"The King Of The Ages" "Great and marvelous are Your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages" (Revelation 15:3). NASCAR is tremendously popular here in the US. This weekend the races will be held at the Dover International Speedway in Dover Delaware and I have friends who will be attending. I went to the Saturday race at Dover last year to get a sense of what a NASCAR race is all about. Each weekend from February through November these automobile races are held all over the country with hundreds of thousands attending. A friend shared this story with me several years ago concerning a NASCAR race in New Hampshire. He had gone to the race with his son and was walking back through the parking lot following the race when he noticed quite a commotion. A crowd had gathered and he heard exclamations, "The King, it's the King!" He went over to see what was going on and sure enough there was Richard Petty, "The king of stock car racing" in a pickup, talking with fans and taking pictures. My friend observed in his email to me, "I have a real hard time thinking of him as 'The King'. We both know there is only one true 'KING'." I sure expect that was a great teaching moment with his son and I am going to use it as a teaching illustration for this message! The daily Scripture proclaims the only King worthy of glory and praise. These designations distinguish God from all others with the title of king. He is the "Lord God Almighty" and the "King of the ages." Here on earth there have been many kings and in some countries the title is still used today such as in England where the future king's recent royal wedding took place. The word "King" is first found in the Bible in Genesis 14. The designation "King" is often used for celebrities as well such as Richard Petty and Elvis Presley, who is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". (I recall hearing James Hamill, the pastor of the church Elvis periodically attended in Memphis Tennessee, share how he would sit in the balcony and cry, presumably due to the Holy Spirit speaking to his heart about his backslidden condition.) But there is only one true King and as God's redeemed we are in this King's kingdom. One glorious day we will all gather as a great multitude in heaven and altogether we will shout in praise to our King, "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory!" It must be so exciting for NASCAR fans to gather around celebrities like Richard Petty. And to this day Elvis Presley has a large, loyal following as do many others. But right now every one of us has the incomparably greater opportunity to approach the throne of grace to have audience with our heavenly King! I'm a child of the King, a child of the King! With Jesus my Savior, I'm a child of the King! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Jesus, You are the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. I pledge my allegiance to You and desire to bring You glory, honor and praise through my thoughts, my words and my actions today. "There is none like You" is the melody of my heart today. No one else can touch my heart like You do. I could search through all eternity and find there is none like You! And You are enough! Amen. Little by little we are staining the fence behind our home. It's a big undertaking since everything needs power washed first and we have not only the fence but also the barn and oversized deck to stain. Ester is doing a great job! We are trying not to disturb the tiny bird which has made a nest in the birdhouse. However the owner does not like us messing around in that area! (Due to the built-up nest I was unable to see the eggs.) Here's a photo I took last year at the NASCAR race in Dover. My friend Ken Pierce and I sat at the first turn, apparently considered a good seat in racing, perhaps because that is where there is a greater likelihood of accidents! The cars had to slow a bit at each turn but were still roaring by at merely 150 miles per hour. Brooksyne joined us for awhile but after watching the Sprint cars practice and hearing the volume and seeing the rather monotonous action (at least to a non-racing fan) she walked over to a mall next door. I prepared a message last year based on the experience as an illustration. I'm pretty sure this was photoshopped. I spoke to my neighbor yesterday afternoon to confirm what I had assumed based upon last year's harvest (scroll down). One of our readers wrote to tell us that he grows the tomato seedlings from seed that were likely used for this planting. So let's have another farm quiz: Yesterday they used this contraption on the field across from our house. It appears to be a tractor pulling a propane tank but has an important function. Anyone know what this is? (Answer here and I will post the correct answer tomorrow). Send a message to Stephen & Brooksyne |
