"God's Kindness"

"But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:4-7).

My father-in-law Brooklyn Sherrell (now deceased) drove a truck for 40 years and frequently stopped to help people whose car was broken down. On occasion this got him into trouble since taking the time to help others in need was not on his work schedule. Deliveries needed to be on time. Sometimes he would take the people home with him whose car was in repair.

Once, while Brooksyne was in Bible College, a group of young people were broken down in Tulsa and Brooklyn towed their car so it could be fixed. As a way of thanking him they gave him a 10 speed bicycle and some Christian record albums. Brooklyn passed on the bicycle and albums to Brooksyne and so she remembers this incident very well.

There's a lot of evil in the world, a lot of wicked acts are taking place. But there's also a lot of "random acts of kindness" taking place all over. It sure cheers the heart to consider them!

Today I want to consider an eternally deliberate, purposeful and planned act of kindness. It wasn't a random act. The daily portion of Scripture surely contains some of the richest theological truths in the entire Bible. Every phrase is rich and loaded with truth.

Let's just savor the last one today; "expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus." The Greek word for kindness "chrestotes" is used rather infrequently in the New Testament, and only five times does it refer to a characteristic of God. Theologian Charles Hodge points out that "God's grace is manifested through His kindness towards us, and that kindness is exercised through Christ and for His sake. The ground of this goodness is not in us but in Christ, and hence its character as grace, or unmerited favor."

Isn't it wonderful that one of the eternal qualities used to describe the God of the Universe is "kindness"! In fact one of the richest expressions of His kindness is found in a teaching in the gospels that can be easily overlooked, since it primarily deals with our love for one another. Jesus, in teaching that we are to love even our enemies, describes the Most High as "kind to the ungrateful and wicked" (Luke 6:35). All over the world today His kindness is being demonstrated even to the ungrateful and wicked, many of whom defiantly deny Him. God's kindness is unlimited.

Christ's willingness to offer himself to save the lost world shows the extent of God's kindness. As God's chosen children we are to imitate His kindness in our relationship with others. "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12).

I want to accept His kindness with gratitude and live my life as His child expressing kindness to others. And I believe you do as well. Today let's rejoice in God's kindness and allow it to overflow in our lives as we serve Him and as we serve others.

How kind and gracious is the Lord,
how kind and gracious is the Lord.

He my ev'ry need provides, my soul is satisfied.
How kind and gracious is the Lord. *

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, throughout Scripture You show us practical ways that we can show kindness to others. Though it is easier to show it to some more than others, You command us to show kindness to all people, both friend and foe. Help us to love our neighbors as ourselves, to treat others as we want to be treated, to consider others before we consider ourselves, and to give of ourselves without expecting anything in return. When we do these acts of kindness it will give us opportunity to represent You, Father, as an obedient vessel through which Your Spirit flows. Flow through me today. Amen.

Lee PotteigerThis last Saturday Ester and I went to a mountain lake with Lee, a friend we met during our interim pastoral service in a church near Harrisburg. Lee has an interesting testimony. As an adult had no connections with any church. One day he was mowing his lawn and noticed his young son was missing. He drove his lawn tractor around looking for him and noticed a group of men working at the neighborhood church installing a new furnace. He asked if any of them had seen his son and they got to talking. They invited him to church where he accepted the Lord and he's been going ever since and actively serving

Lee works as a designer for a large company that makes electrical connections. In fact it's likely that many of us have modular jacks in our homes that incorporates one of Lee's patented designs!

Please note: We expect our preparation and thus the transmission of these daily messages to be inconsistent the next two weeks. We are traveling out to Missouri for a family reunion. This afternoon we will go to Baltimore and then very early tomorrow morning out to Kansas City. I will spend the day tomorrow with my Aunt and Uncle and then early Wednesday morning go to Springfield with John Wiseman, a friend I met many years ago through this ministry. I will visit my friend David Simpson and his wife Sandy Wednesday. On Thursday - Sunday we will have our annual Steincross family reunion in Branson Missouri.

Although we could prepare these messages ahead of time and place them on a scheduled automatic update to the mailing list we choose not to do so. It seems like the niche we are comfortable with is the freshly written daily message. We hope we can get another couple of messages out this week but aren't sure We expect to have access to our email throughout our trip.

"The Builder Of Everything"

"For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything" (Hebrews 3:4).

Today I gathered with my friend Jesse's masonry crew for the last time. Jesse is my Amish friend who has run a masonry business the last several years. He is now beginning a farming operation (dairy herd). He invited me to join his crew for breakfast and I had the opportunity to pray with the men and encourage them individually as they move on. They were sure a nice group of young men and I was the "old man" among them by some 20 years.

I enjoy construction work and the periodic opportunities I had to join the crew. Although I don't have specific building skills or training I suppose I am a handyman as a result of having a hard-working father who modeled the work ethic for me. He was a pipefitter but also had general common sense building skills and could fix about anything. There are certain sights, sounds and even smells I associate with his workbench area. For instance his old Craftsmen power tools had a distinctive motor smell I can still recall to this day.

Sand bottleConstruction affords us the opportunity to be reminded of the handiwork of God. Many of you have seen one of those glass jars filled with various colors of sand that has been carefully arranged in such a way as to show a design, such as a desert scene or sunset. We would laugh if someone told us the design was merely a result of randomly shaking the jar. No, we sensibly recognize that such a design takes intelligence and skill. A few shakes would destroy the design and no amount of further random shaking will ever restore the original design.

Our earthly homeConsider the readily observable truth in the daily verse. "Every house is built by someone." If I were to stand across the road and observe my house and conjecture that it was merely the result of a tornado which came through I would rightly be scoffed at. We all recognize someone built my house. Every house, even the most simple, didn't just happen, it was built by someone.

Yet many place their faith in a scheme that is far more ridiculous.

I accept the matter of fact statement that concludes the verse, "God is the builder of everything." Many in the world mock at such a belief. "It's too simple"; or "it's not scientific", or "it's old-fashioned" they say. That's OK. I'll just remember glass jars of sand and place my faith in the God of the universe for He is indeed the builder and overseer of everything!

O Lord, my God when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder.
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul my Savior God to Thee.
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul my Savior God to Thee.
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, You are great and greatly to be praised. You are the Builder of everything we see and so much that we've not yet seen. We are looking forward to the future city with eternal foundations where You are the Architect and Builder. Our everlasting home in heaven is not built with human hands, but by Your divine design. Keep us faithful till that glorious promotion day! Amen.

A ministry I appreciate that has a strong defense for the Biblical teaching concerning creation is Answers in Genesis: Upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse.

The Case For A Creator, HardcoverThe Case For A Creator, Hardcover
By Lee Strobel / Zondervan

From evolutionary icons to the uniqueness of planet Earth, from irreducible complexity to the kalam cosmological argument, Lee Strobel gives full rein to his keen analytical mind in addressing these issues and more. But don't expect an inaccessible tome of arcane scientific terms; Strobel's years of newspaper reporting gives the book a conversational style. Relying on transcriptions of his interviews with experts in the pertinent fields, he tells the incredible stories about the hard science behind what some have termed creationism. Extensively researched, this book should a classic apologetic text for years to come.

"Quiet Faithfulness"

A daily, Bible-based perspective of hope, encouragement and exhortation.

Eldon Lehman

"Quiet Faithfulness"

"A faithful man who can find?" (Proverbs 20:6b). "A faithful man will abound with blessings" (Proverbs 28:20a).

Yesterday we attended the memorial service for Eldon Lehman, a friend of ours who went home to be with the Lord last week. We met Eldon and his wife, Anna Mary, in our church in early 2001 after moving here from New England. Three years later we attended Anna Mary's funeral. This was an extremely difficult time for Eldon when he said good-bye to his wife of 50 years. He didn't know at the time that God had a special woman whom he would meet in the near future who was also a widow. In the fall of 2005 we attended Eldon and Doris' wedding reception. What a joyous occasion this day was as God brought these two godly people together at an age when neither would have expected to marry again.

We had Eldon over to our home for a meal and fellowship several times following Anna Mary's death. He was a thoughtful man, very deliberate and wise in his conversation. He was soft-spoken demonstrating gentleness and humility. Shortly after meeting him Ester noted a resemblance to Dr. Dobson and called him by that name. He was a little embarrassed and blushed at the first mention of the resemblance, but always had a kind smile when Ester would call him "Dr. Dobson."

Yesterday our pastor used the phrase, "quiet faithfulness" to describe Eldon. Although he did not grow up in our church he started attending when he moved to Lancaster County over 50 years ago after he married a Lancaster County girl. Pastor drew a picture of his faithful service through the years, from a young man, through his middle-aged years, right up to his passing. Eldon was active in service not only in his church but in several other community ministries as well.

The truth of the second daily Scripture is often most evident in the later years of life. Faithfulness has its rewards, both in this life and the one to come. If you have salvation you are actually abounding in blessings now but you can become discouraged with present trials. God's Word is ever true. Perhaps you need to consider someone you know that has served God faithfully for many years and observe how they abound with blessings. But just remember the greatest blessings are yet to come!

I am sure you know some people like Eldon don't you? I've met several in my life but not as many as I would like. And it seems to me they're getting harder and harder to come by. Character qualities like faithfulness, steadfastness, and consistency sound boring to many people today. But they still matter to God. "A faithful man shall abound with blessings", and he does, both in this life and the life to come. I am confident that Eldon has heard those wonderful words from the supremely Faithful One, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Jesus, may my life be marked by faithfulness, holiness and integrity. I know that these character traits are not developed over a short period of time, but over a lifetime. Obedience does bring blessing and it does bring eternal reward. Help us not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time that You have ordained, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. It is my heart's desire to hear those words from You in describing my life on earth, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Amen.

Brooksyne's Note: As I was cutting fresh flowers this morning I was thinking about the memorial service yesterday and some thoughts that our pastor shared ran through my mind that I especially identified with. He mentioned that pastors need models, such as Eldon, within the church body who exemplify Christ-like character. Pastors and their families have much to learn from those who sit among the pews but are active in demonstrating their faith.

Stephen and I have discussed many times how individuals within the congregations we've pastored have challenged us to live more faithfully for Christ. It wasn't always in the words they spoke to us, but it was in the way they honored Christ in the midst of adversity. It was also in their faithfulness toward the house of the Lord and in their loving support of our leadership as their pastor. Many of these dear people that come to mind regularly read our daily encouragement. Please know that you have helped us to mature in our walk with Christ over the 25 years we pastored and we thank God for you regularly.

This is a book that Eldon found great comfort in reading after his first wife died in 2004. Yesterday during a time of tribute his daughter read an excerpt that had especially blessed him.

HeavenHeaven By Randy Alcorn / Tyndale House
As the years pass and we watch more and more of our family, friends and mentors pass away, it is only natural to ask questions about heaven. However, our understanding of heaven is often limited to a few half-forgotten Sunday school lessons and the insubstantial images provided by popular movies and T.V. In Heaven Randy Alcorn provides us with a thoroughly researched and biblically definitive description of heaven. As Alcorn addresses our most serious questions about heaven, including the nature of judgment, and answers a few of our less serious questions as well, including the accessibility of cafe mochas in the sweet by and by, we will develop a deeper understanding of our eternal destination and will find the courage to strive for heaven while were living on earth. Click here for more information or to order online.

The last time I saw Eldon was when he came to our home to return a book I had loaned him. I had suggested it following the death of his first wife. I would recommend it as one of the most powerful books I have ever read on the topic of trust.

Trusting GodTrusting God By Jerry Bridges / Nav Press
Do you find it easy to trust God---until adversity strikes? When life clouds over, do you suddenly begin to suspect that you only imagined His care for you? Bridges uncovers three essential truths about God: He is completely sovereign; He is infinite in wisdom; and He is perfect in love. Building on these three rocks, Bridges shows how we can learn to trust God, even when we don't understand what He is doing. 215 pages, softcover from NavPress. Eternal perspective

"The Unseen Eternal"

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Burd Coleman is a tiny village near Cornwall, Pennsylvania that is merely a single road with identical stone factory houses built on each side. These homes are about 150 years old but have been carefully restored and are beautiful; many decorated with colorful flowers. It seems as you drive by them that they're from an ancient era and are really old.

But are they older homes or are they newer homes? It depends on your perspective. Actually they were built when over 90% of the present Christian era (up to today) had already taken place. From this perspective they are newer homes!

One of the great challenges of living for God in the daily grind is keeping a good balance of spiritual and eternal perspective. We are bombarded with loud data to accomodate and even lure the physical senses and it can so easily drown out the "still small voice" in which God often speaks to us.

We face this challenge whether life is peaceful and prosperous or whether life is beset with multiple trials and hardships. The tendency is to fix our eyes on what is seen. Whether life is going well or is very hard we need to always remember "this too will pass."

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen." Fixing our eyes in this manner requires concentration and focus. It means to "fix one's gaze upon, to concentrate one's attention on." Physically our eyes observe the seen but Paul is referring to our spiritual eyes here, a focus on the unseen, eternal Kingdom that awaits all who follow Christ.

"For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." What we now see with our physical sight is temporary. Only God who created and oversees the entire universe is stable and unchanging. The Greek word used here for "temporary" (proskairos) indicates the contrast between the temporal, which is also indefinite and the eternal, which is definitive.

Today I urge you to focus your heart on the One of whom we sing, "Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not, as Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be". Fix your eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. In the midst of any struggles you are dealing with on this day view these struggles not just with a temporal perspective but also with a spiritual perspective. If you do this, You will surely see the unseen eternal.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart;
I want to see You, I want to see You.
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart;
I want to see You, I want to see You.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen C. Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, I ask for Your Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I may know you better. I pray that the eyes of my heart may be enlightened that I may better know the hope to which You have called me, the riches of Your glorious inheritance available to me, and Your incomparably great power for those of us who believe. May the limited view I physically enjoy while journeying here on earth not overshadow the glorious view or faith perspective of my future eternal home. Many treasures that do not have permanent storage here on earth have an eternal place in heaven so I want my focus to be heavenward so that earthbound entrapments don't rob my heart of the rewards that are yet to come. Amen.

baby ducklings
Early this morning we witnessed what we believe is likely the very first dip into the creek for some baby ducklings we first saw yesterday. The mother had been brooding over them after they hatched but my imposing presence as I tried to get a close-up photo prompted a trip to the creek and an apparent reluctant water entrance by the babies!

ListenClick here to listen to us read this message on your audio player.

"What's In Your Hand?"

Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" (Exodus 4:2).

We pass a sign on Route 23 near Lancaster Pennsylvania advertising an interesting business, cleaning up dog doo-doo from your yard, a service of a "professional p**per scooper". Of course our initial reaction was "You've got to be kidding" but the sign presents this as a serious business proposition and has a phone number. I have no idea what credentials are needed for this profession nor what degree of formal education may be required. But given the nutty classes taught in some colleges I suppose such a class shouldn't surprise me.

Special scooperWe try to see that Roxie does her business in the woods when we're out on trails but when needed we take care of backyard messes without the professional service. We share this duty as a family. We may not be professionals but we feel confident we can handle this. Here's the scooper we use for this purpose. That's one thing I sometimes have in my hand!

What do you have in your hand? Maybe you have a cup of coffee, like me!

"What is that in your hand?" The Lord asked this question to Moses during his encounter at the burning bush. Moses had been called to deliver God's people from bondage. Rather than jumping at the opportunity he's reluctant and unsure of himself and he begins to make excuses. "They won't listen", "I can't talk good", etc. Sound like us?

But God had a plan and that plan was going to be fulfilled. Of course the all-knowing God knew the answer to His own question about what was in Moses' hand, but He had an object lesson for Moses. He still teaches us through object lessons.

Moses answered, "a staff." God wanted to teach Moses that He could use the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary. Moses threw the staff to the ground and it became a snake and then back to a staff. Wow! Then God used a demonstration with Moses' hand. Surely Moses would be ready to obey now. But a few verses later Moses said, "O Lord, please send someone else to do it" (4:13). Well, as you know, Moses finally obeyed and 3500 years later is one of the great figures in history.

What's in your hand this morning? Of course I'm not speaking literally now but spiritually. God still has a plan and He's still using ordinary people and ordinary things to do the extraordinary. In yesterday's message I shared about a mature couple mentoring a young couple in preparation for marriage. I enjoy seeing ordinary people using their "hands" for God's work. People just like you and me.

"Just ordinary people, God uses ordinary people.
He chooses people just like me and you,
Who are willing to do as He commands.
God uses people that will give Him all.
No matter how small your all may seem to you.
Because little becomes much,
As you place it in the Master's hand." *

Daily prayer: Lord, today help me to realize that you desire to use me in the ordinary events of life.

NoahThis morning I talked to my older brother, Pat. He told me that his son had temporarily sat Noah, his grandson, on the top of the car while he loaded something. Noah apparently thought his dad was placing him up on the top for the ride and informed him, "I can't ride up here, I might fall off."

Amish NASCARYesterday I mentioned a young lady who had been in our church as a little girl who now works with NASCAR. I thought you might enjoy this special edition local photo, titled Amish NASCAR!

The business mentioned in the first paragraph was not a joke.
