Nursery cat
I've noticed that many cats seem to enjoy trying out different sleeping places. Our cat Dottie will always check out any new place we have. We saw this cat peacefully resting in a berry box at a checkout line at a local nursery as a worker potted plants beside her!

"Divine Omniscience"

"He knows everything" (1 John 3:20b).

Math symbolWhen you see the graphic to the left what do you think it is? A pair of glasses? Actually it's something else.

I heard a speaker share his testimony at a Christian Businessman's luncheon. He had a doctorate in engineering and of course he was quite proficient in math.

He shared how that many years earlier he had a wooden plaque carving with the above symbol which he kept on his desk. His little daughter came up to him, picked it up, and said, "I know what this is Daddy."   She then turned it on its side and showed him that it was an eight! (Brooksyne's note: My observation would lead to the same conclusion, by the way.)

Now some of you know that the plaque carving is actually the symbol for infinity, a concept that was far beyond his little daughter's understanding.  Infinity is a concept in mathematics  and philosophy that refers to a quantity without bound or end.

Googol Google is a popular search engine that most of us are familiar with and have probably used many times.  It's named after a rather obscure number called a googol.  Now it's been a few years since I studied math which was never one of my stronger subjects, so I have a hard time even expressing this figure, which is 10 to the power of one hundred or 1 with a hundred 0's after it. I read that this is more than all the hydrogen atoms in the universe, but the article didn't specify who counted them. I suppose that's about as close to infinity as you can get on this side!  However, actually of course infinity is beyond this by it's very definition.

The daily Scripture portion succinctly describes the attribute of God known as omniscience. "He knows everything." Omniscience is the capacity to know everything infinitely.

Elsewhere the Scriptures teach this using illustrations such as the number of hairs on our heads being numbered (every hair on every head, present tense).  In Scripture the purpose of expressing this knowledge is to give the believer an assurance of God's care.  In the case of our hairs being counted it's in the context of "Why do you worry?"  In the case of the daily text it's in regard to the assurance of our hearts understanding  God's forgiveness.

Today we can receive tremendous encouragement from the truth that God knows everything.  He is active both macroscopically and microscopically.  He is involved not only in the big picture, but He is also actively involved in the minute details of our lives (keeping track of the hairs on your head for example, even though you may have observed you left some on the comb).

So, as His children redeemed by faith in Christ, let us find great assurance and deep-settled peace in knowing that God is all-knowing. Since we know only in part and see only through a glass darkly let us make sure that we don't attempt to do the leading, but follow the leading of our omniscient God!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path giving direction when I would otherwise be led astray. Help me to daily remember that You do the leading and I do the following, since You know all things including the past, present and future.  In Your infinite knowledge and wisdom You watch over me, care for my needs and lead me in the paths of righteousness for Your Name's sake and I'm grateful for it.  Amen.

Matt's garden sprinkler system
We visited a friend in Lancaster who is an industrial designer. If you've been in a Home Depot or Lowes store you've probably seen a display that Matt had a hand in designing. The wrought iron fence (pictured above) borders the colorful flower garden Matt planted next to his house. He also built and designed birdhouses that he attached to the fence and then installed sprinkler heads that comes up through the roof of the bird houses and waters his gardens!  (It's a design that Brooksyne would sure enjoy when it comes to watering the many flowers she plants, but I'm sure not that clever.)

Matt's garden sprinkler system
Here is a photo of the sprinkler at work, along with a beautiful rose plant!

Matt's garden water feature
Matt designed this interesting water feature with bamboo shoots filling pots which had a pleasant running water sound. However he explained it was not really bamboo shoots, but white pvc pipe which he had carefully painted in a detail that sure had Brooksyne and me fooled!

Desk & rocking chair at George's Woodcrafts
We went to an open house at George's Woodcrafts, a local business celebrating 40 years.  They make heirloom quality furniture and are best known for making tables that have as many as sixteen leafs. These are, of course, made for very large gatherings such as the time we joined an old order Mennonite family for a meal following a church service and some 25 sat of us around a single table! I am sitting at an adjustable desk that George invented for a nursing home patient.

Cattle trough planter
I thought this long planter was interesting at George's Woodcraft.
It used to be a cattle trough!

"Do Something!"

"Although our sins testify against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your Name. For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you" (Jeremiah 14:7).

Jeremiah lived during the years immediately prior to Israel's destruction and captivity in Babylon.  The spiritual and physical conditions were horrific, as was the present drought that was devastating the land. God's judgment fell not only on the idolaters but also upon His own people (read Lamentations 2).  Jeremiah pleaded with the people to repent and turn to God and earnestly prayed, as expressed in the daily Scripture verse.

He begins with a confession of sin; "Our sins testify against us.  For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you." Jeremiah did not argue the basis of God's judgment but readily acknowledged the sins that were an inarguable testimony against the character of God's people. He appealed to God's mercy based on His sinless character and for His honor and glory.

"O LORD, do something for the sake of Your Name." I find his appeal so interesting, reflecting the desperation of the times: "Do something" he cried out, without being specific.  As I consider the state of our country and world today I find myself also using this prayerful non- specific appeal. I want God to act but am uncertain of what that action will look like or how it will be played out. As the great sins in our land and the world are considered, will this action be:
1) The return of God's Son in the culmination of the Church Age,
2) A great revival bringing a restoration of living by God's standards or
3) A pouring out of His powerful judgment.

I sense that we are at a tipping point and soon will find out. Our call, however God chooses to act, is to stay faithful.

The basis of Jeremiah's appeal was "for the sake of Your Name." Surely Jeremiah was considering much more than his own personal comfort and well-being and more than that of the people he cared so deeply for, including his own family.

He was concerned for the sake of God's Name.  He had seen the mighty acts of God in the past and certainly didn't want God to be viewed by the unrighteous as a powerless, helpless God.  Visible yet inanimate, powerless, and false god-like figures of the unbelieving nations surrounded him.  Jeremiah points out the stunning contrast of such idols as he threw in a probing question in verse 22:  "Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?"

Surely he wondered how all this fit in with the promised Messiah and the establishment of God's kingdom.  Well, God did indeed do something, although it wasn't in the typical fashion of fairy tales that usually sums up their story with, "and they lived happily ever after". Indeed God's judgment came upon the land and the Israelites were taken captive in Babylon. Yet God always has a plan for His people even if it is carried out while in captivity or under His judgment.  Those who remained faithful to Him are known as "the remnant".  (see Ezra 9:13)

Today God is doing something and will continue to do something.  He is reigning and His kingdom will come. May our driving cry for God's intervention, in whatever form it is be revealed not be so much for our personal comfort, but for the "sake of God's Name".  Notwithstanding the reality of evil, be deeply assured today, that God's ultimate plan for His children is always indescribably good!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer:  Father, we too must cry out with Jeremiah, "Our sins testify against us."  Our behavior reflects the inner desires of our hearts and so many times it does not reveal God-like character. Worthless idols all too often replace the devotion that once belonged only to You. We repent of our sins and seek Your intervention to cleanse our hearts and heal our land for the sake of Your name, for Your honor and glory.  In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen.

Yesterday we wrote about the severe storm that passed through our area on Monday. Our neighbor Leon called yesterday and told me his dad's barn had come down and welcomed me to come over and take a look.

Rutt farm 6/1/10
The barn was built in 1815, apparently replacing another barn (based on the age of the farmhouse). I was always intrigued
by the use of brick as a barn material and by the ventilation holes.

Rutt farm 6/1/10
The neighbors and church people were already busy cleaning up yesterday afternoon and they plan to rebuild. We may see an old order barn raising; a wonderful example of cooperation as the church folks come together. The men build the barn and the women prepare food.

Rutt farm 6/1/10
The only damage
to the stone farmhouse which was built in 1772 was a blown out attic window.

Rutt rose bush 6/1/10
This rose bush on the Rutt farm looked great yesterday afternoon after enduring such a pounding storm with quarter size hail. The corn crop did not fare as well and is the worst Mervin has ever seen. But he believes it will bounce back since, thankfully, the stalks are so little.

Today's farm is also seen in most of the sunset photos I take from our home such as here.

Memorial Day storm 5/31/10
The Memorial Day storm filled our front lawn and surrounded our sign. Brooksyne had just planted tiny flower seed all around the sign, which was most likely washed away.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Lessons From The Storm"

"Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do His bidding"  (Psalm 148:7,8).

Late yesterday afternoon we had a memorable Memorial Day storm. It began shortly before our friends, Ken and Nila, and their two boys joined us for dinner and it rained heavily all through our meal. Over just a couple of hours we had four inches of pounding rain, hail the size of quarters, howling winds and crackling thunder along with the fireworks of lightning that brightened the dark skies. We watched out our front window as a large pond formed in our lawn due to the rapidly rising waters.

After the storm passed through we walked out and assessed the damage up close.  Ester had some fun with little David in the "pond" and then, like many curious neighbors, we drove around to examine the storm's damage. Especially interesting was the surging high waters on a normally shallow and gentle Donegal Creek.

Neighbors had come together; some bailing out water from their garages and basements. But today we awakened to a beautiful day and already this morning I cleaned up numerous branches and storm debris in our yard.  With the early sun accompanied by a significant continuous breeze the pond is already dried up which will be a big disappointment the next time David comes over expecting to play in the Weber "pond"!

I must admit I really like storms. Certainly not the damage, injuries or deaths but the awesome display of God's sovereign power. Psalm 148 is not necessarily one of the better known Psalms and I doubt if very many of you would list it as among your favorites. It begins with a Hebrew phrase that we also use in the English; "Hallelu Yah". We also use the word, hallelujah, in the English, which is translated "Praise the Lord."  In fact the word "praise" is found 12 times in this short Psalm.

Consider the portion of our daily verse that states, "that do His bidding".  Although it seems the focus of Psalm 148 is to express the universal praise of which God is worthy, this little portion is a part of God's Word and merits our attention.

The KJV translates this phrase, "fulfilling His word."  This phrase seems to grammatically associate with those words that immediately precede it; "lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds".  Generally these are conditions in which we find discomfort. But God's Word says they "do His bidding."

Remember this the next time you face a storm whether it's literal or spiritual.  God has authority over the storms that reap havoc all about us.  The peace of God prevails in our hearts when we recognize the storms ultimately do His bidding.

Peace be StillToday the immutable God is still at work controlling nature.  In times past He has ordained periods of drought to remind mankind of Who is really in charge and certainly that could happen again.  But last evening here in southern Pennsylvania we had a demonstrable rain, though certainly not in the amount that Nashville, Tennessee or more recently Guatemala has endured with the tropic floods.

Yet we are to "praise God from whom all blessings flow" in the midst of plenty and in times of want, in times of flourishing rains and in times of drought.  We acknowledge with Jeremiah that God is our absolute source of hope in the storms, both literally and figuratively, this day and every day.  "Therefore our hope is in You, for You are the One who does all this" (Jeremiah 14:22).

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Jesus, You are the Peacespeaker who controls the winds and waves.  All of Your creation must submit to Your bidding. Nothing escapes Your attention nor can anything exceed Your power or authority.  Help us to trust You during the times of calm and during the tidal waves of life.  You're an ever-present, ever-powerful God who is ever-worthy of all our ever-lasting praise.  Amen.

Psalm 148

Some more photos from our Memorial Day storm

Memorial Day storm 5/31/10
We watched out our picture window as the waters rose in our front lawn to form a pond (the road is in the background). This picture doesn't show it very well but we found it interesting to watch the hail hit the water, which gave the appearance of many small fish feeding.
It made me want to go fishing!

Memorial Day storm rain gauge 5/31/10Here's our rain guage following the storm. Each inch of rain spread over an acre is equal to some 27,000 gallons of water. Since we live on a 1/2 acre lot we had over 50,000 gallons poured on us yesterday afternoon! Billions of gallons of rain fell over our entire region in just a couple of hours! This leads me to consider this aspect of what theologians call "common grace" (God's goodness expressed to all people, both the redeemed and unredeemed.) The water is spread over the earth incrementally in drops rather than poured out all at once in one place, as we would empty a bucket.  That to me is another powerful, yet often overlooked, evidence of "intelligent design" that points to our Creator.

Ester and David playing in pond following Memorial Day storm 5/31/10
After the storm passed Ester and David enjoyed playing in the "pond"!

Donegal Creek, Memorial Day storm 5/31/10
This was a section of the Donegal Creek flood waters below us on Trout Run Road.

Donegal Creek, Memorial Day storm 5/31/10
This section of Donegal Creek, seen from Colebrook Road is above us. Since the creek only starts a mile or two above this point it's amazing to see how much water can accumulate so quickly. We watched from the bridge as my neighbor Lester's heifers walked into the flooded waters. He was concerned that one would fall over and drown or keep moving toward us and get sucked into the culvert under the bridge.
