"The Sure Foundation" "He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure" (Isaiah 33:6). Have you ever held a billiard ball in your hand? It is about as smooth as you can imagine. Interestingly I've read that proportionately the surface of the earth is smoother than a billiard ball! Dr. John O'Keefe (now deceased), a planetary scientist who worked for NASA, stated that the most extreme variations in the earth's surface are roughly on a scale of one part in a thousand. The equivalent bump on a 2 1/4-inch billiard ball would be about two-thousandths of an inch, so most parts of the Earth are a lot smoother. But from our perspective, living on it, the earth is quite bumpy! You can also see this when we view it or even feel it on a raised relief map or globe. But from the view of Mars those differences are not detectable at all. This is illustrative as we seek to get a perspective on life, the world situation or even that steep hill or dark valley within our own lives. What a wonderful truth and rich assurance our daily text provides for the believer! How we need to appropriate its truth deep within our hearts as we especially focus on the first part of the verse: "He will be the sure foundation for your times."  The KJV uses the phrase "stability of thy times". The Hebrew word that the prophet Isaiah uses here connotes "firmness, security, fidelity".  Truly in God we have a firm foundation for all our times. Hannah, rejoicing at the miraculous birth of her son Samuel, prayed, "There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God" (1 Samuel 2:2). Life is made up of various times, all of which are ordained of God for His glory and for our growth. Much of our times are spent in abundant blessing. These are the times when we might say, "Life is going smoothly." It is easy to overlook these "smooth" times in our lives and take them for granted, or worse yet, feel that we're entitled to them. However we can easily recall times of difficulty. Life gets bumpy! For some of you it's that way as you read this. It may be a long-term illness in our home, the loss of a job, a broken relationship or other types of uncertainties that can grip our hearts and fill us with fear. It seems that with constant threats of terrorist attacks and decreasing security our world is entering into a time of increasing trouble and instability. The "perilous times" spoken of in the Scriptures may very well characterize the "last days" in which we live.  (See 2 Timothy 3:1.) God and His Word provide the steady anchor and sure foundation for our spiritual security and peace. Consider again just the opening phrase in our daily verse: "He will be the sure foundation for your times."  What kind of "times" are you going through today? We encourage you to focus on the immutable God whose Word has promised: "You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal" (Isaiah 26:3,4). Today, rest in the assurance that in God we have a sure foundation for all our times; the good, the bad, the easy, the difficult, the memorable and that which we would like to forget. We serve a God of absolute stability; One of whom it is said, "There is no Rock like our God".    Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, thank You for the treasure chest of Your riches; salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.  The treasure trove which You invite us to partake of stabilizes our hearts when instability surrounds us.  Your salvation, wisdom and knowledge surpass those passing and temporal treasures experienced in this mortal life.  We walk by faith and not by sight, so keep us steadfast in our times as we hold to You our sure foundation, for there is no Rock like You, our God.  Keep our eyes on the invisible God, for though we cannot see You we love You and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, as we await our glorious union in heaven.  Amen. PS: I have personally found Scripture memorization a very helpful discipline in my life. However I know that some find this discipline easier than others. A suggestion: Consider memorizing only part of a verse such as the selection used in the daily text. I also at times use the 1st person pronoun to personalize the verse. For example, "He will be the sure foundation for my times" or "God will be the sure foundation for my times." I do believe memorizing the reference is important as well. Listen to this message on your audio player. "Knowing The Way"   "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me" (John 14:1).  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).   I went to my first Billy Graham Crusade as a child in 1967 at the old Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Throughout my lifetime I've attended several other crusades and was always blessed by Billy Graham's simple and earnest presentation of the Gospel. I continue to be inspired by his faithfulness to God's call on his life. As he nears the end of the race he has maintained his integrity, a great example to all of us, and in particular for those in vocational ministry. Billy Graham will turn 92 this November. Just prior to his death Paul made an assessment of his Christian testimony; "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).  Even in his later years he has demonstrated his remarkable communication skills. Civic leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, his home town, invited him to a luncheon in his honor.  He initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggles with Parkinson's disease.  But the Charlotte leaders said, "We don't expect a major address. Just come and let us honor you." So he agreed. After wonderful things were said about him, he stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, and said, "I'm reminded today of a story concerning Albert Einstein, the great physicist. Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn't find his ticket so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn't there.   He looked in his briefcase but couldn't find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn't find it.  The conductor said, 'Dr. Einstein, I know who you are.  We all know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket.  Don't worry about it.'   Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.    The conductor rushed back and said, 'Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don't worry, I know who you are; no problem.  You don't need a ticket.  I'm sure you bought one.' Einstein looked at him and said, 'Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don't know is where I'm going.'' Having said that Billy Graham continued, 'See the suit I'm wearing? It's a brand new suit. My children and my grandchildren are telling me I've gotten a little slovenly in my old age. I used to be a bit more fastidious. So I went out and bought a new suit for this luncheon and one more occasion.   You know what that occasion is? This is the suit in which I'll be buried. But when you hear I'm dead, I don't want you to immediately remember the suit I'm wearing.   I want you to remember this: I not only know who I am. I also know where I'm going.'" Knowing where we are going and the way to get there is important for any journey. This of course is vitally true in regard to our eternal destination. In the section of Scripture in which our daily texts are found the disciples had asked two questions: "Lord, where are You going?" Peter asked in John 13:36. "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?" Thomas asked in John 14:5. Jesus answers this question with one of the most memorized and quoted verses in the Bible. "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." In His answer He doesn't give either a specific location as to where He is going nor a specific route in which to get there. Rather He states, "I am the way" as to the route and "to the Father" as the destination. He gave this word of direction and assurance as He was preparing His disciples for the climactic events that would take place over the next several days. He knew their hearts were troubled. However His words are very applicable to any situation or trouble that His followers all through the ages deal with. Let us again hear these solemn words from our Lord: "Do not let your hearts be troubled".  Just as Jesus knew all the events that would transpire for the disciples, He also knows the events that will unfold in our lives. He will lead us through the perplexing mazes of life as we keep our focus centered on Him who is "The Way". He will reveal to us that which we need to know when we need to know it, though our full understanding may not come at the same time.  We saw with the disciples and other biblical characters such as Joseph, the three Hebrew children, and Daniel.   "Trust in God; trust also in Me," Jesus said.  The key to having peace in our heart in the midst of trouble is to keep our trust and focus on the Lord. Today we pray that trust and assurance will flood your heart so that you will be filled with His peace though you may not have complete understanding.  The antidote for a fearful heart is a trusting heart.  "O for grace to trust Him more!" Above all He offers "peace of heart" in the midst of troubling circumstances because His followers know where they are going and the way to get there.      Be encouraged today,     Stephen & Brooksyne Weber   Daily prayer: Father, help me not to be anxious about perplexing matters before me, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, I want to present my requests to You so that Your peace which surpasses human understanding will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.  Keep my eyes on Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life because that is the way to You, our Heavenly Father.  In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen. Philippians 4:6, John 14:6 The "I Am" statements of Jesus: Jesus asserted His deity in using this phrase to describe Himself, particularly in the Gospel of John. I've been sharing photos from this farm stand the last several days. Looks like Elam has plenty of help on the farm along with two older daughters not shown! He established this nursery last Spring and is doing well selling decorative plants as well as vegetables grown on their farm. Readers from our area stopped by our house this morning attempting to find this farm so we led the way and visited it again.  We learned that Elam started working construction today so his family will be provided for over the winter which was an answer to their prayers! Listen to this message on your audio player. "No Adjournment For The Godly" "Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases to be. For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men" (Psalm 12:1). "Contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints" (Jude 3). "Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care" (1 Timothy 6:20).  "Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us" (2 Timothy 1:14). The inspiration for today's Daily Encouragement comes from a song originally recorded by a group called "Truth". It's titled "God Is In Control" and I have often been ministered to by the assurance it brings as I listen carefully to the words.  For the last several days I have been intrigued and challenged by a line in the beginning of the song that powerfully describes our times: "Does it seem like the world is chaotically turning sin and shame are unreigned and, Godly men are adjourning." Yesterday I kept pushing the replay button on the CD player in our van as I was especially considering that phrase, "Godly men are adjourning." I consider the sense of adjournment in regard to a meeting coming to an end. It is indeed a sad day when Godly men and women adjourn themselves from the great spiritual battle before it has ended.  Laying their spiritual armor down, they're dismissing themselves in the midst of our ongoing struggle against the rulers, against the authorities and against the powers of this dark world (Ephesians 6:12). Consider the first daily text in this regard:  "Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases to be. For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men." David expresses himself in a way that we might also in our own day.  His cry for help is directed to the Lord.  His observation is that "the godly man ceases to be".  David grew up during a time of great moral and spiritual apostasy.  Certainly Saul's reign was not marked by spiritual revival or consistent obedience to God. His reign transitioned from the period of the Judges, which is summed up with the phrase, "each man did what was right in his own eyes." However there was a remnant of God's faithful followers during this period.  The prophet Samuel immediately comes to mind. Thank God for those who remain faithful followers of God all through history and right up to our own day: Faithful ministers who preach God's Word uncompromisingly, not seeking to please or accommodate the ways of the world. Dedicated lay persons who live out their faith before an oft-scorning world. Couples who take their marital covenant seriously. Singles who walk the Christian path in holiness, solitude and purity. Parents who raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Church communities that do not give up meeting together, but encourage one another as they see the day approaching (Hebrews 10:25) I am convinced that there will always be a remnant church, faithfully holding to the truths of Holy Scripture till our Lord returns.  Christ has stated that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church of God (Matthew 16:18). This true church may very well be hated by the world, for as it contends for the truth and the faith once for all entrusted to the saints, it will be labeled intolerant, mean-spirited, hateful and even dangerous. In fact it is even now often characterized in this way by the media and in other settings. May the Lord help us to be faithful in holding onto the Living Word and preserving its uncompromised message through our conversation and in our lifestyle.  Let us pass this glorious message on to the next generation in our present passing zone.  Let us not customize or interpret God's timeless truths set forth in His Word, based on our own preferences.  It is commonplace in our day to modify or edit truths set forth in Scripture.   Analogous to using the "delete" or "insert" buttons on a present day computer, some adjust their viewpoints to fit in comfortably to the trends of our society. But thank God there is also a faithful remnant that holds on to the faith "once for all handed down".  That faithful remnant is alive and well in the tidal wave of mockery, modification, and outright blasphemy toward God's Holy Word and Christian standards.  We earnestly appeal to every reader to be a part of God's holy remnant.  In the midst of doctrinal apostasy we need to stand up boldly for our faith in God and confront the heresies of our day.  In the midst of moral apostasy we need to boldly assert the timeless standards of personal holiness and seek daily to live by them. Let us stay faithful! For the godly man and woman there is no adjournment from life's spiritual battle until we are called home.  It is in our heavenly setting that the battle will no longer rage and we will finally experience everlasting peace.  Sin will be adjourned and the righteous remnant will forever reign with the King of kings and Lord of lords. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, the commandments that You give are not only to be impressed upon our thoughts but also implanted in our hearts.  Help us to be extremely cautious about new teachings that are pleasing to the ear and popular with our present generation, but do not bear witness with the eternal Scripture.  Keep us on guard against the easy-isms of a shallow Christian experience, for that will eventually give way to surrendering to the enemy in the midst of the spiritual battle of this life.   We hold on to that which is of most importance and pass on to those who come behind the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints of all generations.  Keep us faithful no matter the cost.  In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen. Yesterday and all through the night we have had heavy rains which are real blesing after the dry summer we endured. We spoke to a neighbor today who told us in another part of Lancaster County they had 10 inches of rain!  We got about 6". Finally today: Several weeks ago I shared how all throughout our county we see similar type signs presenting a Christian witness such as the signs below on Colebrook Road near our home.
