Caleb, one of the twelve who spied out the land of Canaan, stood before the Israelites and with bold confidence declared, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it" (Numbers 13:30). Caleb's faith in God was energized by the great challenge that lay ahead as they set out to defeat the Nephilim who were giants. He was a valiant young man of 40 years when he gave this daring challenge to the Israelites. Did his faith and vigor weaken over the years? I'm glad Scripture gives us a glimpse of Caleb 45 years later in his senior years when he said these words, "So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then!" This Scripture doesn't show Caleb sitting in a rocking chair mulling over the unproductive thought, "If only I were young again." In fact he's charged up ready to follow the Lord's leading even at 85 years of age. I memorized the daily verse, "Never be lacking in zeal…" many years ago in my early twenties. Although I'm now in my early fifties I want to mirror Caleb's attitude as he kept his spiritual fervor into his eighties. I shared today's message this last Sunday with our congregation and encouraged them to memorize Romans 12:11 as a prompt. I told them, "Whether I'm 20, 52, or should the Lord tarry until I'm 85, I want the same zeal and fervor to be present." Following the service a young man named Tony walked up and showed me what he had written during the sermon. In the front of his Bible it said, "Invite Steve Weber back in 33 years." I was impressed not only that he listened carefully to the message but his math was "right on" as well. We had a good chuckle, but who knows, I just might get an invitation to return at 85 years of age and those still in the church will see if I've truly kept my spiritual fervor serving the Lord. "Never be lacking in zeal." The word translated "zeal" is one of my favorite Greek words. "Spoude", which is an ancient relative to our English word "speed", connoting diligence and earnestness. My, how I want that to be true in my life and ministry! Paul knew how the cares of this life could overshadow our zeal causing our enthusiasm to diminish, although Scripture shows no evidence of any such lacking of zeal in his own life! "Keep your spiritual fervor." The word "fervor" literally means "to be hot, boil or glow." The Amplified Version translates this phrase "be aglow in the Spirit." One dynamic I've noticed in my own life and ministry is that keeping a spiritual fire going takes diligence on my part. Paul warned against quenching the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19). "Serving the Lord." Are you serving the Lord? We have such a tendency to compartmentalize our service, which actually limits it. Are you serving the Lord right now? You should be, wherever you are and whatever you're doing. Paul teaches "It is the Lord Christ you are serving" (Colossians 3:24b) and to "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men" (Ephesians 6:7). Perhaps you can take just a moment right now and earnestly pray, "Lord Jesus, help me to keep my zeal and spiritual fervor today as I serve You in whatever I do!" Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Brooksyne's Note: It's good to be home again with my family and in my familiar spot next to Stephen as he prepares the message for Daily Encouragement. Thank you for the emails, cards, calls and most especially your prayers during our time of grief. For those unaware my sister, Margie Satterfield, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 25. She was 57 years old. I was in Muskogee, OK for the past four days with her family and with my siblings. It was a very special time and I will share more at a future date. Again, I thank you for your kindnesses extended toward me over the past several days. Here's a great song that we have never heard before (at least that we recall) It's called "Light The Fire" |

"A Trap"

Previous Message · Listen to these messages · Easy read/print Tuesday, January 30, 2007 "A Trap" "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction" (1 Timothy 6:9). I have often stated how I have received inspiration from church signs. Yesterday I drove by a church in rural York County and saw this one, "He who buries his talent is making a grave mistake." Periodically I have seen signs that really don't edify me. But the all time worst church sign I've ever seen was a church that had bingo (inexcusable for a true church of Jesus Christ in my view). The name of the church was Holy Ghost _________ Church (I won't identify the denomination). The large marquee sign along US Route 219 in New York advertised bingo night with this phrase, "Holy Ghost Bingo". What a shameful witness for the third person in the divine, holy Trinity! It's sad when churches and the state get into gambling. Here in Pennsylvania the state-sponsored gambling scheme is aggressively marketed. One can hardly go into any store without being bombarded with lottery sales. Advertising abounds on TV, print and on billboards. One perverse ad (I can't recall whether it was Pennsylvania or another state) actually markets the lottery to the poor as "the way out." Our current leadership is bent on expanding other forms of gambling in our state as well, telling us it will lower taxes. Sure, want to make a bet on that? I marvel again at the timeless relevance of God's Word. In 1 Timothy 6 Paul has warnings to both the rich (17-19) and those who desire to be rich (6-10). We surely benefit from the warnings that Paul gives to the rich. You may say, "well, that's sure not me!" Yes, it probably really is. Most of us have far more of this world's goods than the vast majority of the world's people. Yet we also still need the solemn warning in our daily text that Paul gives to "people who want to get rich." You see, it seems no matter how much you have, you always want more! Let's just consider one word in our Scripture text today. The word "trap" has the root meaning "fastened by a noose". Wow, isn't that the case? A noose is loose at first but gets tighter and tighter. Isn't that the nature of sin in general and covetousness in particular? There's an appeal, such as the bait set in a trap, but going down that road indeed leads to ruin and destruction. Let us heed the Scripture's warning today! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Personal note: Today's email post is sent out much earlier than usual. Brooksyne is returning from Tulsa this morning and I will be picking her up in the Allentown area. Prior to that I will have breakfast with my brother, who lives in that area. The song that comes to mind today that we do well to inform us is simply titled, "Enough". Many of you have heard it and perhaps sung it in church. |

"Careless Words"
RSS feed xml Podcast feed A daily, Bible-based perspective of hope, encouragement and exhortation. Previous Message · Listen to these messages · Easy read/print Monday, January 29, 2007 "Careless Words" "But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken" (Matthew 12:36). We had a humorous experience many years ago when we pastored in New England. One Sunday morning our choir was rehearsing for a song with one of the members using a cordless microphone. Suddenly we heard a very uplifting voice loudly through the sound system, "Now you have a good day." In a few minutes Gene Wilmoth, who has since gone on to be with the Lord, arrived. He was one of our older members and a vibrant greeter. Upon inquiry he turned out to be the "culprit". He had been on his CB, which apparently had the same frequency as the cordless microphone. Gene actually used the CB to share his faith and had a circle of like-minded friends who sought to share Christ over the CB. He used the verbal word to uplift and bear testimony for Christ. Consider our daily verse. Jesus points out that every word we say comes under the scrutiny of divine judgment. We will all give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word we have spoken. Talk about massive data banks! Over 6 billion people live on the planet at the present time, let alone all who have lived throughout history. Now someone has determined that men speak 7,000 words a day and women 20,000, although I have no idea how that come up with figures like this! Assuming it's true across all languages that's some 84 trillion words spoken daily. Consider just the careless words (the Greek conveys "useless") coming out of a typical individual. What about the words coming out of Washington or Hollywood alone!!! Today let's determine by God's grace to use our words to glorify God and build others up. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Personal note: Brooksyne is in Oklahoma today to attend the funeral for her older sister who passed away last Thursday evening. She wants to thank all of you who sent notes of condolence. Some readers may recall a song from many years ago called, "I'm an Okie from Muskogee" and that's just where she is today for the funeral, although she grew up in the Tulsa area. Yesterday she and her younger brother visited relatives in the mountains of northwest Arkansas. She will be returning from Oklahoma early tomorrow morning. We sang a song in church yesterday that really blessed me. Here's an online version, "We All Bow Down" * Some readers might not know what a CB is. It's similar to a walkie talkie. My father-in-law, who is now with the Lord, drove an 18-wheeler and with his southern drawl was the quintessential CB'er. This morning I spoke to my chaplain friend at Transport for Christ and he tells me that truckers still use them although most also have cell phones and many have satellite for internet access. Many also have the XM satellite radio. |

"Proclaiming Truth"
RSS feed xml Podcast feed A daily, Bible-based perspective of hope, encouragement and exhortation. Previous Message · Listen to these messages · Easy read/print Friday, January 26, 2007 "Proclaiming Truth" "I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right" (Isaiah 45:19). When I pastored in Massachusetts we had a large changeable message sign on the busy highway (US 44) in front of our church. For many years Bill and Veda, a dedicated senior couple, faithfully changed the message each week to provide a sentence sermon for drivers and pedestrians passing by. We normally used a Scripture portion or short spiritual saying as a witness for the Lord. One week we used a saying simply stating, "Abortion Stops A Beating Heart." A day or two later I received a call from a lady identifying herself as a neighbor who was very upset about the message. She didn't feel that she and her children needed to be exposed to this "hate speech" and told me how much better the world would be if there weren't people like me.* She ended the call by saying, "I wish someone would stop your heart from beating" and hung up. Wow, that was sure a loving statement! Now the statement "Abortion Stops A Beating Heart" is incontrovertibly true. The tiny baby's heart is indeed beating by the time the vast majority of elective abortions are performed. In fact the heart is beating three weeks after conception. The angry caller typifies the world's response to truth. In our postmodern world the vast majority of learning institutions are proponents of making truth relative rather than absolute. But the ultimate giver of truth is Jesus and the world tried to silence Him. The church is to be the "the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15). The world also wants to silence the true church yet we must unapologetically, unashamedly, and unfearfully speak out the truth even if it's not popular. We must do it even though we will be increasingly hated and ridiculed for taking such a stand. God has revealed Himself so powerfully in the daily Scripture portion: "I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right" (Isaiah 45:19). Indeed He does and so must we! Be encouraged today, Stephen C. Weber Daily Prayer: Father, You established the very essence of what truth is, by its definition as well as its character quality. Truth is not subject to our moods, circumstances or desires, but it is absolutely established by Your Holy Scriptures. Though deception is a way of life for many people help us to be people of truth. Help us to restrain from telling half-truths, twisting facts in our favor, or practicing any form of deception. We desire to be people of truth who are not harsh or proud. We want to be Your representives, Father, who are humble and obedient as we speak the truth in love. Amen. Note from Brooksyne: My oldest sister, Margie, passed away last evening. I enlist your prayers on behalf of my family during our time of bereavement. She was 57 years old and experienced poor health for many years. She had colon surgery Dec. 26 and was recovering at home when she went into cardiac arrest on January 11. The attempt to revive her left her in a comatose state for the past two weeks. It has been an extremely difficult time for her husband and her two sons who remain. I will be going to Tulsa, OK to be with the family tomorrow. We thank you for your thoughtful prayers at this time. Several members of my family need Jesus in their lives and I pray that this will be a time of spiritual harvest. Margie is with the Lord now – she was a believer. * One day the true church will be removed and the world will indeed have the opportunity to see how much "better" things will be! Another interesting recollection of the conversation with the neighbor mentioned in today's message was that she begrudgingly acknowledged, due to free speech, our church's right to expression. But it was almost as if in her mind such an expression should be out of the bounds of free speech. We enjoyed our 7½ years of pastoral service in Massachusetts and many readers in this series are from that portion of the country. May God bless and strengthen you as you stand for the Lord in a region increasingly hostile to the Christian faith. Of course this hostility is spreading and we here in the Bible belt of the Northeast (south-central Pennsylvania) also experience it, but having lived in both regions there is still a major difference. I just read of a site directed to young people that encourages blasphemy and mocking God. Here's information about this and a site that provides an opportunity to counter with a testimony. I also recommend this site this is on as a source of perspective. Today's song is one of my favorites by "Casting Crowns." Many of you have heard it. Here's a rather low audio quality online version. "The Voice of Truth" (audio) "But the voice of truth tells me a different story. The voice of truth says 'do not be afraid'. And the voice of truth says 'This is for my glory'. Out of all the voices calling out to me. I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth." "What We Live For"
RSS feed xml Podcast feed A daily, Bible-based perspective of hope, encouragement and exhortation. Previous Message · Listen to these messages · Easy read/print "What We Live For" "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). Martin, a long-time "pew neighbor" of ours, went home to be with the Lord this last weekend. Martin and Arlene, his wife of 65 years, sat right behind us in church on Sundays prior to our ministry as interim pastor. In the customary greeting we often turned around, met their smiling faces, and shook hands with them. I distinctly recall the firm grip from his working man hands. He was a lifelong farmer, working the rich soil here in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. He had an earnest faith in God and, years earlier, served his church as a deacon for over 30 years. In the weeks leading up to his death Martin knew his departure was near. Along with many other caring believers, Brooksyne and I prayed for him and his family during this difficult period and were greatly blessed as we'd hear reports of how his faith was soaring. Though Martin's body was growing more fragile, his spirit was growing stronger. His family often saw his arms upraised in anticipation of his departure. He was inching closer and closer toward heaven spiritually and physically, as others would come into his home and sing hymns of the faith in his final days. His funeral celebration yesterday was a rich reminder of what we live for. Our pastor did an outstanding job of not only sharing words of comfort to the family but instilling a great sense of anticipation of heaven for all. He used a powerful illustration. Picture the scene of loved ones boarding a ship that is sailing across the seas to a faraway land. Due to the great love in their hearts for their departing loved ones they stand on the seashore for however long it takes to see the ship cross the horizon as it finally fades from view. The family left on shore, in final resignation, say to one another, "There they go." But far away on another distant shore are more loved ones anxiously awaiting the arrival of the same ship. As they see the ship approaching in the distance they exclaim, "Look! Here they come!" This is an analogy of what it is like as a believer to reluctantly bid farewell to our loved ones on earth and consider that there will be other loved ones anxiously awaiting their arrival in heaven! The apostle Paul's perspective on life and death is so liberating. After his conversion on the Damascus road he began experiencing the great joy that comes in living for Christ. He declared "to live is Christ." It wasn't by any means an easy life but millions since have testified to the joy of serving the living Christ. Indeed "life is worth the living just because He lives." Yet Paul realized "to die is gain." The word translated "gain" has the sense of advantage. In fact a few verses later Paul says, "I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far" (Phil. 1:23). Several years later Paul is writing his final letter to Timothy and he was aware that "the time has come for my departure." What solid resignation I see in these words as he faced the martyr's death, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7). Today, what a joy it is to follow Christ and to have a deep, abiding assurance of His love. And when the time comes for our departure we "gain" and are better by far. That's what we live for! Praise the Lord, today I am a child of the King and so are all of you who have placed your faith in Jesus Christ! Be encouraged today, Stephen C. Weber Daily prayer: Father, as I live out my time here on this earth, I'm so glad that I belong to You. You hold my right hand and guide me with Your counsel which is leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but You and I desire You more than anything on earth. My health may fail and my spirit may even grow weak, but Father, You remain the strength of my heart and You are my portion forever. You are my Refuge, my Fortress and my Deliverer and I will joyfully tell those who will listen of Your mighty works. Amen. (Prayer inspired by Psalm 73:23ff) One of the interesting features at many funerals is a display of photos and other memories of the deceased. We only knew the Spicklers when they were in their 80's. Here's their wedding photo 65 years ago. It was a blessing to see their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren filling up the front of one side of the church. There is no greater legacy to leave than a godly heritage! Here's a song I consider when I recognize Martin's life and the aspiration we should all have to live a good life. Today's suggested music resource is an uplifting song we used at my Mom's homegoing celebration. It shares from the perspective of one who has gone to heaven and is speaking to us on earth.
