Note: Due to travel a podcast was not prepared for this message.* "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God" (Psalm 20:7). "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit"  (Romans 15:13).  We are accustomed to seeing horses on farms in our county since we live in an Amish and old-order Mennonite area. Many of these are work horses, pulling implements and buggies. We drove through Kentucky yesterday and saw a different type of horse scenery. The area from Lexington to Louisville has many large horse farms and, of course, it is the home of the Kentucky Derby. Years ago it was very common to hear Scripture put to a musical tune, making it rather natural and pleasurable to memorize Scripture without the added discipline of rote repetition. That's how Brooksyne and I learned today's Scripture text and I suppose some of you sang this Jewish tune as well in years past. I especially recall Freda, a very enthusiastic older lady who attended our church in northern Pennsylvania who just loved this song. (Like me, don't you have certain songs you tend to associate with people who liked them alot?) This verse is a great reminder of where our source of trust should be. At first glance, the Scripture phrase may make no sense to us in our present culture. After all, we do not put our trust in horses and chariots today. Most of us only know horses for their recreational value and they are certainly no longer a significant component in modern warfare. Although horses are a more practical and utilitarian part of Amish life than the average household, even they do not put their trust in horses. We have an Amish friend whose horse died and I recall his expression of trust in God even at the time of such financial, functional, and personal loss. The daily verse is speaking militarily, using the tactical methods common at the time it was written. Chariots and horses were a major component of military strength. Of course today's military vehicles used throughout the world far surpass the finest of chariots and horses of David's day. Yesterday we visited with my aunt and uncle and they showed me a photo of their granddaughter along with her husband and children standing in front of an F-16 since he is pilot. Much strategic planning goes into training modern warriors to utilize and rely on their machinery for defense and combat against the enemy. Their security is reliant on their machinery much like the Bible warriors depended on their chariots and horses. So many place their trust in political leaders who clamor for votes with promises they never fulfill. Candidates and political leaders can even have a messiah-like following, but hope does not come from politicians. Militarily many trust in the latest weaponry to assure us of safety and security, but really, nothing leaders do can protect us from evil people intent on bringing terror. Economically many trust in the status of their bank account or latest report from Wall Street or the Commerce Department, but real financial security is a pipe dream. Medically it may be the latest wonder drug or medical procedure, but we know there are many situations beyond the wisdom or control of even the very best medical care.  Our ultimate trust in all areas of life should always be in the Lord our God.  He alone is "Mighty To Save."  Yet failure to trust God is so often at the very heart of our problems. We place our trust in Jesus to be saved yet we must live daily in a trustful attitude to experience the abundant, fulfilling life He has for us. Paul prayed for the Romans, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit"  (Romans 15:13).  Are you living in trust today?  Some of you have a problem that's robbing you of the peace and joy that Christ provides. The words of a great old hymn, "Like a River Glorious" tell us how to experience God's perfect peace: "We may trust Him fully all for us to do. They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true. Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest. Finding as He promised, perfect peace and rest."  Turn your fears and doubts into absolute trust so that you may experience His abundant peace and rest today! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, the day to day circumstances in our lives are not scripted so that we know ahead of time what will unfold.  Some events will be welcomed and even applauded, but others will be perplexing and even beyond our grasp to control.  You don't expect us to have all the right answers or to fully understand all that concerns us, anymore than Job who was hard-pressed when he tried to understand his multiple losses and hardships.  You simply want us to trust You, as we hold on to Your unchanging hand, while You go before us making our crooked paths straight and extending Your right hand as we walk the steep mountains together. We have trusted You over and over throughout our lives, and today we pray for grace to trust You even more. It is in the name of Jesus that we pray. Amen. * Due to travel we are temporarily suspending the preparation of regular podcasts with each message. It is a complex set-up and very difficult and time-consuming to prepare in a hotel room. We expect to periodically prepare some messages as podcasts while on the road and resume regular podcasts when we return home. Some scenes along our journey Last night we visited with my (Stephen's) Uncle Don and Aunt Mary who live near Louisville Kentucky. Uncle Don is my dad's younger brother and resembles him alot in his expressions. We always enjoy visiting with them along with Aunt Mary's good food such as the refreshingly cool mandarin pineapple cake she mixed together from a blender. I think Brooksyne's going to want that recipe!   We usually use the PA turnpike heading west but on this journey we took I-64 through western Maryland into West Virginia. The turnpike uses tunnels through several of the mountain ridges but here we have a massive cut through a mountain. I suppose a lot of dynamite was used for this! We walked up on a trail along the cut and had a nice vista view looking back east toward the Shenandoah Valley. We've seen lots of painted cows but near Frankfort we passed this painted horse! We passed the processing plant for "Old Folks" sausage near Simpsonville, KY. They had an interesting repurposing for an old propane tank. Friday we shared this mystery photo and inquired among our readers what it might be. Many of you correctly guessed a spiral staircase. However hats off to Mel, who specified that it is a spiral staircase in a lighthouse. It is the interior winding staircase to the Bodie Island Lighthouse on the Outer Banks in North Carolina! They began harvesting yesterday and this was our 6 A.M. view today. Click here for a larger view. "One Hundred Years From Now" Listen to this message on your audio player. "Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him" (Genesis 35:29). In the early morning hours yesterday a deadly fire ravaged a house in Lancaster City, killing four and critically injuring several others. This morning as we drove by the location, now surrounded with police tape and all boarded up, we considered again how fragile life is. Tragically the house had no smoke alarms which may have prevented the deaths and injuries of all those who resided there. Nonetheless as this tragedy just happened yesterday eternity has been on my mind all morning since I consider that when these folks went to bed Wednesday night  it's quite unlikely that they expected to wake up to eternity on the other side or a hospital bed where recovery will be slow, painful and filled with grief as they process their loss of loved ones. A small church in Marietta, PA displayed a sign that asked, "Where will you be 100 years from now?" That really got me thinking.  A more familiar expression of this type is, "Where will you spend eternity?" But to me the 100 year question packs a very powerful punch. That's a measurement of time I can comprehend.  I find it helpful to look back 100 years and perhaps you can do the same in your own family timeline. Since we will be traveling in the Midwest and visiting many family members on both sides over the next couple weeks I've been doing some thinking about my immediate and extended family. I consider my mother's father, PaPa, whom I knew and loved dearly. He breathed his last when I was sixteen.  100 years ago in 1913 he was still a young man with many years of life ahead of him.  He was adventuresome, riding the rails across the west and he told all his grandchildren the story of his climbing Pike's Peak one night.  By 1908 he had settled down, married and began raising his family.  His farm was in southwest Missouri and he was also president of the small town bank in Harwood Missouri. He saw his grandchildren and great-grandchildren before passing away when he was nearly 90.  In his lifetime he read of the first manned flight by the Wright brothers and nearly seventy years later saw a man on the moon. But there came that time when PaPa, being old and full of years, was gathered to his people, and then buried on a windswept hill west of tiny Schell City, Missouri where my parents are also buried. So, where I will be 100 years from now is not some esoteric question, since I personally knew someone who lived one hundred years ago.  And many of you do as well. There are basically four different possible answers to this vital question, "Where will I be 100 years from now?": Perhaps with medical advances I will be living at 158 years of age! The secular response is that I am merely a physical entity and when I die that's it.  As a mere physical being my flesh, which is all I am will rot in the ground.  In this view there's no spirit or soul to live on and certainly no future resurrection of the body. The common dominant view held by many including those who should know better is that everyone (except the notoriously evil) goes to a very pleasant place at death. This view is based on sentiment, not Scripture and is often expressed by even the most ardent secularist at the death of a loved one. It seems to me humans have an innate sense that there is something more after death and this view basically asserts "the good in life probably always outweighs the bad and things work out all right in the end."  However this view has no basis in Scripture. That the Holy Scriptures truthfully informs of a coming judgment and two very distinct options at death depending on our response to Christ during our present lifetime. I clearly and unashamedly hold to the fourth view. Though it goes against conventional wisdom, it's not absolutely impossible that I may be alive 100 years from now. But it's most unlikely! The daily text is just a simple expression of the passing of a man (Isaac) who lived nearly 4,000 years ago. He was 180 years old and full of years. The powerful phrase "gathered to his people" is first used at the death of Abraham (Genesis 25:8) and is repeated throughout the Scriptures to the death of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:50).  One day you and I will most certainly be "gathered to our people." I want to be prepared to join the people of God throughout the ages, including those in my own generation.  I encourage each of you today to commit your life to Christ. Express your faith in His redemption plan, confess and repent of your sins, and choose this day and every day to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Be encouraged and prepared today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, daily there are questions looming; some trivial and others essential to our existence here on earth. But the most vital question we must answer in in a timely manner and in adherence to Scripture has to do with our eternal destiny. Just as the patriarchs of old lived long lives and then were buried by their children, our bodies too will return to dust, while our souls live on for eternity. We want to "be gathered to our people" who've made their pilgrimage here on earth with You as their Shepherd. We choose to commit our ways to You and follow Your commands so that our room and board is forever paid up in the great beyond where Christ sits at Your right hand. Keep us faithful till that day is fulfilled in our lives. In the precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Our repurposed window frame is starting to fill in with begonias. It's obvious that the left bag was planted a couple weeks after the right one. Hopefully it will soon catch up! Walking through our lawn we saw this baby cardinal that had apparently fallen from the nest and was unable to fly. Mom and Dad cardinal were keeping a close eye and everytime the fledgling would move swooped down to protect. This morning I visited with Keith. I told him the Clark forklift had a sentimental value to me. My only Uncle who is still living worked for Clark his entire career following his service in the Korean War era. We expect to visit Uncle Don and Aunt Mary this weekend near Louisville Kentucky. Ken, a friend at work shared this photo. Do any of our readers have any idea what it is? Listen to this message on your audio player. "Glorious Freedom, Wonderful Freedom" "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). "For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God" (Romans 8:20,21). Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom, No more in chains of sin I repine! Jesus the glorious Emancipator, Now and forever He shall be mine. July 4 is a holiday here in the USA and many are off work today as well. We are planning to have a cookout! It's "Independence Day" which is historically a time we express thanks to God for our political freedoms. Many take these freedoms for granted and may not even notice that they are systematically being diminished. We are aware that these messages are read all over the world by our fellow brothers and sisters who live under varying degrees of political freedom, some with very little. Most live in countries with relatively good freedoms. Others live in places with religious oppression and in some cases outright persecution. However we really doubt if this material reaches those living in actual slavery, although sadly millions still live under such conditions. Today we want to share about a freedom that is available to all that is infinitely greater than any political or religious freedoms we may or may not enjoy in this present life. One hundred or one thousand years into eternity I suspect for those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ; where we lived and the conditions we lived under during our brief earthly sojourn will be of little regard. Once I was bound by sin’s galling fetters, Chained like a slave, I struggled in vain; But I received a glorious freedom, When Jesus broke my fetters in twain. In John 8 Jesus confronted the Pharisees and religious leaders of His day who had challenged His authority. The encounter specifically began when Jesus asserted, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). The Pharisees challenged Jesus and the validity of His testimony and of course that has been at the heart of resistance to God's redemption plan ever since. Jesus taught that those who "hold" to His teaching are truly His disciples (v. 31).  He said to them "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32).  This especially insulted the proud Pharisees who responded, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" (v. 34). But Jesus was speaking of a slavery that impacts the entire human race; rich or poor, powerful  or weak, highly educated or unlearned, politically free or oppressed.  People from every background are slaves to sin!  Yet this is the very slavery from which Jesus came to free us: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). In Romans 8 Paul is referring to this slavery to sin and the freedom the Redeemed are able to experience as children of God. It is, indeed, a glorious, wonderful freedom! If you are a citizen of a free country don't take it for granted. Give thanks to God for this wonderful privilege and consider those who sacrificed for your freedoms. May this prompt you to pray for our brethren who do not have these freedoms. Above all give thanks to God that Jesus paid the supreme sacrifice so that we might be freed from the slavery of sin. That's something that we can all rejoice in no matter the political climate of our country.  Today, are you free indeed? Christ provides: 1) Freedom from the bondage of sin (Romans 6:18). 2) Freedom from guilt and shame (Colossians 1:21-23). 3) Freedom from fear of death (Hebrews 2:15) Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, how wonderful it is to enjoy the privileges available to those who live in a free country We give thanks for those who enlisted and served in our military, fighting for and maintaining our independence. And how glorious it is to enjoy freedom from sin, thanks to the sacrifice of Your Son Jesus, on our behalf.  Our lives, once enslaved to sin, now enjoy the freedom from that which once held us captive to Satan's bondage. We live in victory because You have set us free and we are now free indeed.  Thank You, Father, for delivering us from the domain of darkness and transferring us into the kingdom of Your Son in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins!  Amen. Yesterday in the course of our chaplain visits Dave greeted me with an extended hand (covered with grease). Dave of course was just having a good time. I give him a pat on the back rather than our usual handshake.!
