Long gravel farm lane
A long gravel farm lane

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Heavenly Perspective"

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future"  (Jeremiah 29:11).

We periodically refer to Jesse and Anna Ruth, our Amish friends. They're a young couple with four little children who were our neighbors for several years.   A few years ago they moved back to the area in eastern Lancaster County where they were raised and now operate a dairy farm. I recall an incident that happened several years ago that was a teachable moment for me and illustrates today's message.

Since the Amish don't use modern transportation methods they rely on the "English" (as they refer to the non-Amish) to drive them for longer trips. Once when Jesse and Anna lived over this way Jesse called me and asked me to give them a ride back home from his parents, who also live on a dairy farm about 25 miles away. I drove over after a Bible Study to pick them up. The farm is at the end of a long gravel lane that simply takes you back to another era. Jesse came out to greet me and welcomed me into the house.

I went in and the family was visiting around the kitchen table under the diffused glow of a gas lamp. They invited me to sit down and we visited for a few minutes. Jesse's mom shared about their family and their six children. I asked, "How many of them live in Lancaster County?" She replied "All of them, but Jesse, who lives in Mount Joy."

Now you need to understand why this response is so interesting. Actually Mount Joy is in Lancaster County but I suppose from the perspective of folks who travel by horse and buggy it's as if Jesse lived in another county or even state!

However there's another perspective that is similar to the limited perception of our Amish friends.  That's the eternal, spiritual, heavenly perspective as we travel down here below year after year. In fact I believe our perspective in regard to this is much narrower.

Today's powerful verse comes from the text of a letter the prophet Jeremiah wrote to the exiles in Babylon shortly after they were taken captive.  Jeremiah was assuring them that God had not abandoned them and that He would fulfill His gracious promise. The initial, literal fulfillment came at the time of Cyrus, when the remnant returned and resettled in the land of Canaan.

The entire verse is a great promise to all believers of the glorious future that God has planned for us.  We can understand this promise from this point onward in our lives.  The Lord declares He has "plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future." (pronoun purposefully changed.) God has a wonderful plan for the remainder of our lives on this earth, our temporal future.  Jesus refers to it as the "abundant life."

But the best part is that other perspective; our eternal future.  I am convinced that the greatest experiences of this life will not even compare to the future in heaven God has planned for us!  Scripture gives us a picture unimaginable by the human mind, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what the Lord has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians 2:9).  The apostle Paul urges us to keep our thoughts anchored on the unseen, that which is yet to be revealed in the future. "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

It's all too easy to focus on the here and now; the pain and disappointment in this life rather than focusing on our ultimate goal of eternal joy in heaven.  We need to make the unseen joys of heaven the default button of our imaginations, emotions, and let it motivate us to diligently serve God day by day.

We have no idea the great and mighty things God has planned for us who truly love Him. We only see the smaller picture. He sees our labor of ministry far beyond what we see through the maze of life in our temporal existence. If we saw the big picture such as our heavenly Father does, we would look upon the lovely tapestry of life with perpetual rejoicing.  Smile and remember today that our God is an awesome God!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, we know that You care for us day in and day out as we walk in Your ways, and mercifully, even when we choose to deter from Your perfect plan You gently guide us back.  Your plan for our lives is to prosper us even as we endure hardships in this life.  Yours is a boundless hope and an eternal love that will see us through to a glorious celebration never to end but to experience for all eternity.  Thank You for Your abundant provisions, in this life and in the unseen eternal life yet to come.  Amen.

Brooksyne's note: I think about our readers today who often write to us about their ongoing spiritual and physical battles they face from day to day, some lasting year after year.  I find encouragement and great consolation in the Daily Encouragement verse from Jeremiah 29:11.  It was in the midst of uncertainty and seeming defeat that Jeremiah has a word from the Lord that He would prosper them and give them hope and a future.  Are you experiencing that promise in your life today? Perhaps your focus is only on the temporary situations that are based upon the here and now.  Thank God His hope is an eternal hope that is secure for the present and for the future.   It does not change based upon the present circumstance we face, so we do well to fix our attitudes and actions upon this hope from God.  You're certain to have a refreshing and uplifting day if you make this your goal!

"Dealing With Anger"

"But the LORD replied, 'Have you any right to be angry?'" (Jonah 4:4).

Tangled cordsWhen was the last time you felt deep anger?  In your home, at work, in your travels (road rage)?  Perhaps you felt it as you listened to the news and heard another dreaded report about the condition of the world.

I tend to get angry at inanimate frustrations such as this morning when a long electrical cord got all tangled up.  My very aggravated spirit was a sure sign that the Lord still has some more work to do on me!

But my greatest source of anger is directed at Satan and his persistent efforts to kill, steal and destroy. We are dealing with a situation (not in our family, church or any of our companies) but in a consulting manner to a troubled church with an astounding example of Satan at work and the heartache this ancient foe brings.

Perhaps you're angry right now! I suggest the daily selection as a memory verse to assist in examining our hearts when we are angry.

Jonah in the whaleJonah did not want to obey the Lord and go to Ninevah and went the other way instead. He is, of course, best known for his "Motel Whale" experience.  While in the whale he had a very distinct conversion experience and "the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land" (2:10).

Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you" (3:1).  This time Jonah obeyed and went to Ninevah and had perhaps the most remarkable response to truth in all of history.

Jonah preaching in NinevahWhen he gave the "altar call" everyone got saved! If it happened today  the Christian book publishers would be hounding Jonah promising rewarding contracts if he would simply write his "how to" book.  He would have been in extremely high demand as a conference speaker in church growth and revival circles (can't you just picture his brief bio sketch). He would have been in high demand for the interview circuit, early morning shows, Larry King Live. Imagine all the T-Shirts and other religious paraphernalia that would be sold as a result.  For those of you with marketing minds just consider the possibilities!

But Jonah was not at all thrilled about the results of his preaching. Instead of rejoicing in God's love and compassion and the repentance of a great city, Jonah sulked: "He was greatly displeased and angry" and "asked the Lord to take his life" (4:1&3).

That's when God asked Jonah this probing question: "Have you any right to be angry?"  At this point one would expect the conviction of such a question from God Himself to have melted the self-centered attitude of Jonah completely, but it didn't.  (In fact the book ends without any apparent change in Jonah's attitude.)

If we were to hear from God the very same question, "Have you any right to be angry?" what would our response be? May we consider the things that make us angry and then allow the Holy Spirit to gently ask; "Have you any right to be angry?"  Most often I believe we will find our anger is a result of a self-centered attitude or a failure to have a godly perspective on the matter.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Lord, we will likely encounter much today that we may be tempted to respond to in anger, either inwardly or outwardly.  Help us to hear your voice, examine our hearts and respond in a Christ-honoring way.  Amen.

"Power For Witness"

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Yesterday churches around the world celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Before Jesus ascended into heaven He stated very clearly the purpose of the coming of the Holy Spirit in our daily verse.  It can be summed up in the phrase, "Power for witness."

Some 721,500 days have passed since the initial outpouring when God's Holy Spirit fell upon the 120 who gathered in the Upper Room. Yet today the Holy Spirit continues to empower men and women, young and old to touch people for Christ even to the ends of the earth.

Today you have left the spiritual comfort zone of your church and entered the mission field God has called you to.  Many of you are surrounded by people who curse and blaspheme God.  There are people who may mock and revile you because of your stand for Christ.  These are the people that God has empowered you to be a witness to!

The rubber is meeting the road when you are in their presence.  The spiritually enriching, perhaps emotionally touching experience of yesterday was for this very witness.  God has called you to BE a witness (Gr. "martus").  Now this will certainly include the verbal defense and explanation of our faith. However it really involves all that we are; Christ's character being formed and demonstrated in our lives.

It is God's plan to continue to fill His people with the Holy Spirit even as He did in the book of Acts.  Peter preached a great sermon following the initial outpouring in Acts 2 and 3,000 people were saved!  We certainly still need the power of the Spirit today.  In examining Peter's sermon we note that God gave Peter power to proclaim the Gospel message and he demonstrates four characteristics we need in our witness:
1) No one has power to proclaim unless the Lord gives him strength to stand up (Acts 2:14).
2) No one has power to proclaim who leaves the Scriptures unopened and unused. Notice Peter's use of Scripture in his sermon (Acts 2:17-21, 25-28 and 34,35).
3) No one has power to proclaim whose life is not centered on Jesus (Acts 4:13).
4) No one has power to proclaim unless the foundational message of the Gospel is shared.  Peter stuck to the basics.  In Acts the main things are the plain things (Believe, repent, be baptized, be filled with the Spirit, walk with Jesus).  Let this be true in our own life and witness. (Acts 2:42)
Today the power for being His witness is still available.  I pray that we will be filled with the Holy Spirit and bear a faithful witness for Christ!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, as Your Holy Spirit empowers us we can effectively proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through Scriptural teaching and through our godly example.  Help us to faithfully witness  in the mission field You've appointed us to.  In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Flowers in trunk
Saturday evening we had a ladies banquet and we thought this was a colorful scene. I filled our car trunk with flowers to take to the banquet.  We prepared a "Name That Flower" quiz for the banquet (using Powerpoint) with photos of flowers. For those who may be interested here is a similar online edition of the quiz with a link to the answer key!

Brooksyne speaking at Ladies gathering 5/22/10Brooksyne shared a message at the banquet speaking on a gardening theme and growing in Christ with the ladies memorizing 2 Peter 3:18.

Her message included:

Three requirements for Growing Plants:

  • Bright Light
  • Fertile Soil
  • Adequate Moisture
She correlated these points to that of what it takes to be a growing Christian.

Persevering new growth through pavement
I am inspired by examples of perseverance in nature. This tiny plant keeps trying to pop up through the pavement in our church parking lot. Apparently a seed was covered over when some pavement was patched last fall and this tiny plant has a will to live!

O boundless love divine! How shall this tongue of mine

That I, a child of hell, should in His image shine!
