Creekside greenhouse geraniums in Lancaster County 6/4/11
We enjoy buying flowers and went to Elam and Naomi, our Amish neighbor's greenhouse this last Saturday. I especially like the smell of geraniums! The boys had a fun time playing up in the support pipes seen at the top of the photo like it was a jungle gymn.

"Warnings And Pleadings"

"With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, 'Save yourselves from this corrupt generation'" (Acts 2:40).

Donegal Road snapping turtle 6/5/11
Early yesterday morning on the way to church we saw a large snapping turtle (about a foot long) just sitting on Donegal Road. For some reason he just wasn't interested in moving along off the road. I didn't really care to get out of our van and help him along and warnings and pleadings would have little value due to some communication problems. We knew it wasn't the safest place to be and were thankful that when we drove back by on the way home there was no evidence of a flattened turtle!

Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost surely set the standard for apostolic preaching. His Spirit empowered message focused on Jesus Christ. He warned and pleaded with His listeners, and the results were a remarkable surge of growth in the new church and set the early pattern for life as a community of believers (2:41-47).

Peter's entire message contained more than the selections recorded in Acts 2, for the careful historian Luke states, "With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, 'Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.'"

Peter's appeal was that of warning and pleading, indicating the solemn call to conversion and discipleship. The final phrase contains this challenge, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." These words sound harsh and unloving today.  So tempting to the preacher, particularly in America, to explain how Jesus can make your life better, but leave out the Scriptural conditions to attaining that promise.

We still live in a "corrupt generation". This sermon would preach in any generation but it sure seems that with the intensity of the corruption escalating year by year, hugely overcrowded prisons, fatherless children, etc. it's especially fitting today.

Today let me, using the very same words of the apostle Peter, warn and plead with you, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."

We do so by repenting of our sins and placing our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and then seeking to live in obedience to God.  For as Peter said many years later, "not living the rest of our earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God" (1 Peter 4:2).

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Jesus, I consider the words of Paul in Romans 14:7 where he reminds us that everyone's life and eventual death has a relation to others as well as themselves.  The choices I make and the actions that come from those choices either better my family name or inflict disaster on society.  I choose to live my life according to Your will and enjoy the present and eternal blessings that come from this decision.  I, with absolute intention, refuse to give Satan a foothold in my life thereby bringing evil human desires that eventually destroy my faith in You. I want to carefully guard the basic spiritual principles prayerfully instilled in me through Your Holy Word.  Amen

Amish girl with team on E-town Road 6/4/11
Saturday we came up behind some interesting traffic on Elizabethtown Road which delayed us a few minutes since we intended to take a right at the next intersection and didn't want to startle this young Amish girl by passing and then swinging in front of her. As it turns out Brooksyne thinks we scared her more by following until we could make the turn!
