"The Ultimate Family Reunion"   "For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18). Many of us have family reunions. Some families live relatively close so they see each other frequently. Here in Lancaster County we meet a lot of people who live close to where they were raised and a number of people still live in the very house they were raised in. The sense of distance is quite relative. I live in the Mount Joy area and once asked someone if they were from around here. They replied "Oh no, I'm from Manheim", which happens to be a small town only about six miles away! But I suppose from his perspective he was not from "around here". But in our family we're spread all around the country from coast to coast and border to border and some overseas. Since we don't see each other regularly a family reunion is a very special time for us. This summer we will meet in Gatlinburg, Tennessee near the Great Smokies National Park for our annual Steincross reunion. We've been doing this since 1975. Prior to that we just gathered at my grandparents little white frame house in Harwood, Missouri (with a two seater outhouse that was still in operation). We never actually called it a reunion back then as I recall; the family just got together. But when my grandparents died the next generation (their children) began an intentional effort to stay connected. Now that entire generation has passed away (my mom and her six siblings) but we cousins still meet annually. We will meet over a long weekend and then say farewell. Earthly reunions all end that way don't they? Our daily text speaks of a great family reunion unlike any other. Indeed it will be the ultimate reunion and will include several notable, distinct features, unlike any family reunion held here on earth: It will include all who have lived for Christ (believers). Some have been missed at other reunions I've attended. At these reunions some had already gone to be with the Lord. Others couldn't make it. There will be no transportation problems getting to this reunion. No one will miss because they had to work. Sickness or disabilities won't hinder. No one will be limited by cost. Our "family" will be greatly expanded. Those who followed Christ will be there from every tribe and language and people and nation. The redeemed from all the ages will be at this reunion. Our common bloodline will be the divine, redeeming blood of Jesus Christ!  We expect to finally get to meet many of you we have only connected with through email or on the web. We'll meet the ones contacting us from closed countries who experience real persecution. It will be in the loveliest location. It will far, far exceed any beautiful place on this earth. Now I've been to some mighty pretty areas as the Creator sure made a masterpiece on this earth. But this reunion will be in heaven.  We will be with Christ. Theologian R.C. Sproul writes, "Eternal life for the individual is not an empty human aspiration built on myth, but an assurance promised us by Christ Himself. His own triumph over the grave is the church’s hope for our participation in His life." This reunion will be forever. No more tearful hugs of departure. No more, "See you next year" when that just may not be. This year at our reunion we will miss the husband of one of my cousins who passed away this winter.  No, in this ultimate reunion "we will be with the Lord forever." Notice that wonderful pronoun "we", which refers to both the dead in Christ and those who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord.  And it will include the abiding presence of the Lord. That will be the very best part. Won't it be wonderful there! So today I "encourage you with these words." Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Lord Jesus, I pray that You will capture our minds and draw our hearts to what has been prepared for us. May we with child-like anticipation keep our attention drawn to the eternal truths of Your Word.  And may these spiritual truths turn our face toward heaven. Our future home where we will enjoy a sinless atmosphere, never-ending fellowship with our brothers and sisters and the majesty of Your presence forever.  Amen. Yesterday I participated in a dirty job We had some interesting work (to me anyway) take place on the farm field across from our home. Farm work has a number of components, some a lot less appealing than others, but all important to the overall operation. Yesterday they applied the plentiful soil enhancement known as organic fertilizer (AKA manure) using a method I had never seen before. For the inquisitive more photos and descriptions are here. "Considering Others" "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves" (Philippians 2:3).   Our travels take us through some beautiful and interesting areas which we often share in our photos. We drive through covered bridges, such as the Schenk's Mill bridge seen above, pass colorful flower stands and observe the many interesting distinctives of the Amish culture. The other day we passed an Amish one room schoolhouse with a large tour bus parked beside it.  We were observing the senior tourists who were walking out of the school heading back to the bus, and then we noticed the children that were lined up along the windows.  They were waving to their visitors, likely pleased to have some special guests that day!   Covered bridges are usually one lane (although last year we went through one in Indiana that was two lanes entering into a large state park). Once I approached a covered bridge here in Lancaster County and just as I was preparing to enter another car approached from the opposite side.  With no means to communicate, we both backed up to yield and waited for the other to proceed. Finally I passed through as it was evident that the other driver was insisting on being the more considerate one! I rolled down my window as I passed, waved and mouthed "Thank You" as he smiled and responded, "You're welcome". It occurred to me that this is a small microcosm of what our attitudes should be toward one another. However there is plenty of inconsideration to report as well. In my illustration files is a front page story from the Lancaster New Era several years ago about a problem with noise in the city. It began: A Lancaster police officer was on patrol one hot April day when he approached a Jeep Grand Cherokee. He reported: "We could hear the bass a block away. It wasn't hard to find the vehicle. But no one was in the car. So we were going to take the keys." As they were doing so a man in his 20's walked out of a barbershop across the intersection and told the officers, "I was listening to my music while I got my hair cut."  He, along with everyone else, like it or not! The golden rule as stated by our Lord is "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (Luke 6:31).  Consideration is the practice of the golden rule in the small details of life; beginning in the home and extending to all relationships. What if the billions of personal interactions that take place all over the globe today were truly characterized by this rule? Well, that would certainly bring about world peace but in reality that just isn't going to happen until the return of the Prince of Peace. I like the way Oswald Chambers describes the working of the Holy Spirit in our hearts as we mature in the faith:  "We don't deliberately set the statements of Jesus before us as our standards, but when His Spirit is having His way with us, we live acording to His standard without even realizing it.  The nature of God in us is discerned when we have been through it and it is in our past." By God's transforming grace you and I can do something in our little corner of the world. Today in your speech, in your body language, and in your actions keep this attitude foremost in your heart: "In humility consider others better than yourselves."  When you do so, the Golden Rule will play itself out in your actions without your even giving conscious thought to it.  Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, in our human nature we want the best seat, the first choice, the biggest piece, to be first in line, and on and on it goes.  The desire to serve self before serving others is an ongoing battle.  Thank you for those who walk in humility, giving preference to others, rather than choosing to please themselves first.  They serve as human examples of the attitude Jesus exemplified when He, being in Your very nature did not consider equality with You something to hold onto.  Instead Jesus took on the very nature of a servant and became God in the flesh.  In His human role He showed us the greatest example of humility as He related to people from day to day and ultimately when He laid down His life for us. We're thankful for Jesus and His greatest act of humility.  It is in His name that we pray. Amen. (See Philippians 2:5-8 for Scripture basis of prayer) For Further Thought:  I recall a story a pastor friend told which relates to today's topic. It took place in Germany during the Cold War.  East Berlin was Communist controlled and West Berlin was a free country.  One day some people in East Berlin took a truckload of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side.  The people of West Berlin could have done the same thing. But instead they took a truckload of canned goods, bread, and milk . . . and neatly stacked it on the East Berlin side.  On top of this stack they placed the sign: "EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS."  (Wow, was that a subtle yet powerful message!) Brooksyne's Recollection: Today's message takes me back to a time about 25 years ago when I was in a terrible hurry at the "Bi-Lo" supermarket in St. Marys, PA.  I needed to pick up only a couple of items for a Christmas dinner on a Wednesday evening so I thought I could make a quick stop on the way.  I was in charge so I needed to arrive before others got there. I parked in the closest parking spot and ran into the store.  I quickly got a cart and hurriedly steered my way through the aisles (when I use the word, "steered" it's the kind of steering that leads even the biggest man to scurry out of my path - they see the large cart, my intense look and rapid footwork).  I was making good time until I got into a traffic jam with shoppers in an aisle that blocked me both ways, kind of like a freeway when you can't turn your car around and you can't inch forward either.  It was so slow I felt like I was crawling.  My anxiety grew and my frustration worsened making the situation far worse than it really was. Seconds seemed like minutes.  I could see ahead that it was two "old women" and I was only about 30 years old at the time, so I had no time for being thoughtful about the aging situation.  FINALLY, I was able to pass these very slow shoppers and decided to look back to figure out why they were so terribly slow. You can imagine how utterly humiliated I was when I realized that the one woman holding onto the shopping cart was blind.  The other lady was guiding the cart as she loaded items for the blind woman.  It is an experience that I will never forget in feeling that my time was more important than anyone else shopping in the store. Two-lane covered bridge in Brown County, Indiana This is the only two-lane covered bridge I've ever seen! It is at the entrance to Brown County State Park in southern Indiana. In the message we shared about passing an Amish school with a tourist bus. The Amish are generally quite reticent opening their schools to outsiders, especially tourists. However we found out that they do on occasion allow outsiders such as a tour bus! Last Spring we were invited to an authentic Amish School where the children of some friends of ours attend and we served them lunch. It was quite an experience and we tell the story here. "Open My Eyes That I May See" "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints and His incomparably great power for us who believe" (Ephesians 1:18,19). Today we would like to write about spiritual enlightenment. One of the great aspects of our conversion is the reality of being spiritually enlightened. In the classic hymn "Amazing Grace" John Newton describes his spiritual enlightenment with the words, "I once was blind, but now I see." Spiritual blindness is a condition of the unbeliever. The apostle Paul wrote, "The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (2 Corinthians 4:4). However the unbeliever may very well not sense in any way that their minds are blinded. On the contrary they may feel they are the ones enlightened. Those who hold an entirely different worldview and faith outlook  speak of being "enlightened". In fact they would see me as backward, ignorant and unenlightened. So the issue is not whether we have been enlightened but rather what we've been enlightened to and who is our source for enlightenment! Many years ago a pastor friend used the term "spiritual cataracts" to describe a condition that believers also need to be mindful of.  Because of the blinding impact of sin we need continual enlightenment by the Spirit and the Word of God. In the daily portion of Scripture the apostle Paul is expressing a powerful prayer for the Ephesian believers.  It provides a great model of how we should pray for one another with our focus on the spiritual realm. Paul used a very interesting metaphor here in his prayer when he wrote about the "eyes of the heart" being enlightened. That is precisely what we need, for God to open our hearts to His truth. The eyes of our hearts being enlightened results in our knowledge of three powerful truths that bring great assurance: The hope to which He has called us. The riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints. His incomparably great power. Who are the ultimate recipients of this prayer?  Certainly the Ephesian believers were the initial recipients. But the final phrase rings loud in my heart today many centuries later.  These glorious truths are "for us who believe."  I do "believe" today and desire that the eyes of my heart be continually enlightened to receive spiritual truths from God and that is also my prayer for every reader! Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, Open the eyes of my heart; I want to see You, I want to see You. Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, Open the eyes of my heart; I want to see You, I want to see You. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, Your creation has unlimited visual stimuli that is seen by our eyes today, but according to Scripture even our heart and our mind can see.  Many philosophies and principles come to us through our mind, but we want the eyes of our heart to embrace only that which will keep our hearts pure.  May the eyes of our heart reject teachings that are inconsistent with our spiritual enlightenment. Help us to sharpen and narrow our heart's vision to escape the broad way that leads to destruction.  Keep our eyes open to the good things You want to reveal and shut our eyes to the "god of this age" whose goal it is to lead us to spiritual poverty and death.  In Your name, Jesus, we pray.  Amen. Brooksyne's Note: We are aware that there are a number of you receiving the Daily Encouragement who are physically blind. But I rejoice with you that you are not spiritually blind. You have been spiritually enlightened to the good things of the Lord and are an inspiration to all of us. We especially consider Charlie and Rosie Goumas, friends from Boston, whom we met at a conference years ago. With their sense of sight impaired or nonexistent they have nurtured their other four senses to compensate for their vision loss.  Before we moved from New England in early 2001 they took the train and came to visit us in our home in Taunton Massachusetts. Rosie is a concert pianist. Stephen sharing a hymnbook with Ruth (who is 96 years old) as the residents sang "Standing on the Promises". Yesterday we attended the Sunday chapel service at Longwood Manor which is a spiritually high point for residents who love to worship God with fellow believers.  We so appreciate the intergenerational tie that hymns provide.  Ruth is 40 years older but the the same songs of their faith is enjoyed by multiple generations.
