Brooksyne took a short video and, yes, Mollie almost always catches the frisbee in the air, both good and bad tosses! "Showing Honor" Listen to this message on your audio player. "Outdo one another in showing honor" (Romans 12:10b). "Pay to all what is owed to them...honor to whom honor is owed" (Romans 13:7). Let marriage be held in honor among all" (Hebrews 13:4). At the end of each year we often hear news reports about various lists and the results of polls taken. I heard one that reported "the most admired people for 2014", most of whom I have very little admiration! In my 60 years I've never been a participant in such a poll but it did get me musing about people I do admire. I hope today's message (and several that will follow) prompts your consideration of people you admire and why. Today I express my appreciation and admiration for my dad's younger brother, Don, my only living uncle. He and his wife, Aunt Mary, live in Kentucky near one of their daughters. Although my dad had six brothers he always had a special closeness to Don. As a young child I recall going to see Uncle Don and Aunt Mary in their home in the Kansas City area. Early on I recall my dad claiming what a great mechanic he was and remember when he was stumped about something mechanical he would say, "I need to call Don about this". We visited with them through the years although they did not always live in the Kansas City area. The photo to the left is from our most recent visit in the summer of 2013. I remember how excited Dad was to go see Don or if he was coming to visit us! As my father faced the challenges common to those in their senior years Don and Mary were especially attentive and supportive, which filled a critical need since all four of their children lived far away. Don and Mary have either surpassed or surely are nearing their 60th wedding anniversary. "Let marriage be held in honor among all" (Hebrews 13:4). Uncle Don and Aunt Mary are very devout in their faith. I recall how supportive they were in their younger retirement years as they faithfully served their church in western Missouri. Aunt Mary for many years made the long bus trip from western Missouri to Washington DC to be among the pro-life representatives who gather in prayer, grief and repentance on behalf of the tragic commemoration of Roe vs. Wade. In a couple of weeks my brother, Pat, and I will be going down to the March and inevitably we will remember Aunt Mary's unswaying devotion to this cause. Today's first two Scripture texts deal with honoring others and come from Paul's epistle to the Romans. The first states, "Outdo one another in showing honor" (Romans 12:10 ESV). The Amplified Bible states, "giving precedence and showing honor to one another". The Precept online Bible study states, "To honor someone is to show genuine appreciation and admiration. Believers who are being transformed by the renewing of their mind should be becoming more and more sensitive to showing respect, to acknowledging the accomplishments of others, to demonstrating genuine love by not being jealous or envious. These are the marks of a sincere faith which is maturing. Such a one in fact is to take the lead in the carrying out of these actions. If we have truly presented ourselves as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1), we should be growing in these graces (and they can only be carried out by His empowering grace)." We tend to take the phrase in the second verse, "honor to whom honor is owed" in the sense of giving honor to civil authorities, which does appear to be the main focus in the context. However we contend it's a good principle to practice toward all to whom honor is due. Often those who are the most worthy of honor are the people who receive very little honor. Today we encourage you to consider those worthy of honor in your life. Likely they will be the people who have impacted you most directly. Brooksyne and I thank the Lord for the many through the years who have poured themselves into our lives. It's made a positive difference for here and now, and in many cases for all of eternity. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Father, we thank You for the greatest hero of our faith, Jesus Christ, who took on flesh, walked in holiness and gave His all, that we might have access to You and become Your children. But You've also chosen ordinary folks who walk right alongside us in our earthly journey who have taken us by the hand, tucked us in their heart, and committed us to prayer, while also living in a manner worthy of honor. We do give them our utmost respect and honor, and pray that You will bless them and assure them that their investment will bring eternal reward. We give You thanks for their life, their devotion to us, and the lasting difference it has made in us. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
