Brooksyne arranged a bowl of real Granny Smith & Red Delicious Apples in her Paul Revere Silver Bowl.  I added the "golden" apples! Listen to this message on your audio player. "Fitly Spoken Words" "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures (settings) of silver" (Proverbs 25:11). "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). When I graduated from Truman High School in Independence Missouri I received a book called "Apples of Gold", a popular book given to graduates at that time. Brooksyne received one as well but can't remember the occasion. We wouldn't be surprised if other readers from our generation may recall the same book. It's a collection of inspirational stories and quotes. The title is based upon our daily Scripture text. (Note: The book pictured at the left is not the book I received: A. I'm not that old. B. It's not even the same book. But I just happen to like old books!) Today we want to consider and challenge you in regard to how our fitly spoken words may be "like apples of gold in pictures of silver" or, as expressed in the New Testament words,  "helpful for building others up according to their needs, benefiting those who listen." Several years ago I attended a businessmen's breakfast meeting and heard Ed Herr speak. Ed, also a friend of mine, shared several illustrations from his own life that I believe really connected with the large audience. He recalled a very discouraging time, as a child, when his mother noticed him crying. She offered several fitly spoken words of healing wisdom that left a lasting impact on him. Many years later he had a similar opportunity to share fitly spoken words of wisdom with his own daughter during a time that she was discouraged.   In  my own life I recall some fitly spoken words in a conversation with my Dad while in Bible College. It is such a poignant memory that I can still recall the precise placement of the pay phone in the dorm lobby. I was recovering from a serious injury and my progress seemed so slow at the time. My dad was a man of few words but he had just the right words at that time for a discouraged son. I'm sure that we've all been recipients of "words fitly spoken."  The word "fitly" in the text translates a Hebrew word found only once in the entire Bible which conveys the sense of "in season."  The New American Standard Version uses the phrase, "a word spoken in right circumstances." The Amplified states, "A word fitly spoken and in due season". I am intrigued by the phrase, "apples of gold in pictures of silver". One commentary states, "a word spoken with propriety, opportunely and suitably to the occasion, is as much in its place and as conspicuously beautiful as the golden fruit which appears through the apertures of an exquisitely wrought silver basket." These are God-ordained words that go right to the heart to meet the need for that season. God often uses others to bring these words to us. I can think of many times in my life when I have received a word fitly spoken. I surely hope that I have offered many fitly spoken words as well, although I really believe we are very often unaware at the time that we have offered them. What a powerful aspect of personal ministry is offering these words to others. Who needs to hear such a word from you today? As I reflect on my own life and times when I have been the recipient of these words it occurs to me that generally they are very brief. I encourage you to reflect on times in your own life when someone has been a blessing in sharing such words with you. Seek to allow the Holy Spirit to enable you to be a dispenser of fitly spoken words! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily Prayer: Father, You know the exact number of words that will flow from my lips today; some of them meaningful while others are simply forgettable words. Would You make me sensitive to those who need caring words.  Help me to look not only to my own interests but also to the interests of others as I offer words fitly spoken to those who need to hear a word from You through a servant like me.  Amen. "The Blessing Of Home" "We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it" (2 Corinthians 5:7-9). Yesterday Brooksyne and I went to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which is similar to a State Fair in other states, but for some reason here in Pennsylvania it’s held indoors in the middle of winter! However it was a beautiful day yesterday with mild temperatures. This is a huge event with 25 acres under roof. We typically begin in the food court area where we predictably share a bowl of hot mushroom soup which is always outstanding! BTW, this food court is not like a mall food court but rather is operated by the various growing associations in Pennsylvania such as the Mushroom growers as a means of fundraising. The numerous exhibits brought to mind a display we saw at a Farm Show several years ago hosted by Bill Arnold, a dairy farmer. It also serves as a good illustration for a message prompted by a greater than usual number of responses to yesterday's message on persevering love. One reader wrote: "Your message on Jan. 10, 2012 really hit home for me. My parents celebrated 65 years of marriage on Dec. 11, 2011. They were faithful to each other and to God. There are 5 living children and 1 deceased, and lots of rough road along the way. We are all very sad today, as our Dad went to be with the Lord on Jan. 7, 2012. We are happy he is with the Lord. His life was one of faithfulness to his family and to God." Now let me take you back to Bill Arnold’s story.  He owns a dairy farm located directly over the Quecreek Mine, where nine coal miners were rescued in 2002. He was very involved in the rescue operation and shared some interesting details. The display had maps and diagrams that helped me to understand deep mining better as well as the specific rescue. The miners were waiting for rescue in an area of the mine they had cordoned off. They heard the drilling and a couple of them went to examine the operation and were able to communicate with the rescuers on the surface. A large shaft had been drilled and a special rescue capsule was being lowered to bring the miners out. When the two returned to the rest of miners one shouted, "Who wants to go home?" No persuasion was needed as all the miners jumped up and ran to the rescue area. Since this was a very publicized event, some of you will recall seeing on television the rescue capsule. One by one, with great elation, they were brought out of the mine. That was sure a day of celebration for miners, their families, their rescue workers and the rest of us who were hoping and praying! “Who wants to go home?” is a question we might ask following a long trip, a shopping expedition, or a stay at the hospital. It generally conveys a message of comfort, warmth and safety where we envision just being ourselves, relaxing and shutting out the busyness of the world. I love my home. Sure I enjoy my rural location and the house I live in, but primarily it's the family God has given me that brings warmth and acceptance to my home. That's surely what those miners were longing for as well. I can only imagine how their excitement grew as they thought about seeing and hugging their wives and children. But there's another home that we who love the Lord should all have a deep longing for. Paul refers to it in our daily text as his preference: “To be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” He's including other believers in his statement (notice the personal pronoun "we"). He says we are both confident we will be and indeed would prefer to be at home with the Lord. He's contrasting this with our present physical life where "we are at home in the body" (v. 9). Erwin Lutzer writes concerning our arrival home with the Lord, "At death we cross from one territory to another, but we'll have no trouble with visas. Our representative is already there, preparing for our arrival. As citizens of heaven, our entrance is incontestable." Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily Prayer: Father, we’re abundantly grateful for our home dwellings here on earth where we find pleasure, companionship, comfort, rest and food. If we’re not intentional, we will give more time and affection to our temporal home than our future eternal home. Perhaps it's because we're living in the here and now and the future seems so distant and unfamiliar. Help us not to fear the future nor foolishly think it will not come, but to embrace it so that we are prepared when that moment comes. May our heart's yearning, our primary focus, and our physical labors also have heavenly goals each day as we seek to live for You daily.  In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen. We have 5 children, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great. We are still very much in love and couldn't imagine it any other way. Never knowing what will prompt a response two readers also had an association with Dwight D. Eisenhower: A local pastor friend shares: Former President Ike was my 3rd. cousin.  We grew up and lived just a few miles from his grandparents farm in Elizabethville, PA. Some of his relatives are buried in my home church the Free Grace BIC Cemetery 3 miles East of Millersburg. The Free Grace Church was my home church. As a youth my grandfather James H. Keefer (Ike's 2nd cousin) talked about going down to the White House and visiting.  I regret that we never tried. Ike's family moved away from our area in Lykens Valley to Abilene, Kansas before he was born. So that is where he grew up. There was an old time minister Pastor Ray Witter (who was 1st cousin of Ike and 2nd cousin to my grandfather) who went swimming and fishing together as boys and then later was pictured in the White house visiting together.  Pastor Ray's picture was in "Life Magazine" back in the 60's I think.  God bless your ministry.  Pastor John Another pastor friend from Maine had this memory: I too can make the claim that Eisenhower was President when I was born (slightly earlier than Steve).  I was privileged to meet him about 12 or 13 years later when my dad took us out to D.C. Stadium (as it was then known - prior to it becoming RFK Stadium) to see the American League Senators play (usually an evening of comic relief).  We were sitting about 3/4 of the way down the third base line about 15 rows off the field - a great place to catch the foul balls. It was somewhat crowded as the game began, but as the Senators fell quickly behind the crowd thinned out and my mother noticed that Eisenhower was sitting about 7 rows below us and little towards home plate, surrounded by his Secret Service Contingent. About that time whoever was at the plate popped up a foul ball that came towards us and Eisenhower stood along with the rest of us seeking to catch the ball.  I ran over towards the ball and was about a row away when Eisenhower actually did catch the ball. I of course expressed disappointment in not getting it and congratulated the former President on his catch. We talked for a few seconds and I returned to my seat (somewhat even more disappointed that he had not given me the ball with an autograph). I discovered a few years later when Eisenhower was again at the stadium for a ball game that that had been his first ever foul ball catch - so I couldn't any further begrudge the fact that he hadn't given it to me. No matter how famous a person may be the reality is that they too are human and very real just like you and I.  The most effective famous ones are the one's who remember this - as Eisenhower did. Listen to this message on your audio player. "Love Always Perseveres" "It [love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails" (1 Corinthians 13:7,8). Brooksyne periodically serves as a volunteer cashier at the Mount Joy Gift and Thrift, a very nice second hand store that raises funds for missions. However she also likes to shop there. Yesterday she worked and... shopped! She came home and excitedly showed me some of her bargains, including the coffee mug seen in our top photo on the right, which also capably illustrates today's message! She was especially thrilled to find a match for the coffee mug (on the left) we had received as a Christmas gift. Brooksyne and I enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories. Several years ago we sat across from Bob and Joan at a fellowship meal who told us they had been married fifty-three years. It's very inspiring these days to know people who have an enduring marriage but this couple went on to tell us they also share the same birthday. That's really neat and rather unusual. Brooksyne and I share birthdays exactly one year and one week apart every year. So far she's not been able to catch up, which she never complains about! But this was the first time in my life I had met a married couple who celebrated their birthdays on the exact same date. I have met people who share my birthday and have a friend who was also born on October 14, 1954.  When I was born Dwight Eisenhower was president.  His birthday is on October 14 so I have a nice congratulations letter on White House stationary that someone must have requested when I was born! But as Bob and Joan shared their story it grew more intriguing as they went on to inform us that they not only share the same birthday but they were born on the very same day in the very same hospital. Since their birth records do not specify the precise time of birth they don't even know who is older! They've known each other since they were children and both recall having an "interest" in the other as youngsters. An enduring marriage requires persevering love. In over fifty years you can imagine the bumps and hard times this couple has been through. Brooksyne and I know this as we approach our thirty-sixth anniversary in several months. In my premarital discussions with young couples who are preparing for marriage I candidly share of this reality. We need a commitment to persevering love. This is expressed in loyalty, a great Scriptural virtue that's sure on the decline. Loyalty is faithfulness expressed in our relationships. It's keeping the promises we make which ultimately reveals our faithfulness to the Lord. In the daily Scripture from the "Love Chapter" we read these characteristics of love: "It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." This persevering love foundationally needs to be expressed to the Lord but is also expressed to other people; in our marriages, our children, our extended families, co-workers and friendships.  What about you today? Is loyalty and persevering love a character trait in your life?  Loyalty has been defined as "using difficult times to demonstrate my commitment to God and to those He has called me to serve."  May God give us each persevering love! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, hear our earnest prayer this day. May You, the supreme example of persevering love, help us to daily nurture persevering love in our human relationships. May we be loyal to our partners, always looking to their interests above our own. May Your grace help us to live above the fall-out that comes from inevitable trials. Enable us to overcome daily temptations as we rely on You. As we genuinely seek You we are confident that You will grant understanding, forbearance, and a persevering love that will last a lifetime until You call us to our eternal home where we will be richly and eternally rewarded. Note: We are aware that some of our readers have experienced or are even now experiencing the terrible pain of disloyalty and broken promises, particularly in marriage, but also in work relationships, church matters, and on and on it goes. May God bring His healing and peace to your hearts. Others of you have yourself been grievously disloyal at some point in your past. "Pastor Harold Harding went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, January 5th. He was surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren while they prayed together and sang hymns in his bedroom. His eldest son, Randy, said one final prayer and upon his "Amen", Pastor Harding breathed his last breath on earth and saw Jesus face to face, as the great crowd of witnesses welcomed him in."
