Porcelain cook stove
This porcelain wood cook stove sits in an 1800's farm house here in Lancaster County. The farmhouse (recently sold in an auction) was relatively well maintained but appeared as if it had not been updated for about 75 years. The owner still used a wood stove to cook with and each room was furnished in such a way that it reminded me of visiting my grandparent's house in the mid-sixties.  A neat place to visit but Brooksyne and I are way too accustomed to using modern conveniences to consider using appliances from a previous era (surely considered very modern at the time).

"No Easy Button!"

"Strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith, 'We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,' they said" (Acts 14:22).

Scott & Jean AdamsSince 2004 Scott and Jean Adam have travelled around the world in their yacht distributing Bibles in what they call "Friendship Evangelism". They wrote on their blog of "trying to find homes for thousands of Bibles" during their travels to remote regions. Yesterday they were murdered along with another couple by Somali pirates (whom I suppose were "peace-loving" Muslims). They experienced one of the hardest demands of discipleship expressed by our Lord Jesus and experienced by the early apostles and so many others through the long church age, that of giving up their lives for the cause of Christ.

Easy ButtonMany of you are familiar with a popular ad campaign run by the office store, Staples.  It features an "Easy Button", that serves as a fun visual reminder to shoppers that needed office supplies are readily available at their store. No thinking or planning needed; just stop in and make your purchase there. We bought an easy button years ago and have had a few laughs using it in our home.  Push the easy button and a voice emphatically states, "That was easy." But the easy button most certainly doesn't describe the Christian life!

Thru It All Body Shop, Mount Joy, PAWe have a business on West Main Street in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania called "Thru-It-All Body Shop." Years ago I stopped in to visit with the owner to inquire about the name of his business.  As I suspected, he told me "Thru It All" is based on a gospel song from the seventies called "Through it all."

As we shared together in conversation he recounted God's faithfulness in helping him over the years as he dealt with various hardships and overcomings that believers must endure to enter the kingdom of God.  It's the only business I've ever seen with this name. I did a Google search and couldn’t find another like it!

We live in a time when "easy" is valued, expected, considered an entitlement to many, and is usually applauded when observed by others. These folks want to make their lives easier; whether it’s their chores, their jobs, their relationships, or physical exercise. In other words whatever takes physical, mental, or emotional exertion on their part, they want to put in as little as possible and yet get the same results as those who give their all.  I think many of us can relate to this outlook in particular areas of our lives.  This is especially true when it comes to relying on modern conveniences. Microwaves, dishwashers, lawn mowers, cars and countless other conveniences didn't even exist until the 1900's and now they're a way of life to us living in the 21st century. Sadly, we often dread even the smaller tasks required for using the "convenience" appliance.

This mentality can spill over into the spiritual as well and rather than considering the harder demands of Biblical discipleship we may tend to look for the easy way. When facing a matter that may be hard or require great sacrifice we might choose an easier solution and not get the results we'd hoped for.

In the daily text Paul and Barnabas are on their first missionary journey and returning to some of the cities where they had earlier established churches.  Their basic reason for returning to these young churches is summed up in this phrase: "strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith" (Acts 14:22a).  Paul knew that those who choose to follow Christ may initially be zealous in their faith as a result of getting their hearts right with God, but he also knew that those same people, when going through life's hardships, may turn away from the very One who would see them through such difficulties.

Luke sums up the essence of their verbal message in a single phrase, "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22b).  This portion bears careful attention in an age when the call to follow Christ is often presented to unbelievers as “simple" or “easy.” We might not be too comfortable sharing Acts 14:22 with those we are seeking to win for Christ but it's part of revealed truth!

Notice the part "we must go through." This hard reality seems to be an acknowledgement that there is no easy button in life. Testings of all kinds are present from our childhood to the final breath we draw in this life. Really, the hardest test of one's life most often comes very late in life when death is within sight.  Thankfully, during our times of testings, we can "approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

I am sure some of you today are "going through many hardships."  You wonder how the particular matter you are dealing with is going to work out and when it will come about.  If you could purchase the "easy life button" you'd drop whatever's on your schedule today and head to the store to buy it.

Fellow believer, let me encourage you today.  God is faithful!  He will make a way.  It may not be easy or the way we prefer, but we have a promise of entry into the kingdom of God as we remain faithful to Him.  Let this future event encourage and guide you today as You trust Him to accomplish His plans for your life.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily Prayer: Father, though I am called to go through many hardships, there isn’t one that I face alone.  For in my weakness You are made strong, in my folly You are the God of infinite wisdom, and in my fear I take hold of the hope offered to me which is firm and secure.  You will not abandon the work of Your hands but fulfill Your purpose for me as You strengthen, sustain, and instruct me during times of testing. I do not want to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.  Keep me faithful to the end.  In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.

Got Faith Community Church signI have a new post to my humor blog titled, "Pastor Discovers New Church Growth Method"

Note: This is fiction, humor and satire. Satire is often midunderstood so I caution you, please do not write to encourage or rebuke Pastor Chip or the "Got Faith Community Church", as much as you might be tempted! However I do allow moderated comments on the humor blog if you have additional suggestions based on this church growth method or have a response to the article.

Easy Grace church signToday's mention of the Staples "easy button" just may prompt a future humor blog article concerning a church growth method successfully used by a church in Buffalo, Missouri. It began when Pastor Eddie Haskell purchased an Easy Button from the Staples Store in Springfield to illustrate his sermon on grace. The folks enjoyed it so much that he purchased a quantity of easy buttons to distribute throughout the congregation. He encouraged them to express their agreement to his message points by pressing their easy button. This led to what he calls the beautiful "voices" of God's people silmutaneously uniting in uniting his message, similar to collectively saying "Amen." Due to the creative service (and the free easy buttons) the church began to experience rapid growth. Many people, weary of the old-fashioned "Amen" response still used in many churches and wanting something higher tech began to attend the church. Pastor Eddie and the board even changed the name from "Grace Community Fellowship" to "Easy Grace Community Fellowship".

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Through It All"
Video  Andrae Crouch  This is the version I recall as a young Christian.

Through it all, through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus, I've learned to trust in God.
Through it all, through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His word.

I've had many tears and sorrows.  I've had questions for tomorrow.
There've been times I didn't know right from wrong.
But in every situation, God gave blessed consolation
That my trials only come to make me strong.

I thank God for the mountains and I thank Him for the valleys,
I thank Him for the storms He brought me through.
For if I'd never had a problem,
I wouldn't know that He could solve them,
I'd never know what faith in God could do.

Stephen's note: I have shared this story in this series in the past but feel it's a good time to do so again. It is in regard to a very specific time in my life when the song, "Through it all" meant a great deal to me.  Early in my ministry I had hit some real obstacles and closed doors.  We had moved to Pennsylvania to start a church and although I felt I had been led by the Lord, I wondered if I had made a huge mistake and was leading my bride of one year into our first major heartache.  She was 21 and I was 22 at the time.

I was driving a little blue Datsun pickup and my memory is still so vivid I know precisely where it happened.  Brooksyne was sitting in the middle and a college friend named Larry, who had come up to encourage us in our new venture, was sitting on the passenger side. I was so intensely discouraged about the doors that kept closing that tears involuntarily began to flow down my cheeks. I sure didn't want  Brooksyne or Larry to see me, so I angled my face toward the left of the window as I drove. Now that old pickup sure didn't have a tape player built in (that was a real luxury at the time) but we had a small tape player affixed to the dashboard.  Just then the song, "Through it all" began to play and God used it to renew my assurance that He would see me through that time of hardship.  He did!  That was in 1977 and a faithful group of believers have met together for over 33 years now as a result of God's opening the right doors in His timing and at His location.  God is faithful!

Frosty tree
We received a pleasant snowfall of several inches overnight.
It's especially pleasant since we are working inside our home office most of the day.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Abounding In Thanksgiving"

"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving" (Colossians 2:6,7).

It's a beautiful day here in Pennsylvania with a clear blue sky and fresh coating of snow overnight. That's where Brooksyne, Ester and I live, along with many of our local readers. But when I started my computer we received a prayer request from a New Zealand reader regarding the devastating earthquake they just experienced. I checked the news and saw that there have been many fatalities. That sure is a perspective jolt.

Erma Bombeck was a writer and humorist, who later in her life battled with kidney disease and cancer.  In 1992 she wrote, "An estimated 1.5 million people are living today after bouts with breast cancer. Every time I forget to feel grateful to be among them, I hear the voice of an eight-year-old named Christina, who had cancer of the nervous system. When asked what she wanted for her birthday, she thought long and hard and finally said, 'I don't know. I have two sticker books and a Cabbage Patch doll. I have everything!'"

That's sure a great example of contentedness and thankfulness; two character qualities that are interrelated and lacking among so many today. One of the great sins against God is unthankfulness.  Yet it is so dominant today right in the midst of affluence and is actually predicted as a mark of the last times. (See 2 Timothy 3:1-5.)

In our daily verses Paul is reminding the Colossian believers of the necessary foundational steps in the Christian walk.  Notice the key words: "received", "walk", "rooted", "built up", and "established in the faith".

But today we want to focus on just a single phrase.  Paul ends this section of Scripture with the appeal to be people "abounding in thanksgiving". The Greek word used for abound means "to superabound."

Paul writes here from a prison, surely a location very non conducive to a thankful spirit.  He could so easily be in the dumps of despair and legitimately so due to his unjust circumstances. But early on Paul had learned to praise God even while in prison (see Acts 16).  Earlier in the epistle he had himself expressed thankfulness to God for the Colossian believers.  Indeed thankfulness is a major theme in Paul's life.

Once my computer's music program froze up while playing a song and it kept repeating over and over, "Thank you, thank you, thank you…"  I was growing in frustration, but then the Spirit prompted me to hear to the repetitious message instead of dwelling on the technical problem.  I stopped and gave thanks.  The Bible talks about the rocks crying out to God, but on that day the Holy Spirit spoke to me through the computer crying out, "Thank You, Thank You".

Throughout His Word God regularly calls us to thankfulness.  Erwin Lutzer has observed, "You can learn to give thanks even if you don't feel particularly thankful. If God gives a command, He expects obedience, whether you are in the mood or not. Thankfulness, like forgiveness, is not an emotion. Thankfulness is an intelligent response of gratitude to God."  Amen!  May God help us to abound with thanksgiving today!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily Prayer: Father, our blessings come from a variety of sources, but they originate from Your generous and loving interest on our behalf.  You love to give!  In fact, You gave the ultimate gift in the sacrifice of Your Son who took the penalty for our sins.  When we consider the blessings of family, friends, work, food, and other daily comforts it stirs up a heart of gratitude. Help us to overflow in thanksgiving so that it spills out to those around us even in the midst of hardship or devastation.  When the "norm" of life is turned upside down we, in faith, look more to You and can find blessings that we hadn't considered on a normal day.  Help our brothers and sisters in the city of Christchurch as they recover from the recent destructive earthquake.  So much of our time, money and attention is given to maintaining buildings, programs and otherwise but when a community is stripped of these seeming essentials it is then that we more fully invest in one another's lives and their critical needs.  Bless, protect and guide the relief workers we pray.  In the name of Jesus we praise and thank You,  Amen.

Here's the prayer request we received this morning from New Zealand:

Hi Guys, the City of Christchurch New Zealand which was hit by a 7.1 quake last September, this morning was hit by a 6.3. Though smaller it was only about 10 kms from the city centre and 5 kms deep, making it far more lethal. The City has been devastated this time. Please pray for them along with us as they need the strength to endure this, there are fatalities this time with many injured. Our prayers are for families being able to find loved ones, or at least know where they are.  May God be with them, may he bring peace to their hearts.

Thank you again. I am so grateful that through people like yourselves we are all able to pray for each other around the world. Your site and others like it makes our spiritual family seem so close by, and that is precious in time like these. Thank you with all my heart.

Tufted tiftmouse
Brooksyne placed some old cornbread in the planter outside our office window for her bird friends. This tufted titmouse has really had quite an appetite for this special treat!

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Like Newborn Babies"

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Peter 2:2,3).

Today's message was prompted by an interesting experience yesterday in our church. Apparently young people are now taught to care for babies in school (part of a well-rounded education I suppose). They have life-like computerized babies that student "mothers" are to care for.  They are programmed to cry when they have a "need". This may be due to hunger or a diaper need.

Computerized training babies
Well, yesterday for the first time in my 35 years of ministry we had a crying computer baby in our service. During the first part of the service the "baby" rested peacefully in the infant carrier but suddenly awoke and started crying. Since the "mother" was on our worship team the grandmother promptly took the "baby" to the nursery to feed it (I am not sure whether it was a boy or girl). I learned that these "babies" can sense when they're being bottle fed and they stop crying since the act of placing the bottle in its mouth quenches the baby's appetite.

The Apostle Peter has a powerful word for all believers in today's passage.  Peter draws a poignant comparison between the appetite of a newborn baby for its mother's milk and the appetite of the believer for the nourishment of God's Word.

Peter uses this figurative language to give readers the mental picture of infants craving nourishment. Anyone who has been a parent or even been around babies knows how newborn babies vocally and vigorously express their desire to be fed when they are hungry. In fact, newborn babies act as if their life depends on the next feeding, an attitude that should be true of believers, for Jesus Himself stated that... "Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).

Peter calls his readers to have this same appetite for "pure spiritual milk" ("sincere milk of the Word" in the KJV).  The underlying Greek word translated "crave" means "to intensely crave, to desire greatly."

This verse could be interpreted as referring to believers who have only recently been born again into the family of God by grace through faith. Certainly for many this is a time of great spiritual appetite. The alternative interpretation, and one that I prefer, is that all believers are to be considered like infants in the sense that they are always in need of and totally dependent upon the pure milk of God's Word.

Heber and MarvinAppetite can be both good and bad. We once cared for Heber, a little boy from Guatemala who had a very serious heart disease.  When Heber came to our home he was 18 months old but weighed only 13 pounds. He was diagnosed with a condition known as "failure to thrive" and had very little appetite.  He was so physically weak he couldn't even sit up on his own.  Thank God he improved dramatically following heart surgery. We had the pleasure of returning him to his family in Guatemala in much better condition than when he came to us. What's more we really fattened him up as can be seen on the photo to the right! (Heber is the younger child.)

Spiritual appetite is an issue we deal with regularly as Christians.  There are phases when our appetite is great.  When the things of God are new to us we just can't seem to get enough. Hopefully we can all testify to times of intense hunger where each word of the Scriptures seems to jump off the page.

Frankly, I know what this craving means when it comes to physical food.  I can picture in my mind a big bowl of New England Clam Chowder at Lindsey's restaurant near Cape Cod or a big platter of burnt ends at Snead's Barbecue south of Kansas City, Missouri.

However as we grow older in our walk and become more familiar with spiritual realities many will testify to a declining spiritual appetite.
Thoughts cross our minds such as "I've read that Scripture passage many times" or "I've heard the Pastor speak on that topic already". We may deal with a fluctuating spiritual appetite. Wouldn't it be great to have a bottle of "holy ointment" to stimulate our spiritual appetite!

Spiritual hunger is a vital sign of spiritual health.  Peter is referring to the Word of God.  This is the prime means of spiritual growth.  Whether we're new in our faith or have walked with the Lord for many years, like newborn babies we are to crave spiritual milk.

How's your spiritual appetite?

Be encouraged today,

Praying manDaily Prayer: Jesus, You stated in the beatitudes that "blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled." In partaking from Your never-ending supply it becomes a perpetual source of life-giving nourishment. Enable us, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to hunger and thirst for the pure Word of God that feeds the soul. May our desires for worldly wisdom diminish as our desires for the eternal truths of Your Holy Word increase.  Amen.

"Speak, O Lord"
Video  Kristyn Getty  We sang this song yesterday prior to the message. This version also posts the lyrics.

Here's another version live in a church.  Video  The introduction by Keith Getty is well worth listening to.

Yes there really is a Lindsey's Restaurant near Cape Cod and a Snead's BBQ west of Belton, Missouri (south of Kansas City).

Note regarding KC BBQ: Technically barbecue is meat slowly roasted in a pit with a wood fire, although many use the term for grilling meats on charcoal and even a gas grill. Although we once went to a restaurant in New England that called it BBQ by merely pouring some barbecue sauce over the meat. (An insult to a connoisseur  of fine BBQ from Kansas City!)

Burnt ends (also known as "brownies") refer to the very charred end pieces of the barbecued beef brisket.

I am sure my perspective is subjective, but Kansas City is the place for great BBQ! Here's an article.

The photo shows my brother Mike pointing to the famous Snead's sign!

Our other blogs:
"A Daily Prayer" - A blog simply posting the daily prayer. We keep this up each day since it's merely the prayer from the Daily Encouragement Net message!
"A Little Foolishness" - Humor/satire blog (a great outlet for non-serious writing but at times with a subtle message!) Last updated with the story of Mildred Swanson, who joyfully discovers her "spiritual gift" is sending forwarded emails! (Note: This material is satire!)
"Clear Minded" - Longer, periodic articles on specific issues impacting the faithful believer and church. (Actually this is my intent but I haven't done much with it!)
"Hymns of Hope" - Brooksyne along with two friends made a CD using classic hymns. Brooksyne tells the background story of the 11 hymns. All of these songs are also available for download on the site.
