into decadence he states, "The notion that ideas don't have consequences is utterly foolish and we are moving into a world where we are soon going to reap in a far greater scale some of the consequences of these maligned ideas."

Thank God for the remnant of those who defy the mindset of the world and fully embrace the heart, mind and soul of God's truths. I trust that you are among them today!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, the alarms have rung loud and clear since Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden of Eden. The battlelines were drawn between the hosts of heaven and hell early on. We thank You for the spiritual armor listed in Ephesians 6 that equips us for battle, both offense and defense, as the flaming arrows of the devil are hurled in our direction. We thank You for Jesus, the captain of the spiritual army who sounds the warning throughout Scripture and through messengers of the gospel. Keep our ears tuned, our minds alert, and our hearts softened. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

"The Blessing Of The Ancient Landmarks"

"Aliens and Strangers" Interview with Os Guiness (condensed)

In this interview with Marvin Olasky Os Guiness is quite candid concerning his view of our current cultural condition, "We’re in an Augustinian moment. Augustine had the privilege and task of living in a pivotal moment: After 800 years of Roman dominance, he lived through the siege of Carthage and the siege of Rome. After 800 years, a fall beyond belief. The world as they’d known it—gone. He laid down the vision of the church’s response that was the bridge that led through the Dark Ages and eventually to Christendom. We’ve had 500 years of Western dominance, now at its sunset. I’m reading now about people who lived at an age when the world they knew had gone. Daniel—after centuries in the Promised Land, living as the chosen people, Israelites are in a pagan empire with Jerusalem destroyed. Daniel serves God even in that pagan empire. We’ve got to engage with faithfulness at the very heart of power, still."

Video version of the entire interview  Video  (1 hour!)  A very insightful interview!

Note: As we prepared today's message I listened to "Focus On The Family" and very timely interview with Albert Mohler related to today's topic. Listen here. Here's a blog article by Mohler on the matter.

Matthew Henry continues in his note regarding today's passage: "The striking description which follows, shows what would attend the devastations of locusts, but may also describe the effects from the ravaging of the land by the Chaldeans. If the alarm of temporal judgments is given to offending nations, how much more should sinners be warned to seek deliverance from the wrath to come! Our business therefore on earth must especially be, to secure an interest in our Lord Jesus Christ; and we should seek to be weaned from objects which will soon be torn from all who now make idols of them. There must be outward expressions of sorrow and shame, fasting, weeping, and mourning; tears for trouble must be turned into tears for the sin that caused it. But rending the garments would be vain, except their hearts were rent by abasement and self-abhorrence; by sorrow for their sins, and separation from them. There is no question but that if we truly repent of our sins, God will forgive them; but whether he will remove affliction is not promised, yet the probability of it should encourage us to repent.

"The Blood That Will Never Lose Its Power"

"For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:19,20).

Bloodmobile

Blood donationYesterday Brooksyne and I both donated blood at one of our company bloodmobile drives. We have participated in these blood drives since our college days nearly forty years ago donating in a variety of settings. For a number of years our church in northern Pennsylvania hosted the Red Cross blood drives for that area.  But yesterday was the first time for both of us using a bloodmobile. It was a nice, comfortable set-up!

I still find it fascinating and somewhat inspiring to join others from all walks of life lying on the reclining chair and giving blood (though we recall the flat, skinny tables). We're willing to accept the "small pinch" and inconvenience knowing that our blood may very well help save another life.

When Ester was little we took her with us and explained to her what this all meant since she had benefitted many times from donors because of her multiple heart surgeries. We prayed for the people who would be receiving the blood and we talked about an infinitely greater blood donation when Jesus Christ made peace for us through His blood, shed on the cross.

Blood Of ChristThis blood donation involved God's only begotten Son and was certainly not a source of minor pain or inconvenience. He agonized in great pain and died a horrific death when he voluntarily gave His blood for us.

When we give our blood at best we will extend another's life for a few bleeps in the span of eternity. It has very limited power in regard to the extent it can help someone else. But the blood of Christ was instrumental in the reconciling of all things and the making of peace between man and God. This blood has unlimited power to save to the uttermost for "the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).

In order for my blood to do any good a recipient must accept it through a transfusion. It won't have any effect sitting in a warehouse. Now Christ's shed blood has already brought millions into reconciliation and peace with God who have by faith willingly accepted this provision.  Have you done so?

The blood that Jesus shed for me
Way back on Calvary,
The blood that gives me strength from day to day
It will never lose its power.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, it is only through the sacrificial blood of Your Son that my sins are forgiven.  My guilty stains are plunged into the bottom of the ocean to be remembered no more.  All the adjectives in one's vocabulary cannot adequately describe the depth of my gratitude for such a selfless act of love.  Your redeeming blood sacrifice frees us from the penalty of sin in this life and for all eternity.  Thank You, Jesus, for freely shedding Your blood on my behalf.  Amen.

John and Joan Wiseman
John Wiseman is a friend of ours who worked with bloodmobiles for a number of years. He told me in his area they had blood collection drives in churches on Sundays. I understand the collection period generally follows the service but John told me at times it's during the service and the pastor will ask the people to sit near the back until they are called out. I thought it was interesting that these drives are now held in conjunction with services and as a pastor I can sure think of some interesting thoughts I would use to encourage people to participate! John and his wife Joan are now retired and seeking ministry opportunities as the Lord opens doors for them.

He Giveth More Grace

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"He Giveth More Grace"

"But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD" (Genesis 6:8). "The Word … who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). "For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace" (John 1:16). "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9a).
"The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly" (1 Timothy 1:14). "But He gives us more grace" (James 4:6a). “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5).

He giveth more grace when the burden grows greater;
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase.
To added affliction He addeth His mercy;
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

When we lived in Massachusetts I (Brooksyne) met a retired missionary who shared an interesting story with the pastor's wives of Southern New England. Olive Hawkes served, alongside her husband, Howard, for many years as a missionary in East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh. They labored under extremely harsh conditions, faithfully serving the Lord and expressing His message of love and redemption to the people there. Bangladesh was, and is presently, an extremely impoverished country. Overwhelmingly Muslim, receptivity to the Gospel was and is to this day relatively minimal.

Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

Old Coleman stoveSupplies were low and money was scarce in December of 1950 when a package arrived from the states that included a new record album and a pound of coffee. The Hawkes had no electricity or running water. She anxiously heated water in a sauce pan on the portable Coleman stove for a makeshift coffee pot. After opening the album Olive loaded their Victrola to play a newer song that was very popular in the states at the time called, "He Giveth More Grace".

Hank crank record playerShe manually played the record by turning a crank on the victrola and began to listen to the words of the song. However in the providence of God the record had a scratch on it and skipped at the refrain in which the song says, "He giveth and giveth and giveth again". Every time she cranked it, the words would repeat "He giveth and giveth and giveth and giveth and giveth…." Olive knew deep in her heart that God wanted her to be reminded of this truth about our generous God over and over and over and over again. This experience filled her with great assurance and supplied deep abiding joy to her heart at a time when circumstances were bleak and uncertain.

His love has no limit; His grace has no measure;
His pow'r has no boundary known unto men.
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

Let's fast forward 63 years and I'll give you an update on Olive Hawkes so you can determine whether or not God has continued to give and give and give according to her need. We lost touch many years ago and considered that she might have died, but we found her contact info in a ministers directory and I put in a call yesterday.

Olive is now 93 years old and sharp as a whistle. I relayed to her the story she'd told the pastor's wives about twenty years ago and she quickly recalled the details. She proceeded to tell me the way God continues to give to her. Her husband, Howard, passed away eighteen years ago and for the past five years she has lived in the comforts of a retirement village in Agawam, MA. She meets with a weekly prayer group in which she is greatly encouraged and is involved in her church. Her four children in their 60's are all in ministry, and her daughter is a missionary  in India. She has eight grandchildren in ministry and enjoys the delights of her fifteen great grandchildren.

When I asked her for a summary statement of how God continues to work in her life Olive answered, "The Lord's faithfulness has not changed. The greater the need the greater the measure of His faithfulness." The special revelation of God's generosity experienced 63 years ago in an impoverished setting on the mission field as Olive hand cranked the Victrola has been a lasting testimony to God's faithfulness in every season of Olive's life. "He giveth and giveth and giveth......"

And it's a message for each of us as well. The greater the need the greater the supply of God's grace.

God has been dispensing grace to the fallen human race at least since he sought out a hiding Adam and Eve and asked, "Where are you?" The first reference to the word "grace" in the Bible is in Genesis 6:8, "Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." From the very beginning God has been pouring out His grace and He continues to abundantly do so.

The nature of God is that He is always "full of grace." Since He is immutable this fullness is constant. His fullness of grace is never depleted and never needs replenished. Although grace has been poured out abundantly from the very beginning, God is always "full of grace." There is no less grace available for our need than there was for Noah or Paul or anyone else who has ever lived.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father's full giving is only begun.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, You know how often I ask You for blessings and yet I can't know the extent of Your limitless grace if I don't experience the lack from my human provisions. I can't personally know Your divine strength unless I endure human weakness. In the midst of multiple heartaches and distress You multiply Your peace and provision for my life. Help me not to resent affliction, hardship or weakness since it is in those experiences that I more clearly recognize Your immeasurable grace for all that concerns me. It is in the name of Jesus that I come to You in prayer thanking You for Your unlimited provision and immeasurable grace. Amen.

Stephen's note: I was curious as to if there was any other online mention of the Hawkes and came across an old sermon that mentioned them in an illustration. This must have taken place many, many years ago. (East Pakistan is now known as Bangladesh).

"How well do I remember the year I stopped by at the airport on my way back to college. I was driving a VW bug with all my possessions packed in a trunk tied on the roof, and when I reached Hartford Connecticut, instead of turning south on the Burlington Turnpike, I went north a few miles to Bradley Field. A small group of prayer supporters were on hand to bid farewell to Howard and Olive Hawkes who were once again on their way back to the mission field they loved, East Pakistan. Their oldest daughter Lois was being left behind in college, their autistic son Howard would remain at home for the first time, and with them was their 16 year old daughter Joy*. As I got back on the highway and made my way toward the next step in my own preparation for ministry, I was moved to tears as I reviewed that scene over and over in my mind's eye. What for me was a heart wrenching moment, for Howard and Olive was a glorious moment - with broad smiles on their faces they climbed the ramp to the plane. How could they do that? Because they knew they were being sent. They were missionaries."

*Olive told Brooksyne that Joy who was born in India continues to serve the Lord as a missionary there. Her husband who served alongside her died last year in his adopted homeland.

"A Little Foolishness" - Humor/satire blog (a great outlet for non-serious writing but at times with a subtle message!) (Note: This material is satire!)
"Clear Minded" - Longer, periodic articles on specific issues impacting the faithful believer and church. (Actually this is my intent but I haven't done much with it!)
"Hymns of Hope" - Brooksyne along with two friends made a CD using classic hymns. Brooksyne tells the background story of the 11 hymns. All of these songs are also available for download on the site.

Personal Mission Statement
"I am created by God to bring Him glory. Through God's Son Jesus Christ I have been redeemed and I make it my life's goal to please the Lord. My mission in life is to honor God through my faith and obedience and to prepare myself and all whom I may influence for eternity."
