The Cure
"If I Just Touch The Hem Of His Garment"
I took today's photo in an office foyer in Springfield, Missouri.  It is one of four portraits that depict the various works of Christ. Astute Bible students will recognize the Biblical miracle being depicted. These are original art works by Ron DiCianni and are outstanding to view in their original setting.  As I recall they are about six feet wide.

"Power Transmission"

"At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?'" (Mark 5:30).

Brooksyne was trimming some hedges on Saturday when suddenly the hedge trimmer stopped working. After she could find no reason for the malfunction she called me to check the outlet to make sure the plug was still in and it was. I then wondered if she might have tripped a circuit so I plugged in another electrical appliance and it worked just fine. I carefully examined the hedge trimmer wondering if it had overheated or jammed or perhaps the motor had blown but saw nothing visibly wrong with it. We were both stumped and a bit frustrated since we wanted to complete the project!

Finally I checked the long extension cord from beginning to end. Turns out she had cut the power line nearly in half with the hedge trimmer, but enough of the vinyl outer cord wrap was still intact holding it together which masqueraded the damage. I suppose it didn't help much that it was a green cord, not a very good color to use when trimming green shrubs with piles of foliage spilling over the cord. I spliced the cord back together and it works good as new but I think we'll use a bright orange cord for hedge trimming in the future!

Transmission of power is something most of us take for granted. We flip a light switch on without thinking about the power transmitting through wires which makes the light come on. But today let's examine an occasion where a transmission of divine power was released.

Today's verse offers an interesting detail concerning the healing of the woman who had the bleeding issue for 12 years. Her condition would have made her a social outcast and the best medical care of her day was of no help. She had spent all she had but had only gotten worse.

She heard about Jesus and likely due to the social shame of her disease did not choose to approach Him publically but "came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed" (Mark 5:27,28).

"Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering" (v. 29). Try to put yourself in her place and sense the tremendous joy and relief that flooded her spirit as she experienced the healing power of Almighty God.

"At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him." The dispenser of healing power realized the uniqueness and urgency of this woman's touch of faith. Many were also touching Him when He asked the disciples, "Who touched me?" The disciples must have wanted to scratch their heads at this question as they responded, “You see the people crowding against you….and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’” But a distinct transmission of power had taken place from the Healer to the healed and Jesus wanted to convey a special message to the woman who touched the hem of His garment.

Today His power is not cut off nor is His ear deafened that He cannot hear our needs. He is still touching people's lives with His healing power. He often uses human agents in the transmission of His power but He also works sovereignly and has a set purpose for each of our lives. May Christ be glorified in us today!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: We praise You, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all comfort who helps us in our daily trials and meets our every need. When we come up against afflictions and trials that exceed our own ability to endure we rely not on ourselves but on You Father, who heals the sick and raises the dead, who delivers us from deadly peril. It is on You that we have set our hope, confident that You will continue to deliver us, that You will make a way when there is none. We trust in You, our sovereign, holy and powerful God for everything we have need of. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
(Prayer based on II Corinthians 1)
