Nebraska Amish buggy on Rt. 45, Centre County, PA 9/3/11
Saturday afternoon we came upon this distinct buggy representing a member of the "Nebraska" Amish on Rt 45 east of State College PA. Note the blue kerosene lanterns on each side of the buggy. This group does not use batteries on their buggies.

"A Laboring Man"

"The sleep of a laboring man is sweet" (Ecclesiastes 5:12). "Then man goes out to his work, to his labor until evening. How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures" (Psalm 104:23,24).

Today is "Labor Day" here in the United States.  It's a rainy day where we live and I am sure this is somewhat disappointing to those who planned picnics and so forth but we are blessed.

I don't know whether other countries have holidays similar to Labor Day. For most Americans it's just another long three-day weekend and the unofficial end of summer.  But over the years in my ministry I've seen it as a good time to examine what the Bible says about labor and I usually preach a sermon on that theme the Sunday before Labor Day. In fact I did so yesterday and the abbreviated sermon outline is posted below this message.

Labor day parade float Some 30 years ago when we were establishing a new congregation in northern Pennsylvania we looked for creative ways to have a witness for Christ and promote our young church. Bennetts Valley, a string of small towns in a narrow valley near us, always had a parade on Labor Day and we sought to get a witness for the Lord by participating in the parade.

We developed the theme of the day and based it on Scripture. So we pulled a trailer behind our church van and set it up like a working man's bedroom. Ken Ginther, a great big lumbering man in our church, volunteered to lay on the bed pretending to be sleeping. His work boots and other evidence of a laboring man were next to the bed. We had a tape player playing his loud snoring and a big banner on each side of the float declaring, "The sleep of a laboring man is sweet." I am sure that this was the most unusual float that Bennetts Valley parade ever had to this day!

There's just no sleep as sound as the sleep following a hard day of work. I particularly recall those times in my life when I did hard physical labor such as farm work during my college years and later several elements of construction. There's indeed a special sweetness to the sleep that follows physically hard labor or a day of great productivity.

Today you may be off work and perhaps you've given little thought to labor but I hope you thank God for your job including the
hard work. I believe that's one way we please and honor God!  We also consider those who are trying to find work and consider the stress and worry that results from such an experience.

Psalm 104 recounts God's works in the natural world, showing His providential care over all His creation. I find it interesting that the picture of man in this account is at work. Some see work as a curse or a necessary evil. But God has ordained work into His created order. God said "six days shalt thou work." Solomon said, "the sleep of a laboring man is sweet" and Paul said (in a context concerning secular work) "serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men." In the book of Revelation we read of a future time when the faithful "will rest from their labor."

I pray that each of us will work diligently at whatever tasks God has called us to do as an expression of our faith, obedience, and gratitude.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man
Daily prayer: Father, we thank You for the privilege of working with our hands and engaging our minds. Work is ordained by you and carried out in our homes and places of employment. Help us to make a positive difference as we live out our Christian testimony while diligently performing our work duties. There is no perfect workplace, yet we as people who seek to honor You, will be able to deal with less than ideal circumstances as we do our work primarily for You, knowing that it is from You that we receive the reward You grant to those who are diligent and faithful.  Amen.

Among the outstanding sins of our day is the desecration of the Lord's Day and the deterioration of the Bible work ethic:

1) God has ordained work. Prior to the fall God commanded Adam to "tend the garden" Genesis 2:15. Explicitly commanded in the 4th commandment "six days shalt thou work."
Labor is modeled and is foundational all through Scripture.

2)  Our work matters
Consider the moral benefit (outcome) of your work. How does your work benefit the good of society?
Biblical example: David watching sheep, Peter as a fisherman
Modern examples: Machine part that goes into life-saving medical device, mechanical repair

Categories of work:

  • Sacred
  • Morally helpful
  • Morally neutral
  • Morally destructive
The Christian work ethic essentially asserts that all work is noble that is morally beneficial

3)  We are to work heartily as unto the Lord (includes secular work).
Colossians 3:22-24 "Heartily" surely include characteristics such as: diligent, resourceful, honorable and so forth.

4) Our work environment is one of our mission and discipling fields.
Example in Scripture Acts 18:2-4
Modern example: Compassion shown

In last Friday's message we shared about the auto accident Brooksyne had last Thursday. A car hit our van from behind and due to the age and mileage of our van may have done enough damage to total it. Due to it being Labor Day here in the US this will not be determined for several days. However, thankfully no one was seriously injured.

Ester's big day:  By this afternoon Ester will begin a new spiritual journey as she takes up residency with New Life for Girls.  NLFG seeks to help young girls to rid themselves of destructive behavior and live according to the Bible. Many of the residents have drug and alcohol addictions and are set free through the power of Christ. We're very thankful that Ester has not dealt with these issues but has for the past few years struggled with some behavioral matters that have been a great struggle for her (us, as well). NLFG will be helpful in assisting Ester to deal with these matters.  She will be in an intense Bible program for the next year and will receive a great deal of time one on one with godly counselors.

She was initially reluctant, but eventually realized that she needed the help they provide. We had several times of special prayer yesterday; at the church and in our home as friends stopped by to say their farewells. We've included a couple photos of two couples who stopped by to express their support and goodwill toward her venture. We're getting the first feel of ENS (empty nest syndrome) and so we're experiencing some mixed emotions, (tears falling even as I (Brooksyne) write, but remain very hopeful that this chapter in Ester's life will prove to be a great one. She will be in Lancaster city at the induction center for the next few months, later moving to York County (the county west of us) to a larger 80 bed residential dorm.  We are very thankful we could find local support due to her serious health matters.  No change of doctors or, if needed, hospitals. We can continue to oversee her medical matters - that was very important for our peace of mind.  We welcome your prayers for her growth in this big step she is taking.

Ester with Gambinis 9/4/11
Jim and Wendy Gambini, two of Ester's dear friends, who've encouraged her along the way! Jim was our pastor when we first moved to Lancaster County over 10 years ago.

Ester with Bunny and Peg 9/4/11
Bunny & Peg O'Hare who first met Ester when she was 11 years old.  At that time we were all living in New England.  Ten years ago we moved to Mount Joy, several years later the O'Hares moved here as well to serve with Transport for Christ.  They've been great encouragers to Ester through the years.

Ester with JoPa 9/3/11We had a great time at the Penn State football game last Saturday! I had not been to a Penn State game for over 30 years (which happened to be a notable memory for another reason). This was a first for Ester. (Brooksyne is not much of a football fan so she stayed home and got some much needed work done.) We sat next to the student section but no one confused me for being a student! It was really loud especially in the beginning. (The stadium holds over 100,000 and seemed to be pretty full).  Penn State scored on the opening kickoff and the game was pretty mismatched with the other team not even scoring till the very end.

I suppose after watching the game live I realize how accustomed I am to TV with close-up shots and replays but the atmosphere was very interesting and exciting especially since our team won. It was also interesting getting there a bit early and staying a bit after the game meandering through the area with mobs of people. It was a very hot sunny day and I wish I had a nickel for every discarded water bottle as we left the mostly empty stadium!

I took Ester's photo with this statue of longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno. He started coaching in 1966 and is still doing so although he was in an air conditioned booth looking down! He is 84 years old!  Mike Stillman, who provided the tickets, played under Coach Joe in the eighties and testifies to what a caring individual he is. I especially like the way he refers to the other team with generosity.

Nittany Lion mascot 9/3/11
Ester joined the rambuctious students in hoisting the Nittany Lion team mascot from the field level to the very top row at the end of the game as he laid on his back and students passed him up.

Butterfly on sunflower
Brooksyne took this photo in our backyard.
Butterflies are drawn to the sunflowers! This year we've been feeding butterflies with scrap orange sections, watermelon and cantaloupe.
They along with moths thoroughly enjoy the fruit.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.  Please Note: Due to our busyness and a rather stressful day (see below message) the podcast will not be available for this message. This also accounts for why the message is so late!

"Be Reconciled To God"

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

Church sign Today's message is prompted by a church sign about a mile from our home. This church posts the title of the coming Sunday's message (which I  like to see). However, due to the title and the particular way it's worded it ends up having a possibly unintended meaning. It states:

This Sunday
"Be Reconciled To God"

Well, one could read it and see it as a challenge to get reconciled with God this coming Sunday. Perhaps some would even think they have to wait! Since I first saw the message posted on Wednesday I suppose that means I would need to wait till Sunday to take care of my most important issue in life but of course this is not the case, and was not the intention of the church either!

The phrases "good news" and "great news" are often spoken in our vocabulary. These phrases will be used millions of times today among those who speak English. Ester uses it a lot. For instance, "Daddy, I have good news, I'm going to Dutch Wonderland with a friend." And I use these phrases as well to describe pleasant events in my life, as do many of you. I just wonder how many times today these phrases will be used to describe the really, truly good news, which indeed is great news, exceedingly great news.

Today's text is a summary of the Good News; the glorious truth that reconciliation with God is freely available. A simple definition of reconciliation is the act of "bringing back together." Anyone separated from God due to sin in their lives can be brought back to Him through reconciliation.  And you don't have to wait for Sunday or go to particular church to reconcile with God!

I shared a lengthy Scripture portion at the beginning of today's encouragement. I regrettably find a tendency in my life to skim over or perhaps even skip a familiar Scripture  when I read an article or a devotional such as those found in the popular "Our Daily Bread" booklet. Perhaps I unconsciously reason that I already know this Scripture before, but have not read the words of the writer before. God often convicts me of this. His Word is infinitely of more importance than any of man's thoughts.

I like Matthew Henry's thoughts regarding the act of God reconciling man to Himself:  "He beseeches sinners to lay aside their enmity, and accept of the terms He offers, that they would be reconciled to Him, to all His attributes, to all His laws, and to all his providences, to believe in the Mediator, to accept the atonement, and comply with His gospel, in all the parts of it and in the whole design of it."

May I encourage you to scroll up the page and read that Scripture portion again, slowly, meaningfully and aloud if possible. Hear the glorious call: Be reconciled to God! Then rejoice in the news that is truly great and pray for opportunities to share it with others!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man
Daily prayer: Father, it is because of the great love of Your Son, Jesus, and His willingness to take our sins upon Himself that we are reconciled to You. It is truly amazing and the greatest news of all time for all generations.  Father, we want to be passionate as Christ's ambassadors since You are making Your appeal through us reaching out to others with the greatest message of all time:  "Be reconciled to God."  When we were lost, broken, and without hope Christ reconciled us to You who sought us, repaired our broken lives, and gave us eternal hope.  Where would we be without Jesus!  Thank You for receiving us, redeeming us, and reconciling us to Yourself.  Amen.

The Unexpected:

We, as a family, have been counting our blessings since yesterday about noontime.  I'll let Brooksyne tell the story:

Stephen, Ester and I were traveling east in the van on Route 23 in Leola.  I dropped Stephen off at a supermarket and was headed to Comfort Inn in New Holland where I serve as chaplain. (Ester was to be dropped off later to meet up with a friend.)

I headed east and got caught up in a line of traffic (very common for Route 23 since there are many tourists at this time of year).  As the traffic slowed, so did I. Like many of you, I looked in my rear view mirror to make sure the person behind me was slowing as well. I was startled as I viewed a car coming behind me with way too much speed.  I thought to myself, he's traveling too fast and will not be able to stop in time. Within seconds his Ford Fusion slammed into the rear of our van.  Before I had time to process the "hit" I realized I was now in the westbound lane and was facing oncoming traffic.  There was no traffic tie up in the westbound lane and a black jeep Cherokee traveling at probably 30 to 35 MPH was headed straight toward me (or she would properly say I was straight in her path.)  All I could do was call out, "God!" and lickety split she swerved to her right and headed for a yard.  Traffic halted allowing me to drive the van out of the opposing lane. I parked it in a driveway and got out to assess the damage.  In less than five minutes a state trooper, fire truck, and ambulance arrived (it must have been neighbors who called). So many people appeared from every direction.

The Damage:

Ester's seat had unfastened sending her to the back of the van (we had removed the back bench seat weeks ago).  She hit her head and had some bruising.  Due to her health history and being on a blood thinner she needed to be checked out at the hospital. All the tests turned out negative for which we are thankful. I was not injured at all.

The man who hit us was not hurt but his 2008 Ford Fusion was possibly totalled.  The young woman, whom I believe God sent angels to steer her jeep out of harm's way, was not injured.  She had two small children who were not harmed either.

About five minutes after the accident the van began to send out a lot of smoke (steam) under the hood.  The firemen were standing by and ready to dowse the engine fire but it was related to the radiator. The van overheated and will need mechanical repair as well.

Visibly the damage isn't that bad and thankfully the man who hit us had insurance and the van has already been towed in for repairs. Because the driver, who hit Brooksyne, was trying to pull right of the van to avoid hitting her it forced the van to veer into the westbound lane rather than the car in front of her.  It could have been extremely serious, or potentially fatal had they collided head-on with the Cherokee.

The man, about 40 years old, repeatedly apologized.  When I gave him my business card he saw that I was a chaplain. He appeared to be excited and commented "You're Pastors?" I responded, "You're a man of God, aren't you?" "Yes I am, I sure am!" he said. He was on his way to apply for a job at Shady Maple. So we have taken up his need to find work in our prayers.

Van accident damage
Update: The van was hauled to the body shop today and the appraiser was pretty sure the insurance company would total the van due to the age (1999) and mileage on the van with the repair costing more than the van is worth according to some formula. However this amount would not replace the van with one that is similar. This is a bit disconcerting and discouraging to us since we had maintained the van very well and had hoped to get several more years out of it. What's more the 2012 van we have as a rental is actually not as large. So we will wait till next week for the final word on this matter.

After the entire mess was cleaned up and emergency workers left (about 40 minutes) I went to the other side of the very busy highway, parked the car, and took this photo.  I visited with the young woman who drove the Cherokee and gave her a big hug. She showed me how she drove her jeep from the road into this yard and steered it between this telephone pole and the guy wire. All who looked on were amazed at  how the only damage was the right mirror broken off by the guy wire. The tracks are barely visible but if you look closely you might be able to see how close she was to the wire. Indicating how close she was to our van there is a mark where her left side mirror hit our van.

Farewell van!
A sad sight to see our van hauled away. We've had it for over 7 years (It's a '99 model and we purchsed it used in 2004) and it's been a great vehicle.  Brooksyne pointed out the irony of the "NEED ENCOURAGEMENT?" sticker on our van as it's followed by someone on the way to the repair shop this afternoon!

The blessing of friends!

Yesterday
following the accident we stopped by Mike and Michelle Stillman's house. Michelle drove Brooksyne to the Lancaster General Hospital ER where Ester had been transported via ambulance. I drove the still operable van home since it was overheating and wanted to stay on the highway to get it home.

During the 1982 season Mike played for Penn State as the longsnapper on the NCAA National championship team. He offered me two tickets to this Saturday's Penn State game so we picked them up and then they showed us their large litter of 11 Yellow Lab pups, just over two weeks old.  This was Daisy's first litter...I wonder how many she'll have the next time!

Mini-basket flower arrangement
Brooksyne arranges these mini-baskets and this fall arrangement brightened our window sill with the crimson and golden colors.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"How Long, O Lord, How Long?"

"My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?" (
Psalm 6:3). "How long must your servant wait?" (Psalm 119:84). "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Today we consider many of our brothers and sisters who are in a waiting period. As we scan back over our ministry in churches we served to our present role in chaplaincy and pastoring we call to mind several who taught us a great deal about waiting. At the present, one individual comes to mind who has been enduring a long, arduous wait year after year after year and yet she still has no clue as to how God is going to work out the matter. And yet I can hear her say, "God is good all the time and all the time God is good."  (This is a great saying that we used to repeat about ten times on Sundays, for quite a while!  It still puts a smile on my face.)

Some twenty-two times (depending on version) the Psalmist asks the Lord, "How long?"  But in each instance he never received a specific answer. That's the way many issues in life are. We have an assurance, a promise from God that it will ultimately work out, but we just don't know when.

Today many of us are crying out, "How long, O Lord." We see before our very eyes the creation groaning as in the pains of childbirth (see Romans 8:22). Wars, hatred, deceptions, frailty; all are reminders of the fallen world we live in. You see for me the "how long" deals not only with conflict all throughout the world but also the specific conflict that I am personally dealing with.

Let us consider also the bigger picture in the cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil; between the one true triune God and the ancient enemy who has opposed Him. In regard to this battle may we have a deep, abiding assurance that we are on the winning side and one glorious day, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever" (Revelation 11:15).

But for now the wait remains. On the personal level it may be a vexing job situation or a frustrated search for work.  It may be a chronic illness or the pain from the loss of a loved one. For others there's what seems like endless family strife. We want an answer to the "how long" question, but so very often we don't get it.

Paul also had a "How long" experience. He was troubled by a "thorn in the flesh" and had cried out to God for healing and deliverance.  His specific prayer was not answered as Paul had hoped, but God did speak to him.  That answer has brought hope and strength to millions over the years while they've waited.  I pray that it will also encourage fellow waiters today. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man
Daily prayer: Father, we find direction and sufficient grace as we follow Psalm 27:14: "Wait on the Lord; be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart: wait, I say on the Lord." The Psalmist tells us twice in the same sentence to wait on You. We're not to doubt, be despondent or give up in despair, but instead we are to go forward in faith, trusting You completely, since "no eye has seen, and no ear has heard what the Lord has in store for those who wait for Him." Help us to endure the wait and enjoy our faith walk with You. Amen.

* In yesterday's message on anger we left point three blank since we were unable to determine a suitable word to describe the concept we wanted and invited readers to make suggestions.

3) "And do not give the devil a foothold" This indicates there are to be self-imposed constraints on the _____ of anger.

Readers suggested the following:
exhibition, outward demonstration, danger, triggers, rootedness, complicity, pursuit, intent

Joe, a preacher friend, elaborates: In response to the concept about not giving the devil a foothold as it relates to anger, one possibility would be, "...there are to be self-imposed constraints on the triggers of our anger." That is easier said than done, but 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ, and the previous verse reminds us that we have a divine arsenal to help destroy our mental strongholds. There are things, of course, which should get us "fired up," like human injustice.

"Thou O Lord"  Video  Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir

"Your Grace Is Sufficient For Me"  Video  Marty Nystrom  I also like this acoustical version

"His Grace Is Sufficient"  Video  The Renaissance  (I suppose this is similar to how we looked like when we were young!!!)

"Everlasting God"  Video  Chris Tomlin  "Strength Will Rise As We Wait Upon The Lord"

"Wait On The Lord"  Video  The Martins   This is a simple chorus well worth memorizing since it's word for word Scripture (Psalm 27:14 mentioned in the prayer).  Ester and I (Brooksyne) have sung this many times at nursing home settings or hospitals while visiting ill patients.  It speaks great peace to my heart.  (I also enjoy the Martins harmony.)

"God Is Good All The Time"  Video  Don Moen  I remember playing and leading this song often and the joyous expressions I could see on people's faces in the congregation.

"Glorious Day"  Video  Casting Crowns  (Also known as "One Day")
