It serves as a beacon of hope to the 50,000 travelers estimated to pass by each day. "So Despised By The World" Listen to this message on your audio player. "For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ" (Philippians 3:18). "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world" (Galatians 6:14). Walker Moore is an evangelist who has set a goal of carrying an 89 pound cross to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa early next month. He shared about this in the church I attended on Sunday in Tulsa and is doing so as a witness for the Lord. The pastor spoke on "Carrying the Cross". When we departed the service each person was given a small wooden cross and encouraged to carry it as a reminder of what Christ did for us. Several years ago I saw a young man wearing a t-shirt that really caught my eye.  It patently declared "Bad Religion" with the cross in a circle and a slash through it. The anti-Christian message brought to mind a phrase from one of my favorite hymns that refers to the cross, "so despised by the world". It makes me wonder what this man's heart must be like to wear such a blasphemous shirt, indicating such a blatant despising of the Cross. Paul wrote "Many live as enemies of the cross." He apparently repeated this frequently to the Philippians ("as I have often told you before") and now he reminds them again, with tears in his eyes. Surely, as he wrote this, he recalled the years that he lived as an enemy of the cross and those who bore its message of redemption. Years later he had a difficult time in his initial ministry in Philippi where he, along with Silas, had been severely flogged, imprisoned and later run out of town. But I believe Paul's tears were based on far more than this experience. Then, as now, so many lived in opposition to God's divinely appointed means of redemption. The cross was and is despised. Many have lived as enemies of the cross of Christ throughout the two thousand years since the Lord's great sacrifice. This opposition is expressed in various ways from contrary religious systems to decadent worldliness, from astute secularists to apostate "church" leaders. In the nineties there was a "ReImaging" conference held among apostates where the cross and the blood of Christ were despised and mocked. Today, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. The hatred toward Christ and the message of the cross continues and is increasing. "But I love that old cross, where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain!"  Today join me in holding firm to the Biblical and historic Christian view of Christ and the cross of Calvary.  Let us, like the apostle Paul, declare "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world" (Galatians 6:14). Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Jesus, Your death on the cross was an act of barbaric cruelty that we would not, in any way, be physically attracted to. But we realize it was God's redemption plan for all humankind and because of that we can declare along with the hymnist that it indeed "has a wondrous attraction for me."  Because You willingly took the weight of our sins upon Yourself it provided a precious cleansing fountain, a healing stream that flows from Your saving blood providing forgiveness for our sins. Such amazing sacrifice demands my soul, my life, my all. Amen. Some scenes along our journey: We've had two very full days of travel as we head home and are now in Central Illinois. We did not post a message yesterday morning since we got in late Wednesday evening and met my cousin and her family for breakfast Thursday. On Wednesday morning we visited the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma. Brooksyne often visited this museum in the 70's since it was right off the turnpike when she drove to Springfield, MO for college. It's a museum that gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling as you learn about humorist Will Rogers who never let fame or fortune corrupt his morals. A great philanthropist, he donated his Hollywood fortune to The Salvation Army, Red Cross, and other worthy causes. We made a nostalgic trip to Harwood MO where my grandparents lived and my Mom grew up. As we drove into town these cattle were enjoying an easy fast food meal of recently harvested hay. We will share a selection of photos from this side trip next week. I am preparing it for my family to show them how Harwood looks today but will share the photo page as a link for any Daily Encouragement readers who may be interested. A trip to the KC area always includes a delicious BBQ meal, and this was no exception! Rarely can I order burnt ends except in the KC area. Yesterday we enjoyed a bountiful breakfast with my cousin Janet and her husband Tim, along with their daughter and her family. Brooksyne took this photo from a stairway. They live next to a beautiful lake in the Kansas City area and took us on a boat ride. What a delightful morning we enjoyed with these good folks. This is their cozy "beach home" located along the lake. "All-Stars Of Faith" Listen to this message on your audio player.   "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for" (Hebrews 11:1,2). Last night we watched some of the Major League Baseball All-Star game which was played at Citi Field in New York City. I've enjoyed baseball since I was a kid and have many memories such as playing firstbase in Little League Baseball. I was good at fielding but sure had a hard time hitting. I remember honing my skill of catching the flies and grounder balls while playing hour after hour in the side yard with my friend David. I also recall the family piling into the family sedan and driving into Kansas City to see the Athletics play at the old Municipal Stadium. (This was before they relocated to Oakland.) My PaPa (grandfather) carefully kept the box score as he listened intently to his favorite team, the Saint Louis Cardinals, over the radio. I, like so many boys, had dreams of someday playing in the big leagues. But out of the millions and millions of boys who have played baseball, many of them dreaming of making it to the big leagues, only 15,500 have ever seen this dream fulfilled, even for one game. (as seen in the plaque above from a 2010 photo I took at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY). Of those, only 1% are selected to be in the Hall of Fame, which is baseball's highest level of commendation at the conclusion of a career. During their playing career players aspire to be in the All-Star game. I had a very, very small chance when I was young and athletic and absolutely no chance as I have aged to either play in the All-Star game or be in Baseball's Hall of Fame! But this got me thinking about other All-Stars and another Hall Of Fame. There's another type of commendation I strive to someday receive, something far greater. In fact it's a commendation we should all strive for. Hebrews 11 is known as the "Faith Chapter" and contains a series of brief biographical sketches of men and women of faith. This is often referred to as the Hall of Fame of Faiths. The recurring expression in the chapter is the phrase "by faith" (found 22 times), which introduces each individual and the demonstration of their faith in God. Throughout the book the writer of Hebrews typically uses what is known as the hortative voice, urging and encouraging his readers with the expression "let us" or including himself with his readers using the first person plural pronoun "we" or "us". His writing style communicates to fellow believers in a small group setting and encourages them on as a fellow believer. This is also my favorite style both as a preacher, writer and listener. In this chapter the ancients are commended for their faith. Hebrews 11:3 makes a foundational faith statement, "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." Of course this foundational statement is under persistent and vicious attack by the secular modernist. But the writer of Hebrews forthrightly states, "By faith we understand…" And praise be to God it is by faith that I do understand and believe this to be true though I never saw the process of creation with my own physical eyes! Just as Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers, "that the eyes of their hearts may be enlightened" (1:18) so too our faith is nurtured and our understanding increases when our spiritual vision is not limited to just what we see or what is proven through modern science. In the section from verses 4 through 39 the pronouns change to "he" or "they" as the writer illustrates the faith the ancients were commended for. This section ends with the concluding phrase, "These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised" (Hebrews 11:39). In the very next verse the writer resumes his use of the 1st person plural with this powerful truth, "God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect" (11:40). The "us" includes "us"! We may all be all-stars of the faith. The context of the book indicates the "something better" is the incarnate ministry of Jesus Christ! Believers in the Old Testament period looked forward in faith to the promised future work of Christ in coming to this earth to make atonement for sin. Believers, since the New Testament period, look back in faith to the finished work of Christ and look forward to His return. Ultimately this is the primary basis for which we are all commended. Thanks be unto God! We take courage from these fearless heroes of our faith who remained faithful to You in this life so that they could inherit a future life with You for all eternity. We who follow You many generations later trust Jesus' promise that He returned to heaven to prepare a place for all who remain faithful. We anticipate with great joy the hour that we are joined with You to receive our commendation in the clouds of glory for all eternity. In Jesus mighty Name, Amen. Some scenes along our journey: One of many inspiring quotes we read last week at the George Washington Carver National Monument near Diamond, Missouri. What a wonderful afternoon I enjoyed with classmates, Beth, Gayle, Peggy, myself, and Lorna.  I hadn't seen these friends for forty years. We attended elementary, junior and senior high school together in addition to being from the same neighborhood. For nearly three hours we had so many laughs as we shared from our childhood perspective things we didn't say to each other when we were kids. We also shared some of the heartaches that our families have endured since we were kids and best of all the many overcomings we've experienced from these trials. Our families had different church backgrounds or no church background but each shared how they live for God today so when I wanted to pray for my classmates it was welcomed and we were one in the spirit....forty years later! (Ester took many photos and I was pleased to find this one was in the bunch!) We've been traveling quite a bit on route 66 during our trip (which routes less than a mile from the house I grew up in). After my class reunion with friends at Braums I wanted to show Ester my old "stomping grounds" including Daniel Webster High School. Just around the corner in West Tulsa was this very large Route 66 sign in the foreground of these old train cars beautifully restored. Ester gets almost as excited as her dad when she sees Route 66 or an old train. The engine pulling the TSU (Tulsa, Sapulpa, Union Railway) Last night we joined my cousin Anna Lee for dinner. She grew up in the farmhouse seen in the photo above. Today we will head toward home and plan to stop in Harwood Missouri, the tiny town my grandparents lived in and where my mom grew up. "That Old-Time Religion" Listen to this message on your audio player. This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it'" (Jeremiah 6:16). "Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints" (Jude 1:3). There are all kinds of ways of holding a church service these days even in the same local church. Many churches now have a traditional service and a contemporary service. (A large church we passed in Springfield, MO used the term "classic" for traditional). My cousin told me in the Kansas City area there is a church that has separate services for traditional, contemporary and ultra-contemporary styles of worship. This last Sunday I went to the traditional service in my cousin Anna Lee's church in Tulsa. It was mostly 55 and up as best as I could determine. One song leader led the music backed by a robed choir. We sang five hymns all related to the cross of Christ and the music was beautiful. We then went to Sunday School while a contemporary service was held in the same sanctuary. I could see from the worship folder they were going to sing four modern songs and no hymns or choir, though the pastor preaches the same message at both services. Brooksyne and Ester had gone to Arkansas for the day to visit with relatives on the Mountain and had quite a different church experience I've asked her to tell about. For readers familiar with the TV series "Duck Dynasty" Mountain Top (also called Batson)  is very similar. I attended a church that I visited occasionally with my grandparents when I was a child. I purposely chose this church because the pastor is my cousin, George Willis. Three of my aunts were present and a number of my cousins so that in itself was special. Since Stephen and I were married in 1976 we've never lived near family where we could experience the specialness of worshiping with family members. The service began with the "Booster Band" singing which caused me to reminisce about the years I sang in the booster band. In fact the songs the children sang were the very same ones I sang alongside my brother and sister back in the sixties. (The photo above shows them singing, "We will Roll-e-o and Chariot Up the Hill".) The children concluded with the song, "Into My Heart" as they knelt at the altar. Then those who had a birthday or anniversary in the past week were asked to come forward and put their offering in the little white church house and give a testimony. We also did this in our small church in Tulsa. The offering was to be the same amount as your years of life or years of marriage, such as if you turned 12 you would drop in 12 cents. Mom and Dad loved it when they went forward with Jody and me since all four of us had birthdays within days of each other in October as well as their wedding anniversary. Just to be ornery they'd drop in the white church bank slot only pennies so it took a while for us to finish (I remember it embarrassed me a bit as I got older.) Included also was the congregation singing "Happy Birthday to You, a happy birthday to you. Every day of the year may you feel Jesus near..." At the Mountain Top Church the man in our photo gave a testimony speaking of God's goodness after we sang Happy Birthday to him and a little boy who also had a birthday. Next we had the congregational singing. A woman led and any who wanted to join her on the platform went forward as we sang from the hymn book three hymns and a chorus of "Oh, How I love Jesus". That provided another remembrance from my childhood. My sister and I would join others on the platform as youngsters and later as teens because we loved to sing for the Lord, and it was extra "special" to sing up front with the song leader. Pastor George gave me opportunity to "give a word for the Lord" which I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of letting these folks know that my first remembrances of knowing that I wanted to follow Jesus not only came from my home church in Tulsa but from this mountain where my grandparents lived and served God wholeheartedly. I held my grandpa's Bible in my hand and told of the specialness I felt that my dad left his Bible to me when he died in 2000. My grandfather had left it to him when he died in 1983. George then preached a good solid message from Joshua 9 where the Gibeonites deceived the men of Israel. Following the sermon the congregation kneeled at their seats or at the altar asking God to seal His Word in their hearts. It was an old-fashioned church and I enjoyed the memories it brought to my heart but that is secondary to the much more important thing. The Full Gospel was preached and the uncompromising truths of God's Word were taught to the people who gathered. Now we may have various preferences regarding the style of worship (music). Brooksyne and I both enjoy a blended variety of hymns and newer songs. But regardless of the style of music we need to "ask for the ancient paths" in regard to holding on to God's revealed truths. To many "old-fashioned" is a dreaded term. We want to be contemporary and trendy, looking like people who are "with it" as we travel here below with our peers. To be described as "old-fashioned" would be the ultimate put-down to those who strive to be contemporary! But I believe there are many ways in which being old-fashioned is very desirable. I am unapologetically old-fashioned when it comes to holding firmly to the teachings of the Bible; the apostle's doctrine.  Many now mock the teachings of Scripture that have been held dear by earnest believers for nearly 2,000 years.  The Genesis creation account, Biblical miracles, the virgin birth, the atoning death and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ are scorned by modernists as being hopelessly old-fashioned in our enlightened age. Now, in a stunning, mocking rejection of God's establishment of the primary social unit (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4,5), we see marriage being completely redefined. The time has come when those of us who hold to the Biblical teaching concerning marriage are viewed by dominant culture as old-fashioned and unenlightened. Call us "old-fashioned", that's OK.  We take seriously the call of Jude in the second daily text to "contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints." The word translated "contend" means to "struggle for" and thank God for ministers and lay people alike who are struggling to uphold these truths. "Once for all" is also very significant. The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (Kittel) states that this "refers to the definitive nature of Christian teaching ("the faith") by which we know all that is needed for salvation and which we are thus to hold fast." This has been handed down or entrusted to us. By God's grace let us indeed hold fast to the truths of the Bible today, even if we are labeled "old-fashioned"! Help us to align ourselves with Your teaching and reject anything that would lead us to compromise or forsake that which we learn from Your Holy Manuscript, the Word of God. Change is inevitable and often inviting, but not the kind of change that would lead us to forsake the teachings of old, the lifestyle that reveals to others that we are set apart unto holiness, a people who reflect Christ living within us. Our days on earth are like grass; we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone, as though we had never been here.  In a changing world You are our unchanging holy God and Your love endures forever. You are indeed the same yesterday, today, and forever and because of that we give you our full allegiance. Amen. Churches not only have many styles of worship and singing but the names sure have gotten more creative or "daring" in our lifetime. We passed a church here in the Tulsa area called GUTS Church and wondered if it was some type of acronym, According to the website a theme of the church is "The personality of Guts Church is made clear with one simple question, "Do you have the 'Guts' to serve God?" Some scenes along our journey: The choir at Mountain Top Church where anyone who wants can come up on the platform and sing during the congregational singing. In this photo we were singing, "The Good Old Gospel Ship" which I haven't sung since my teen years but quickly recalled the words. Ester with Uncle Carroll Sherrell, my dad's youngest brother, at another church building on the mountain where we had a Sherrell Family Reunion from my father's side on Sunday afternoon. This is the church building my Grandpa built just before he died. The first service was his funeral in 1983, thus they named the church Sherrellville Church. This tree reminds us of Psalm 1 that speaks of the tree planted by the water whose leaf does not wither. Brooksyne with Jody Sherrell Jody's my youngest brother, that I love a lot and always enjoy hanging with when I come for a visit to Oklahoma and Arkansas. We had a gathering of my extended family from my mother's side (Dorsey) last night in Tulsa with 30 or more in attendance. We reminisced with many old pictures from the past. How good it is to visit with family again. My sister, Elaine, had hoped to join us from Texas, but sadly her husband is in the final stages of cancer, and requires 24/7 care. Praise God He is ready to meet His maker when the call from heaven comes. I also have an older brother, Jerry, and another sister, Margie, who died in 2007.
