"Christ's Ambassadors" We are therefore Christ's ambassadors" (2 Corinthians 5:20a) "However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace" (Acts 20:24). I have many tasks on my "To Do" list today.  We had guests last night so Brooksyne, not sure if they might visit our office, heaped my To Do stacks into a fairly neat oversized pile so as not to bring attention to the sloppy way I tend to keep my tasks within reach.  They consist of notebook size paper, post it notes, business cards, receipts, you name it!  (Truth is, she did the same with her desk, but it was a little less daunting.)  So when I entered the office this morning it felt like I was all caught up, but I know better.  I will rummage through the neat pile later today to see what needs my attention! Paul also spoke of the task that was laid out for him.  It was the task that superseded the tasks of living from day in and day out and the commitments that affected only his earthly existence.  It was the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. We are all called to be Christ's ambassadors who testify of God's grace in the good times and in the midst of devastation. Yesterday we saw two national events regarding normal people, like you and me, being thrust into the spotlight and they used it as an opportunity to witness for Christ. On Saturday Larry Thrasher, a church member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, in Yazoo City, Mississippi found refuge under the Communion Table as the fierce tornado that swept through his area heaped utter destruction  upon the entire church structure.  On Sunday as he and about 3 dozen parishioners gathered at the church, now a heap of rubble, a young person picked up a hymnal that survived the destruction.  Together they broke into song, "Till the Storm Passes By."  That story was televised and gave witness to the gospel of God's grace. The second televised event was the memorial service held for the 29 coal miners who died in West Virginia. It was another tragic occasion and yet the everlasting hope we have in Christ was presented in message, in prayer, and through song.  Brooksyne was deeply moved as she heard an unidentified woman sing acapella, "The Coal Miners Bible".   I wish we could reproduce the lyrics for you but were unable to find any information, though we're pretty sure it was written especially for this service.  It spoke of the Bible that was smudged from the coal miner as he thumbed through the pages over the years and kept it in the night stand next to the bed.  It would bring comfort and guidance to the widow as she read through the pages where verses were underlined and highlighted. We who follow Christ are called to be a witness for the God of truth, as His ambassador to this world. An ambassador is a representative of one kingdom to another.  The term that Paul uses in our daily text is one of the most descriptive in the Bible to describe the calling we have as children of God.  When Paul had his dramatic encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus he was a different man.  Fundamentally he changed allegiances and his citizenship. Peter expressed it this way: "As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God" (1 Peter 4:2). When people witness unpredictable or unavoidable tragedy they come to grips with the mortality of this life.  Likely some will be more open, but in reality some will harden even further. Our call remains the same. Several verses before our daily text Paul said, "We try to persuade men" (v. 11). Today as Christ's ambassadors may we each faithfully seek to persuade others of the truth of the Gospel! I am led to the great statement of personal mission made by the apostle Paul to the Ephesian elders in the second daily text. He powerfully models commitment to a task. He models Christ's statement concerning "Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it" (Matthew 10:39). His overarching focus in life was to "finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me." That task is simply expressed in the phrase "the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace." Today, for those who follow Christ, this remains our task. Let us each be committed to the cause that the Lord has given each of us and consider the incomparably great value and eternal worth of this task! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, whether in life or death, whether in times of rejoicing or times of enduring we make it our goal to testify to Your grace that keeps us keeping on.  It is Your grace that makes us more than conquerors in this life and assures us of heaven in the hereafter.  In our desire to bring as many with us as possible help us to sort through the menial tasks that deter or weigh us down from the greater task of witnessing to others of Your saving and keeping grace.  In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen. We had some visits in the Hershey area so decided to go up the hill to the Hotel Hershey for the first time. It's a rather pricey place but we  walked along the beautiful grounds and through the lobby area. In the foreground is Hershey Park and in the background is the factory where they make Hershey chocolate candy. The flower planters were well tended and colorful! We enjoyed looking at the variety of flowers including this unusual hybrid tulip. Brooksyne and I enjoyed relaxing out on the veranda for a few minutes! Sunday evening we had some friends over for dinner and fellowship. On the left is Rick and Rachel Caldwell and on the right is Rick Steudler with his young 92 year old mother Jeanette.  Rick's wife was with a family member who is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. "I Am Not Ashamed Of The Gospel!" "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16). There is a commercial on television getting a lot of air play lately that is sponsored by iamnotashamed.org.  It features people young and old, black and white, American and international, who joyfully proclaim, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel."  It's one of the few commercials that I don't tune out, but instead I give it my full attention from the beginning to the end.  A smile crosses my face each time I hear the Gospel proclaimed in this message, right down to hearing the Scripture reference mentioned from "Romans 1:16." As wonderful as I feel during the viewing of that commercial I am quick to acknowledge that the world has always been hostile to the truth that is in Christ Jesus. The hostility of others can contribute to feelings of embarrassment, apology, or even shame to those who espouse Christian views, if they're not well-grounded in the Scriptures. The evidence is overwhelming that this hostility is increasing as is commonly expressed in various settings and in numerous fronts. Several years ago I was talking with Bob, a pastor friend, about the modern tendency to label those in opposition to a particular view as "phobic."  For instance those of us who hold to the historic, traditional, Biblical position on morality in regard to the homosexual agenda are quickly labeled "homophobic."  More recently those, such as Franklin Graham, who have courageously addressed the issue of violence and terror as the means to a goal in the Islamic religion have been called "Islamophobic". As Bob and I conversed about this subject he concluded the real issue is that so many are "truthophobic."  I agree with his assessment as it is a true reflection of our postmodern era where truth is biased and changeable depending on the circumstances! Paul wrote to the Ephesian believers, "Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus" (Ephesians 4:21).  The "apostle's teaching", expressed in the Scriptures, form the foundation for genuine Christian discipleship. It is surely the faith delivered to the saints once for all that Jude in verse 3 instructs us to earnestly contend for. Our daily verse should be the motto of every Christian:  "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ."  As our world plunges into wickedness and now shamelessly revels in it and even promotes it, Christ's true church needs to stand firm for the Gospel.  Today, as individuals scattered around the world, let us proclaim unashamedly the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the only power of God for salvation from sin! We have a choice today.  Do we stand up for the gospel of Jesus Christ?  Or do we pursue the ever-changing philosophies and trends of our day?  We really can't do both, since trying to do so will bring about compromise, frustration, lack of effectiveness and the real possibility of falling away from the truth once for all entrusted to the saints. Joshua challenged the Israelites to make a choice: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve" (Joshua 24:15).  The people had to decide to obey the Lord God who had proven His trustworthiness or the gods of their time derived from the imaginations and philosophies of man.  I consider Joshua's challenge practically every day and his bold proclamation of faith that follows, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Let's stand up today, fellow believer, and also declare to a lost and dying world, "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes." That's why I am not ashamed of the Gospel, The Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am not afraid to be counted, But I'm willing to give my life, Now I'm ready to be all He wants me to be. Give up the wrong for the right, I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily Prayer: Father, the philosophies, trends, and mind-set of the world stands in great contrast to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Your Word tells us that those who are not for You are against You.  We can't walk on both sides of the fence so we are faced with a choice we must make; the same kind of choice Joshua gave to the Israelites thousands of years ago.  We must choose whether to follow after the gods of this world and forsake You or we must forsake the world and devote ourselves to You.  Father, I choose to follow after You; You who reconciled me to Yourself through Jesus.  You have proven Yourself trustworthy for Your promises are true.  You provide the power and presence of Your Holy Spirit to lead me and direct my every path.  Your Word illumines my every thought.  I choose You today, exclusively and eternally!  Amen. We would like to show our readers some photos of our day yesterday. Make sure and scroll down to the last photo for the best story of all! As we travelled on a beautiful Spring day the Amish brethren were out enjoying the weather as well. This little girl smiled and waved at us as we prepared to pass north of Intercourse, PA. (For new readers and those unfamilar with Lancaster County yes there really is a town by that name.)  You know you've become a local when you can ask directions w/o blushing. In our ministry as corporate chaplains we visit various worksites, greeting and expressing interest and care toward the employees. Yesterday we visited several hundred employees at five different locations. Gesenia and Sue work in the office and were glad to represent this aspect of our chaplaincy ministry. We then stopped by to see Raymond McGallicher, a 92 year old man who has been a part of the country church we serve part-time since 1937. He now lives with his son and daughter-in-law and is no longer able to attend weekly services but sure is pleased to have visitors. As we turned toward home in the late afternoon we drove on the rural roads in eastern Lancaster County and there we saw this pony and cart with children coming toward us.  Note: The photo is a bit blurry since we only had about 5 seconds to grab the camera, set it up and take the photo through the windshield! Dilapidated barns like this are a rare sight in Lancaster County but due to my peculiar photographic interest they remain interesting to me. I suppose thay take me back to my childhood visits to Southern Missouri to see my grandparents.  Many in that area had moved off to the cities and the barns were left unused, and eventually rundown eyesores. Finally, if you've stayed with us, the best story of all: Mike and JoAnna Gardner with Zane Jeremiah We stopped in at Lancaster County Women and Babies Hospital for a special visit last night on our way home. Yesterday morning we got a call from Mike Gardner informing us that the baby he and his wife, JoAnna, were expecting had arrived.  The baby was eager to arrive, like his 2 year old sister, Adoree who was several weeks early. Two weeks earlier than his due date Zane Jeremiah made his debut into the Gardner family at their residence rather than the hospital. In the early morning hours JoAnna realized that the time had fully come, but Mike felt they had a few hours.  He made a cup of hot tea preparing for the countdown of the labor pains but JoAnna warned him that she felt the arrival was more imminent than the previous pregnancy.  Sure enough, she was right.  Mike the father took over as Mike the doctor and caught the baby as he was being born.  He weighed in at a healthy 6lb 15oz. The ambulance drove JoAnna and Zane to the hospital which is where they are now resting comfortably, although I'm not sure Mike and JoAnna are over the shock of Zane's birth just yet. We had the honor of praying a dedicatory prayer over this precious little one yesterday. I also had the privilege of conducting the marriage service for Mike and JoAnna five years ago which included a footwashing ceremony. Here's a photo. "Ancient Words" "When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments" (2 Timothy 4:13). Several years ago I met Melchizedek. Actually, I met a man who played the part of Melchizedek in one of the Christian drama presentations here in Lancaster County. I spoke at his church and he shared with me his passion to see people read and study the Word of God. He had developed a series of puzzle type learning aids that encourage really digging into the Bible in an interesting way. Several weeks ago I attended a funeral service for a godly woman who had taught her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others Bible verses using the alphabet as a guide. In fact Focus on the Family used this guide as developed by her son, Robert Wolgemuth. The daily text is easy to overlook in our Bible reading. It's personal and may even seem inconsequential to the modern reader. In fact the entire fourth chapter of 2 Timothy is among the most personal portions of any of Paul's letters. In this chapter Paul acknowledges that "the time has come for my departure" (v.6). Most take this "time of departure" to mean his impending death. We serve as chaplains to an Assisted Living Center and many are nearing their "time of departure". What a blessing to relate to those who can do so with a confident resolve and inward assurance. Paul implores his trusted friend Timothy, "Come to me quickly" (v.9). Since winter is coming (v.21) he asks Timothy to bring his "cloak", which was an outer-garment similar to a coat for us. Paul was being practical and even though he recognized his departure was near he also knew this was in God's hands and he wanted to be prepared for winter's chills. We've become good friends with an older couple in their mid-eighties. They have a strong faith in God and assurance of their heavenly destination at their time of departure. However they still live with vigor and enthusiasm on this side of eternity. The other day he told me how excited he was to plant some peach trees so he could have fresh, homegrown peaches in a few years! However the part of the text that particular grips my heart, is the latter portion where Paul implores Timothy to "bring … my scrolls, especially the parchments". Here's Paul, toward the end of his life, asking for study materials! He was likely appealing for texts from the Old Testament, the Gospels, copies of his own letters and other needed documents. He had a heart to keep studying and growing in his faith. D. Edmond Hiebert writes, "Even as an old man facing certain death, the apostle has not lost his interest for study and mental pursuits. It presents a standing challenge to the minister to be an indefatigable [untiring] student, especially of the Word of God." What grips our hearts today? Do we have an ongoing hunger to know God through His Holy Word? Holy words long preserved For our walk in this world, They resound with God's own heart Oh, let the Ancient words impart. Ancient words ever true Changing me, and changing you. We have come with open hearts Oh let the ancient words impart. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, we who have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the power it brings to our lives are hungry to know more and more of that which You desire to reveal to our hearts. We build upon the elementary truths of the gospel and move on to spiritual maturity partaking of solid food which teaches us about Your righteousness. As we regularly partake of solid food we are training ourselves to distinguish right from wrong, good from bad, light from darkness. We want to be zealous in our faith and untiring in our study of Your Holy Word. Amen. We passed these stunning tulips and this photo does not do the scene justice. I thought they were fake but Brooksyne, knowing her stuff, declared them to be real.  To prove it, she jumped out of the van (I, of course, stopped first) and she got a close-up photo! Yesterday's message on Zacchaeus prompted one reader to share a photo he took during a tour to Israel. He saw it at the base of the tree purported to be the one in which Zacchaeus sat to watch Jesus.  We had a few laughs at their attempts to hype tourist dollars, but who knows? Stephen's note: According to this article trees can live many thousands of years. My favorite tree in the Bible in this regard is an oak tree first referenced in Genesis 12:6.
