"A Divided Kingdom"

"Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, 'Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand'" (Matthew 12:25).

Yesterday we had an election of historical proportion here in America. Some are pleased, others not so much.  Elections are very important to a nation and its people but, as we shared yesterday, our hope for positive and eternal change is not found through politics. Only God can change the spiritual condition of the heart, not the leaders of the land. "It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings" (Daniel 2:21). *

Jesus makes a powerful observation in the daily text. He addresses division in the spiritual realm but He illustrates this teaching based on the observable: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand." In referring to "every kingdom" we can understand this as every nation and He reinforces that by extending it to smaller social units such as "city" and "household".  This is easily observed as we regularly read about corruption on the local level.  And far too many households are shattered by strife resulting in divorce and broken families.

Here in America we have a two party system and there are also minor parties.  Among these groups there has always been division to some degree. But the increasing division extends to foundational moral issues, most notably in our day the constitution of holy marriage and the value of human life. It's astounding the gains that secularists have made in my lifetime alone. Even so many parts of the visible church are grievously infected.

Christ's words are true. History attests to this: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined." The kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan cannot be united kingdoms since their mission statements stand in stark contrast.

Likewise a country cannot remain divided, for the time of ruin is certain though the exact date may not be specified. We need a great revival in America and a coming together in unity under God's holy standards which in my view will come only as a result of a genuine nationwide revival. Otherwise our country will slide more and more into decadence and eventual ruin.

Today we are writing to encourage true followers of Christ all over the world. God is sovereign over my life, family and nation. Indeed His Kingdom has come to those who seek to live for Him. Our call is to remain faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Scriptures no matter the outcome of the election or the ever-changing state of affairs in our nation and world.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, as we seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness above everything else You will provide for all our needs.  The kingdom of this world is temporal, self-serving, and polluted by the wiles of Satan's strategies to steal, kill and destroy.  It is headed for total destruction.  But, as believers, we follow after Christ who brings abundant life as we renounce the world and enter into His kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy.  Though the world may crumble around us, our hope remains fixed on the eternal kingdom not seen with human eyes.  Such anticipation fills us with inexpressible and glorious joy as we await the day that Jesus Christ is revealed in all His glory, splendor and holiness.  Amen.

* We do well to slowly and thoughtfully read this prayer from Daniel 2:19-23: "Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding. It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him. To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, For You have given me wisdom and power; even now You have made known to me what we requested of You, for You have made known to us the king's matter."

Today we share some photos from our travels on the beautiful autumn day we had yesterday.

"The Heavenly Kingdom"

"My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36).

Today is Election Day here in the USA.  Though we have readers from all over the world I write particularly with the American election in mind, though our Biblical message is pertinent to every nation.

All over our country there are highly contested races, including several right here in Pennsylvania.  Throughout the autumn we have been barraged with campaign ads on TV and radio, through mail, road signs and phone calls. I note that many are also using the internet, apparently targeting me based on key words in a search.

Campaign signholders in Massachusetts
I recall a peculiar trait of New England campaigning when we lived up that way in the 1990's.  For several weeks prior to the election supporters of each candidate gather at busy intersections holding political signs, waving, and flashing big grins at passing motorists.  It's quite a sight.  I liked to wave and grin right back at them! However I never made my voting decisions based on how heartily someone waved, how big their smile was or the prominence of politician's names posted on signs! Since our church served as a polling place campaign supporters gathered at the highway out in front grinning and waving as people came in to vote.  Now maybe that's an idea for church greeters on Sunday mornings!

There are various reasons that people will choose to vote as they do today. Some simply vote along political party lines giving little thought or research about the actual persons they elect to office. Others base their vote on how they are told by an organization, but give little thought to the deep values that should be of utmost importance.

Two major competing ideologies divide our nation this election day. We will support the candidates we feel most closely uphold the Biblical position in regard to several issues we feel are vital to our nation's
survival, security, prosperity and moral wellbeing.  But we must keep in mind that politics is not the key to surviving as a nation. We must remember where our real home is.

Although I am a natural born citizen of the US, born in Kansas City Missouri in 1954, my primary eternal citizenship was established in heaven in 1971 when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.  And that's where my first allegiance lies. *

The dominant system when Jesus was on this earth ultimately determined that His views were worthy of death.  At His trial before Pilate He calmly got right to the heart of the matter, "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36). Earlier in an exchange with the religious leaders of His day He minced no words, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world" (John 8:23).

We want to have a perspective that reflects the words of Christ.  We want to remember where our ultimate citizenship lies.

The Apostle Paul said, "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:20).  Let's all remember that!  In doing so we will have an inner peace that does not change based on the circumstances of the day or whether "our side" wins or loses in this political election.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, we pray for our election today here in the U.S.  Many votes will be cast and it is our prayer that those who most reflect our godly values along with good leadership qualities will be elected to office.  There is much we can do to make a difference in the spiritual landscape of our country, and yet we live in a world where the prince of darkness rules.  Help us to remain vigilant as we live in this darkened world and choose not to partake of the world's hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on the basic principles and practices of this world rather than on Christ.  It is in the powerful name of Jesus that we pray.  Amen.
See Colossians 2:8

This world is not my home; I'm just a passing through.
My treasures are laid up, somewhere beyond the blue.
The angels beckon me, from Heaven's Open Door.
And I don't feel at home in this world anymore!

* Brooksyne was born in Tulsa OK in 1955 and accepted Christ as a young teenager. We, of course share the same focus on our heavenly citizenship!

Today we will share an assortment of photos from our last breakfast stop
in Pigeon Forge Tennessee at the Apple Barn restaurant and some visits we made on the way back north to Pennsylvania.

Apple Barn restaurant in Pigeon Forge TN 10/29/10
We enjoyed walking by this stately maple tree on our way to the Apple Barn restaurant where we had breakfast with my sister and her husband Friday morning before departing Pigeon Forge for our long trip back to Pennsylvania. We sure enjoyed the meal but especially the apple fritters that are complimentary to every meal!

Apple Barn cardinal in Pigeon Forge TN 10/29/10
The Apple Barn was all about apples and included this bird feeder with a carved cardinal!

Marilyn with Jesse & Wilma 10/30/10
On the way back we picked up our friends Jesse and Wilma, who had been staying with their daughter and family in Roanoke, VA. (We had dropped them off on the way down.) Jesse is a retired pastor and he and Wilma have a vibrant faith in the Lord and spread God's blessing wherever they go. We hope we have as much energy as they have when we are in  our mid and upper eighties!

We drove up to the Washington, DC area to visit our friend Marilyn (center of photo). We met Marilyn through this ministry a number of years ago and have had several opportunities to fellowship with her. She prepared a very nice lunch and even provided a delicious birthday cake for Brooksyne. Lunch was followed by a spiritually enriching time as Wilma and Marilyn both shared their testimonies of how they committed their lives to Christ.

Brooksyne playing Steinway grand piano
Brooksyne enjoyed playing the Steinway piano in Marilyn's home and it sounded beautiful as it's rich tones resounded through the large open house. She was playing "Jesus Loves Me" as Jesse who stood on the balcony overlooking the piano and sang out in a clear baritone voice at 87 years of age.

Thompson family 10/30/10
Ester stayed the entire week with our friends Dean and Jill and their children while we were in Tennessee. They live on a farm in rural Maryland.  They are also friends through daily encouragement and Dean is Marilyn's son. They have five children; ages 4,3,2, & 1 (doubled)!  Ester sure enjoyed driving the Gator shown in the left background.

"Thou Art The Potter,
I Am The Clay"

"O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand" (Isaiah 64:8). "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you My message" (Jeremiah 18:2).

Last Thursday Brooksyne along with my sister Genelle visited the Old Mill Pottery store in Pigeon Forge. Genelle's husband Cesar and I "patiently" walked the grounds as they took their time admiring the handmade ceramic pottery displays of vases, mugs, planters and other handcrafted designs.  During the afternoon visitors could observe craftsmen at work as they molded and shaped pliable clay in accordance with their creative skills.

Potter's hand
Many of us have tried our hand at making pottery all the way back to our art classes in Grade School.  The results may not have been quite to our liking, at least for those of us who are artistically challenged. I still remember the art teacher displaying  the pottery students had made including mugs, ash trays, and other such small projects common to our day.  Mine didn't look nearly as nice as other artistic students, but after I brought it home Mom put it out on the coffee table showing it off to others.  Interestingly, among the report cards, trophies, and ribbons she saved over the years I don't have any of my special pottery pieces among them.

I can easily recall some powerful sermons I've heard when the teacher used a pottery wheel to demonstrate the points in a very illustrative way. Today let's consider a great lesson that took place about 2,600 years ago.  God directed the prophet Jeremiah to go down to the potter's house for a teaching lesson. Jeremiah obeyed God's directive and learned a powerful lesson that is now part of the Holy Scriptures.

I expect God to teach me in the mundane experiences of life and He will if my eyes and ears are attentive to His instruction.  The Master Teacher used the ocean, birds, fields, house construction, and even little children to teach lasting lessons in life.  In fact we often use observations in nature and everyday life as a basis for these daily encouragements.

Our first daily text expresses an attitude of submission to the Master Potter, "O LORD, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand" (Isaiah 64:8).  God has not changed and Isaiah's statement is directed to each of us as well. Many a songwriter has made this connection. Perhaps most famously are these words from the classic hymn, "Have Thine Own Way" which serves as a our message title,

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.

After Jeremiah observed the potter at work God taught him two great truths we do well to remember: "God has authority and power to form and fashion kingdoms and nations as He pleases. He may dispose of us as He thinks fit; and it would be as absurd for us to dispute this, as for the clay to quarrel with the potter. But He always goes by fixed rules of justice and goodness. When God is coming against us in judgments, we may be sure it is for our sins; but sincere conversion from the evil of sin will prevent the evil of punishment, as to persons, and to families, and nations" (Matthew Henry).

God, the Master Potter, providentially shapes our will as we submit to His caring hands.   At times the Potter's pace may seem slow and we  grow impatient at the progress.  Occasionally the actions of the Master Potter may not make sense to us.  We may squirm or even complain, considering the Potter to be quite abrupt in His actions.  It may be painful to us and we may even think we know better!

And yet a deep settled peace and assurance comes to those of us who wholeheartedly place ourselves in the caring hands of the Master Potter.  "You are the Potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me, this is what I pray."

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer:  Father, too often my heart becomes hard, unpliable, and unmoved because of my stubborn will or due to my own ignorance.  My pride convinces me that I know best and I become reckless along the way.  I want to trust You as the Master Potter when You break my will to remove my imperfections.  Though it is a painful, humbling and deliberate process I invite You to realign my heart's desires and reshape my will according to Your purpose.  As I go through this purifying process help me to stand firm during the testing periods of my life.  I want to be a vessel of honor that brings glory to You.  In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

Note from Brooksyne:  When I was a child growing up in Tulsa we lived about three miles from Frankoma Pottery in Sapulpa, OK.  I was spellbound as I watched the potters at work.  I remember from my childhood experiences and our visits to Sturbridge Village in New England that the potter often took a piece of clay that he had formed into a lovely vase or pitcher and would suddenly crush it with his hands.  He'd put it back on the wheel and start all over again.  Though the untrained eye could not detect a defect in the work the Master Potter knew it was there and would reshape the vessel so that the quality was pleasing to him.  It's a wonderful analogy of what Christ does when He saves us and applies His sanctifying work all along the way.

Here are four truths concerning the Master Potter:
1) The Master Potter is always in control.
2) The Master Potter is "hands on" (genuine pottery products are not mass-produced).
3) The Master Potter takes time and changes His work a number of times in ways that can be mysterious to the observer as he works on the finished product. As living pottery, changes in our lives can be mysterious to us also!
4) The Master Potter has the ultimate good in mind for His work.
