I took the photo west as a cold front was moving in. Today it's frigid outside! Listen to this message on your audio player. "Feet That Bring Good News" "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" (Isaiah 52:7). I have a couple of old pairs of wingtip dress shoes Brooksyne bought for me at our local thrift store. They look great and are two brands I don't normally buy (Florsheim and Bostonian).  However each pair has a hole in the sole! A friend of mine at church knows a man who can repair them by replacing the soles and volunteered to take them to him. I took the shoes to our midweek Bible Study and placed them on the platform as a demonstration and asked if they might remind anyone of a particular Bible verse. Sure enough an astute Bible student, a retired minister, quoted the daily verse! About ten years ago there was an interesting TV commercial that ran during the World Series.  While the song, "You are so beautiful to me" played in the background there were scenes of different athletes demonstrating the injuries they sustained common to their sport.  It began with the cauliflower ear of a wrestler and other sport's injuries. It was a clever advertisement for Nike athletic shoes. One brief scene in the commercial shows the gnarled and calloused feet of a runner. This brings to mind the daily Scripture verse.  The Bible says that the feet of those who bring good news are beautiful!  Now I normally don't consider the feet a beautiful part of the anatomy, but God's Word says they are! But what does the Lord see as beauty in our feet? I certainly don't believe it's primarily related to physical features as we reckon beauty.  I believe God is extolling those who are sent to "bring good news, proclaim peace, bring good tidings, proclaim salvation." The three word summary of their message is "Your God reigns!"  This verse refers first to those who proclaimed release to the captives. There's little doubt that many held captive by godless authority over a period of years had lost sight of the God of Israel. But this passage also foreshadows the announcement of salvation through the coming Messiah and the future work of the Church. The apostle Paul wrote, "How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Romans 10:14,15). Today God's messengers will climb the rugged mountain terrains, cross the hot dry desserts, and stand on the street corners of crowded cities to proclaim the message of God's salvation to a troubled world. They are working all throughout beleagured Haiti.  One of my surgeons, Dr. William Peipgrass, is now in Haiti with a mission medical team. Not only will they use their feet to travel to difficult places, but they'll use their hands to bandage the wounded, and their voices to speak the truth in love. I believe God sees beauty in our surrendered devotion and sacrificial service as we fully dedicate our lives to Him. Some feet are doubtlessly calloused, some are arthritic and still others may be laden with painful bunions.  But feet that have been active in "bringing good news, proclaiming peace, bringing good tidings, and proclaiming salvation" are beautiful in the eyes of God. Today all over the world God is calling His children to continue to bring the Good News to a world besieged with bad news. Some 2,700 years after Isaiah first heard this Word from the Lord our victorious message has not changed.  From the rooftops we proclaim, "Our God Reigns!" I encourage all readers to dedicate their feet to His glorious service! "Character Matters" "For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example" (2 Thessalonians 3:7a). "Don't do as I do.  Do as I say!"  Something seems out of kilter with that expression doesn't it!  And yet many leaders at home, in the workplace, and in the government live by that code, whether or not they actually say it. We are becoming increasingly accustomed to poor examples, so much so, that in the last several years there has been debate as to whether character even matters.  Fame, talent, good looks, or educational degrees can trump over one's character when push comes to shove. One's flawed character is downplayed in favor of the ratings he or she can get and the money they generate just by their visibility. Perhaps you've heard the term "dumbing down", usually referring to education.  Well, I feel this applies to morality as well.  There are young people that are completely unaware of historic and Biblical morality concerning sexuality.  The lack of sound teaching and positive example accompanied by the abundance of immoral trash, especially in the entertainment field and computer age, has very effectively "dumbed down" their sensitivity and awareness of right and wrong. "God gives each person strengths and abilities that will find their greatest usefulness only under His control.  Outside that control, however, they don't accomplish what they could and often become tools for evil.  One way to make sure this does not happen is to tell God of your willingness to be under His control.  With His presence in your life, your natural strengths and abilities will be used to their greatest potential and for the greatest good" (Life Application Bible). Couple our abilities with godly character and we will accomplish much good for the kingdom of God. Paul, along with Silas and Timothy, had ministered personally to the believers in Thessalonica, having founded the church.  They spent a relatively short time there, perhaps several months, before persecution drove them out (see Acts 17:1-10).  Several months later he wrote a letter to them (1 Thessalonians).  But during that short time of personal interface the Thessalonians had witnessed godly character in Paul and his ministry associates. Like Paul, powerful leaders accompanied by good character can properly declare, "Follow our example."  In another text Paul elaborates on this with the essential necessity of consistent Christ-like character; "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1). Today, we must resist the false contention of this world.  Character does matter!  Let this be our goal. "Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us" (1 Peter 2:12). Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Our Father and God, help us to live our life in a way that does not gratify our flesh, but rather feeds our spirit that is redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.  You have given us opportunity to make a positive difference in this degenerate world.  May we, by word and example, bring light into this darkened, sin-indulged world.  May the fruit of the spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, be evident in our lives so that these attitudes bring about good deeds which glorify You, Father.  Others will look at our lives and see beyond our human frailties to recognize the Spirit of God that is at work in us.  We pray this in Jesus' name.  Amen. "Trying To Stay Faithful" "And though the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention" (Jeremiah 25:4). "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it" (Hebrews 2:1). Yesterday I called a businessman friend of mine. Like so many he's had some major setbacks in this economy and is presently looking for work.  I've known him since shortly after moving to the Lancaster area in 2001. He has had several jobs over the past ten years but each company has downsized or eliminated his position.  I was calling him about another matter but sensed some discouragement and brokeness in his voice. I asked him, not in a superficial way but in earnest, "How are you doing?" I appreciated his honest reply, "Trying to stay faithful."  I had prayer with him over the phone and sought to encourage him. I believe he was heartened, since our burdens are easier to bear when we know others are praying. His experience and some of you reading this is expressed in an old hymn: Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Our first Scripture verse today describes the period just prior to God's judgment of His people at the time of Jeremiah.  The message of truth had persistently been delivered "again and again" but they did not listen or pay any attention. Paying attention is a practiced discipline of the mind.  There are so many distractions in life. In our electronic age there's more than ever. Electronic gadgets continue to appear that should make us more efficient with our time, but in reality they clutter our schedules and distract us even more than the pre-computer age.  I came across this illustrative photo several years ago in a minister's magazine. Thankfully in my preaching I have never encountered inattentiveness as extreme as this but it does illustrate the many distractive elements in modern life.  But I do think we'd all agree that congregational members do take "commercial breaks" in their mind during the pastor's sermon! The Holy Spirit inspired writer of Hebrews states, concerning spiritual things, "We must pay much closer attention."  There's a tendency to pay less and less attention to that which we are already familiar with as we grow older. But giving our undivided attention to spiritual truth really needs to increase throughout life if we are to be mature believers. When we first moved down to Lancaster County we sat directly behind an elderly couple in church. Al and Thata Book were veteran servants of Christ having served in missions and various other roles of ministry including Bishop. They are both with the Lord now but I recall their very purposeful attentiveness and joyful receptivity as they would listen to the Word being preached. Brooksyne and I looked forward to sitting in their "shadow" so to speak, since their earnest response to God's Word, though well seasoned in their knowledge and teaching of Scripture, was contagious. In contrast there are those who subscribe to the attitude, "I already know that" as they grow older.  Such glum or haughty attitudes shut out the refreshing working of the Holy Spirit in one's life.  The focus of our attention is to be on "what we have heard."  Of course in context this refers to spiritual truths. The Amplified Bible states, "the truths that we have heard."  Prior to the printing press and certainly at the time of the New Testament having one's own personal Bible was not possible. But they gathered and heard the Word. Today, most all of our readers can do both; gather with other believers to hear the Word expounded and also individually study the Scriptures in our devotional and prayer closet. We must give unswerving attention to holding onto truth "so that we do not drift away from it."  Now I do not feel my friend was expressing this kind of desperation in the sense he was drifting away, but was merely sharing from his heart the discouragement at persistent closed doors. A rather obscure verse in the Old Testament describes the people's response to God's Word during a time of revival as "Ezra read the Book of the Law aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law" (Nehemiah 8:3). A mark of genuine revival is giving proper respect and attentiveness to God's Word! God has called and equipped us to be overcomers in all areas of life including inattentiveness.  Depending on the particular circumstance some have more overcoming than others but God is able and willing to meet us in our place of need.  Today let us heed the clear warning of the Scripture and let us "pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it"" Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily Prayer: Father, Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.  Without it we would walk in darkness and be led astray.  We want to give attention to Your Word, respect its message, and follow its instruction so that we will not drift from the truth.  In the name of Jesus, we pray.  Amen. Brooksyne's Study Note:  I was further moved by the response of the people as Ezra opened the book and read to them: "The people all stood up.  Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, 'Amen! Amen!' Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground." Perhaps this is the passage that prompts some churches to stand during the reading of Scripture.  But I especially note the people's physical and verbal response – by lifting their hands and responding together, "Amen!  Amen!" followed by bowing down in reverence and worship to God.  Most all of our readers have had access to God's Word all our lives, can read it anytime we want, and yet we often neglect to do so.  I think of those in closed countries who don't have access to Scripture and how they are so eager to hear the Word.  I pray that in my heart I would heed the Scriptures more and be genuinely mindful of the privilege we have of possessing our own Bibles for inspiration and instruction.
