"My Friendship Collection"

"At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged" (Acts 28:15).

I collect eagles, not real ones but figurines. I have eagles made of wood, crystal, glass, ceramic, metal and composite materials as well as pictures of eagles and eagle calendars. Apart from being one of my favorite winged creatures they remind me of a number of Scriptures that allude to the eagle.

I also "collect" friends. The most long standing friend I have is Dave Simpson whom I met in first grade. We will visit with him and his wife Sandy in a couple of weeks out in Springfield, Missouri. I just received an encouraging note from Mike Matangelo, a friend for nearly 30 years, who now lives in North Carolina. I have friends I've collected from all over the world. In fact there's quite a few on this mailing list and interestingly some I have never met face to face but I interface with regularly via the internet.

Bill Hoke is a relatively new friend. I met him in 2001 shortly after moving to Pennsylvania from New England. But just the last couple of days he demonstrated two characteristics of what we all desire in friends.

I had a tough day Wednesday. A sump pump malfunctioned and we had a minor flood in our basement and this isn't the first time this has happened. I scrambled to clean up the water and devised another way of getting the water out of our house to a drain field, which involved drilling holes through 11 inches of wall including masonry. Galen, another friend, lent me a powerful drill and long masonry bits for this project.

I missed an afternoon meeting I'd planned to attend and that evening Bill called to say he and some other friends had missed me at the meeting and wanted to see if I was OK. It's nice to be missed isn't it!

Yesterday morning I called Bill to ask him a question. The phone rung a long time so I nearly hung up. Finally he answered and after my greeting he excitedly told me, "At the very moment you called I was having my quiet time and was praying for you and Brooksyne. I was asking God to open more doors in regard to your corporate chaplain ministry." That was sure encouraging! Bill has himself hit some turbulence in life and yet he remains interested in others and continues to be an encourager.

I am thankful for each of my friends and greatly value my friendship collection. In the classic movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" I'm always touched at the end when George Bailey receives the note from Clarence that states "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends."

The daily verse, although rather obscure, has meant a great deal to me for many years. One day I was reading and this phrase just sort of jumped out at me as it is pictorially describes the warm setting. The long journey to Rome for Paul was wearying and now as he finally approached the great city some friends had made the effort to come out to greet him. I smile as I picture the scene since I've had similar experiences and fondly remember them. "At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged."

"At the sight of these men..." I know people like that. Even at a distance the sight of them is a source of joy and encouragement to Paul. It might not be their physical presence but a phone call or an email message. Some people are "energy givers"; others are "energy drainers". Everyone brightens a room, either when they enter or when they exit. I sure want to be an energy giver and brighten rooms by my presence rather than my absence.

"Paul thanked God and was encouraged." God received thanksgiving due to this friendship. Surely God was pleased. The Amplified Bible states that Paul "thanked God and received new courage." I know people who do that for me. Ecclesiastes 4:10 states "If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!"

Today I ask you, "How's your friendship collection?" Who can you encourage? Who can you greet or contact who needs a spiritual uplift? What friend needs a call? Here's two great phrases; "I miss seeing you" and "I'm praying for you." May the Lord give all of us a growing friendship collection!

Daily prayer: Father, I thank You for the friends who've come alongside me in my walk of faith. They rejoice with me in times of celebration and accomplishment. They express deep concern during my times of loss and heartache. Their caring actions confirm their sincere interest as they seek to physically meet my needs. Help me to be the kind of friend to others that I seek for myself. Above all, I am grateful for the divine friendship I have with You and the fellowship that I enjoy day and night. Amen.

Identity theft!

"The Original Identity Thief"

"Satan disguises himself as an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14).

When I pastored a church on an interim basis earlier this year in the Harrisburg PA area we had a colorful senior nick-named "Red". One Saturday morning several of the men went out for breakfast including Red and we had the above photo taken. Of course it didn't really look like this as I had some fun with the photo by making everyone look like Red! Can you tell which one in the photo is the "real" Red? Can you identify Stephen in the same photo?

We recently heard from a reader who had her identity stolen and the fallout she has dealt with since that time. Identity theft has soared to the top of the modern crimes list. In my view one of the funniest ads now running on TV is a credit card claiming to provide protection from identity theft. The ads show the person whose identity was stolen speaking in the voice of the thief declaring how they have used the stolen money. It's a humorous ad but the experience of having your identity stolen is not humorous at all.

Identity theft is a growing form of crime that primarily involves stealing vital information about another person and using that information to get credit cards. But at times this information is also used by criminals in the commission of other crimes, so that the evidence trail leads back to the person whose identity had been stolen. And now there's also medical identity theft!

Being a victim of identity theft is a very grievous experience. It's not only time–consuming and expensive to resolve, but emotionally difficult as you seek to verify that you really are who you know you really are! It can damage a good reputation. Sin continues to abound in this fallen world, taking on new forms and depths of depravity. New technology is often at the forefront of facilitating ever newer forms of temptation and sin.

There's a stolen identity that we, as Christ's followers, need to be on constant guard against. Today's Scripture forthrightly states, "Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." Satan is the original Identity Thief. He seeks to steal the identity of an angel of light and then present himself as good. The word translated "disguise" is very interesting. Other translations use the words "transform" or "masquerade" to translate the Greek word "metascheÌ„matizoÌ„", which means "to change in fashion or appearance."

From the very beginning Satan has used identity theft and disguise as a means of deception, as in the garden he disguised himself as a serpent. Jesus, in His most lengthy teaching on Satan said, "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44).

A great line in the hymn "A Mighty Fortress" expresses it this way:

But still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe,
His craft and power are great and armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal.

Thank God for the balance of the great old hymn which reminds us of God's provision to overcome our enemy, the original identity thief, through the infinitely greater power of Jesus Christ. Today I encourage you to turn fully to Christ and be ever vigilant against our deceptive enemy.

Daily prayer: Father, we look to You and depend on Your Word to teach us spiritual discernment so that we can readily identify Satan when he regularly appears in disguise. Thank You for Your indwelling Holy Spirit that bears witness with ours when we must test the spirits to see that which is from You and that which is from the enemy. When we're uncertain surround us with godly counsel and reveal to us Your truths as we prayerfully look to You for daily guidance. Amen.

"Whatever Happens"

"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you" (Philippians 1:27,28).

Once again I awaken to another beautiful day and as I prepare today's message I expect this to be a typical day for me and my family with continued peace in our specific area of the world. I really do not have a worry concerning being persecuted for my faith on this day as many do. On my heart however is a report of current crucifixions of Christians taking place in the Middle East. The report indicates, not at all surprisingly, that this persecution is at the hands of Muslim militants and directed primarily to those who have converted to Christianity.

Bill Bright wrote prior to his death, "The most important moment in anyone's life as a believer is the last breath because the next breath is in heaven. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. A Christian can't lose, if we live, we go on serving Him. That's an adventure. If we die, we're in heaven with Him, and that's incredible."

I memorized the first part of the daily Scripture portion many years ago. Paul directs us to resolve in our hearts that we will stay faithful to Christ. "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ."

Today I am especially drawn to the phrase "Whatever happens..." I have always considered the "whatever" to mean whatever happens to me (Stephen Weber or any reader of the passage.) That is, whether I am having a good day or a bad day, whether things are going well or I'm going down a rough road; whatever happens to me I am to conduct myself in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Now that is certainly a valid outlook in life and I will continue to see the passage this way, yet I am not sure that's exactly what the Apostle Paul meant when he initially wrote these words. As I carefully study the context, both the verses before and after, I consider another sense or meaning.

Just prior to this verse Paul had written concerning his own realization that would either continue to live for Christ or he might die for Him (martyrdom). Here's that passage.

When Paul originally wrote this passage, I believe he was instructing his fellow believers, that "Whatever happens to me (Paul) you are to conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ."

He goes on to write, "Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence..." Now what really intrigues me is that Paul had every intention of going to see the Philippian believers if it was God's will that he remain alive.

However it was also his firm expectation that should this not be the case, I will "hear about you in my absence." The "absence" in this context would be his departure to be with the Lord (his death). This is similar to his statement in 2 Corinthians 5:8, "We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord."

He is confident that if that were the case (his being with the Lord) he would still hear the good report that the Philippians were "standing firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you."

Our service for the Lord Jesus Christ has eternal consequences. When we, in our divinely appointed time, are absent from the body and at home with the Lord, like Paul, we will still hear the good report concerning the ongoing results of our ministry! Let us stay faithful to our call whatever happens!

Daily Prayer: Father, we praise You and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy and most especially the freedom to worship You. But we know that there are many regions in our world where Christians are persecuted and suffer martyrdom at the hands of those who are enemies of the cross. We lift them up to You in prayer and ask that You will give them supernatural strength and resolute resolve to stand up for You in the face of evil surroundings. Though wicked men may destroy the flesh, they cannot rob the soul of inner peace and the uncompromising determination to "stand firm unto the end." Sustain those who have endured the painful loss of loved ones as well as those whose family members are being held captive and are presently enduring persecution. May You be glorified in the midst of these horribly adverse circumstances and may souls be saved.

Here's the report concerning persecution of our fellow brothers and sisters in the Middle East. Of course I can't verify the accuracy of this particular story but there is no question that believers in Christ all through the Middle East are suffering for their faith.

In response to requests concerning freezing corn (based upon the photo yesterday): Drop shucked ears of corn in boiling water. Submerge for 5 minutes. Remove ears of corn and submerge in ice water for 5 minutes. (This is called blanching.) Cut the corn off the cob and package for freezing. Enjoy fresh tasting corn all through the year! "Draw Me Close To You"

"Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. He did right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David and did not turn aside to the right or to the left. For in the eighth year of his reign while he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his father David" (2 Chronicles 34:3).

Yesterday I shared about our friends, Ken and Nila, and their new baby son, David Lee. When we went to the hospital to visit them Saturday evening we also saw our pastor, Bob Verno, who was visiting as well. Bob had an opportunity to hold the newborn baby and before leaving we joined him as he prayed for the joy-filled family. Those pleasurable opportunities are among the greatest memories pastors store up while serving a church!

I shared with Bob a recollection I had from over 25 years earlier when, in my pastoral role, I also held a newborn within hours of her birth. Months later I dedicated Becky and she reminded me last night, in a phone conversation, that I also baptized her. Although we moved on from that area nearly 15 years ago we've stayed in contact through the years. Becky went on to a Christian College and is now a school teacher. This Saturday I will take part in her wedding in Virginia, serving communion to them. That will be another one of the most fulfilling times to be a pastor! Jason and Becky both serve the Lord together and plan to build a family based on God's Word.

The work of Christ's Kingdom has gone forth from generation to generation. It will most certainly continue to do so until the Lord returns, for we can be confident in the truth expressed by our Lord, "I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

As adults we certainly recognize that the teen years were especially tumultuous to our Christian faith. We've been there and we had the same questions that teens ask today. Some of us rebelled while others stayed relatively steady through those years. Still others came to know the Lord in the midst of those impressionable years.

Currently teenagers are barraged with temptation in ways my generation was not. (And surely there was plenty of temptation 35 years ago!) But consider the cultural slide into immorality over the last 35 years. I recall "Happy Days", the popular TV show from the seventies seeming a bit risqué at the time. Now the mere previews of current TV programming and big screen movies require a quick click on the remote.

Josiah also lived in a time of tremendous decadence about 2,600 years ago. His reforms stalled the inevitable judgment of God but he was the last notable king to provide godly leadership. Shortly after his death the people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon.

Please note the portion of the daily text, "While he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his father David." That's great isn't it! There's something extra special when we see spiritual interest in our children and youth. To see them reap the blessings of God and avoid the long-term consequences that comes from living a life of sin is especially rewarding.

Brooksyne and I are most heartened when we get emails from Daily Encouragement readers who are teenagers and young adults. In fact our daily writing ministry gives us the opportunity to stay in contact with many of the "kids" who grew up in our ministry. It reminds us of God's promise that when parents train their children in the ways of the Lord they will see a fruitful harvest. On Sunday night it was a joy to see our daughter, Ester, join other youth as they led the congregation in singing praise to the Lord, though we know there is a battle raging in her soul. Oh, how we want her to seek God daily in her life!

Young or old, let us seek the Lord today. He ever remains a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him! May our prayer always be, "Draw me close to you."

Daily prayer: Father, we want to be diligent seekers and doers of Your Holy Word. We pray that, like Josiah, we will do right in Your sight and follow in the ways of godly training. Help us not to veer off course, but to stay on the straight and narrow way that leads to blessings in this life and untold blessings in the life to come. Amen.

As I studied for today's message I considered some youth in Josiah's generation who were taken captive, yet remained faithful to God. Do you recall the story?

Brooksyne found this photo of her holding Becky as an infant. I am holding Jessica, a foster child we had at the time. This was taken in 1981.

Yesterday Ester began the process of preparing 13 dozen ears of corn for freezing. Ester enjoys shucking so she came up with her own method of covering the table as Brooksyne was preparing pans for the blanching process. Following blanching she tediously cuts off the corn from the cobs and we enjoy delicious corn all winter! I think Ester volunteers for the shucking job because she's continually sneaking around eating the corn silk (yek!)

"Our Greatest Longing"

"Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing" (2 Timothy 4:8).

This weekend our friends, Ken and Nila, had their first baby. They have both been so excited but I don't believe I have ever seen an expectant father as excited as Ken. Since they announced Nila's expectant condition Ken has longed to hold this baby in his arms! He frequently asked us to pray in our care group that he would measure up as a godly father and be able to meet the challenges of raising his child from infancy into adulthood.

David Lee was born Saturday morning and what a joy to receive Ken's call with the good news! Today they expect to bring the baby home and that will be another exciting time for them. Brooksyne's taking supper over to the celebrating family this evening.

Here in Lancaster County the Women and Babies Hospital is built right next to the Hospice Center, where the temporary residents are at the end stages of life. The two buildings are quite a contrast; one primarily for the transition into this life (birth), the other for the inevitable transition out (death). In the course of our ministry we have made numerous visits to the hospice and when Brooksyne's mom passed on five years ago hospice played a vital medical role as well as a personal comforting role. Lou Guiliano, a minister friend, has served as a hospice chaplain for a number of years and was recognized as the New Jersey Hospice Chaplain of the Year in 2006. He's involved in a very needed and critically important form of ministry.

Both the Women and Babies Hospital and the Hospice Center deal with expectations. But an entirely different form of expectation takes place in hospice. For some it's a sense of fear and dread, but for others it's an expectation of their pending transfer to heaven. For those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ it is a lifetime longing finally being fulfilled following the fierce battle that rages between life and death.

Today we are all "longing for" something. There are many secondary longings that come and go in the course of a lifetime. There are good temporal longings as well as undesirable ones that we seek to be rid of. But all we that love Christ should have a deep, abiding desire for the appearing of our Lord. This should be our greatest longing that is not fleeting and is supremely secondary to any of our temporal longings.

Paul in our daily verse has come to the closing days of his life on this earth. In the previous verses he solemnly acknowledged that "the time has come for my departure" (v.6) and stated, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (v.7). With great anticipation he looked forward to receiving "the crown of righteousness" that was stored up for him, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, would award him on the appointed day.

Since Paul's remarkable conversion on the Damascus Road he had given his life in service for the Lord Jesus Christ. Some 30 years had passed since that time and Paul had stayed the course. I sense such a confidence and peace in his words, even as he faced a martyr's death. Earlier in this very letter he expressed his assurance, "I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day" (1:12).

There's something else in the verse that captures my attention. Just five little words but they speak volumes to those of us who, like Paul, strive to stay on course with Christ in this decadent age.

"And not only to me."

Paul gives us a great word here. You and I must cling to it today. His words are not intended exclusively for Timothy to whom he was writing. Instead he directs them to each reader, "but also to all who have longed for His appearing." Paul looked forward earnestly to that day when he would see the Lord and often expresses it in his writings. The healthy state for the believer is to "long for" His appearing. That's our greatest longing. Let's keep our focus on that today!

Daily prayer: Father, help us to remember in the course of this day, when so much of our work and planning is intended for this life only, that we must also fix our eyes on the life yet to come. May all that we say, think, and do reflect kingdom principles that store up treasures for us in our heavenly kingdom even while we serve here below. Since we don't know the day nor the hour we can live in eager anticipation each day because this could be the day for our glorious transfer into Your divine presence. Nothing in this life compares with the joy that awaits those who long for Your magnificent appearing! Amen.

Some of our weekend experiences

Saturday we went to a benefit auction at an Amish one room schoolhouse in Perry County about an hour northwest of us. Perry County is a very rural area and is mostly in a lush valley between two mountain ridges. I've read there's not a single traffic light in the entire county.

Here's a sight I suppose most of you haven't seen. The horse ride for the children also powered the crank for the home-made ice cream.

Saturday evening we went to a picnic at Ester's youth leader's home and the kids went swimming and boating in the pond. Dan, one of her leaders, is doing the cannonball splash and Ester is ready.

Jay prepared the barbecue chicken. It was delicious!

Sunday evening Ester (far right) joined the youth praise team as we enjoyed a neighborhood ice cream social at our church.
