"Considering God's Wonders"

"Stop and consider God's wonders" (Job 37:14).

Our home overlooks a country lane that parallels a large field presently planted in tall field corn.  We are so blessed to have this "preserved farmland" across from us, meaning there is a restriction on the deed limiting present and future use to agriculture. This outstanding view is one of the main reasons we bought our home.

During this season thousands of fireflies appear each night like tiny twinkling Christmas lights strung all through the field.  I sure wish I could capture it in a picture and share it with you. It's a stunning scene.

FireflyThe firefly is a bioluminescent insect, scientifically known as Pyractomena borealis. It sure is an interesting creature and we marvel as a family observing this special creation of God. I sure hope you've all caught a firefly and held it in your hand at some point in your life.  They have a very distinct odor, which I can still remember from playing with them as a child (we called them lightning bugs). It's not necessarily an unpleasant odor but it is distinct and is believed to be from defensive chemicals the fireflies secrete to deter predators. Birds, spiders and lizards have learned that fireflies will make them sick, so they leave them alone!

A firefly is not hot or even warm to the touch.  Amazingly nearly 100% of a firefly's luminescent energy is converted to light, while a typical light bulb only gives off 10% of its energy as light, with 90% being wasted as heat.  By the way, the light has a "romantic" purpose as well.

Child catching firefliesBecause fireflies tend to fly low to the ground and are not very fast, they are easy prey for children. In Baltimore in the 1950s, thousands of children caught fireflies and took them to Johns Hopkins University researchers, who paid 25 cents per hundred live bugs. In the summer of 1952, one boy turned in more than 37,000 (was he capturing these bugs in his sleep?). Some feared the area's firefly population would be wiped out, but if it was ever threatened, it recovered just fine.

During Job's trial he had four human "comforters".  Elihu, who was younger, spoke after the three older friends.  His viewpoint on Job's suffering is surely not the final one, and like all human perspectives on this mysterious subject, it is flawed and incomplete. (God has the final word later in the book.) But Elihu makes some interesting points in trying to minister to Job that I believe are very helpful, particularly at the end of his discourse where he points to God's creative wonders.

He urges Job to "Stop and consider God's wonders."  I believe that's a good exercise in getting a proper perspective on any matter.  A few verses earlier Elihu declared, "How great is God--beyond our understanding!" (36:26).

How can you explain the firefly using an evolutionary model?  I am sure it's been attempted and various theories have been postulated.  Believing these theories is like taking a leap in the dark but is the only available option for those who have rejected the Biblical Creator.  The firefly is just one of scores of God's unexplainable wonders.

Today, let me encourage you to consider God's wonders.  They abound surrounding us night and day.  And then hear this important reminder from Elihu; "Remember to extol His work, which men have praised in song" (Job 36:24).

Well, I noticed last night the fireflies in our area are nearing the end of their two month life cycle as there were a lot fewer twinkling lights on the corn rows. However another distinct observation of a summer insect has begun as we turn the summer calendar page to the dog days of August; the nearly deafening noise of the cicada synchronizing their buzzing in the trees!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer:  Father, we do extol Your work and praise You with our lips, with our voice and with our devotion to follow You all the days of our lives.  We stop and consider Your great wonders and mighty works as we acknowledge You to be the Creator of all things.  Your ways are perfect and beyond human understanding.  It is all the more reason why we must rely on Your guidance and not lean on our own understanding.  Today we acknowledge You in all our ways and ask You to direct our paths and increase our understanding in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Yesterday was a beautiful summer day and we want to share a few photos from the course of our journey.

Amish banking
Near Intercourse, PA we passed this Amish open cart preparing to enter the drive-through lane at the Susquenhanna Bank. This brought back a recollection of the time I went to the bank with my Amish friend several years ago, riding along with him and his son Moses in his horse and buggy. As Jesse was at the drive-through making a financial deposit his horse made an emission deposit.

Amish youth galloping on horse through Bird In Hand PA
Yesterday we came up behind this Amish youth
galloping his horse right down Main Street in Bird In Hand, PA.
It looks like the tourist family was enjoying the riding demonstration!
This area has a lot of tourists due to interest in the Amish way of life. Yesterday as Brooksyne and I stepped out of our car preparing to make a chaplain visit a man with a European accent approached us in the company's parking lot. He was lost and seeking directions to a local restaurant. He was from Russia on vacation.

"The Doctrine Of Death"

"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope" (I Thessalonians 4:13).

MK Abraham
Gerald, a friend in our church, recently passed along a message to me that I in turn have adapted and want to share with Daily Encouragement readers.

It is a brief meditation that followed the obituary for M.K. Abraham (pictured), an Indian Christian who recently went to be with the Lord at the age of 100. He had accepted the Lord early in life and surrendered his life for the Lord's work.

As I read the material I was especially intriqued by the phrase "doctrine of death", something I have previously rarely considered as a doctrine, but it surely is.

In the Christian life it is not possible to have fruits unless we have roots. We must know our doctrines; that is what we believe and why we believe them. We must know about the doctrine of God, doctrine of the church, the doctrines of salvation, works and faith and so forth.

In the daily text the Apostle Paul wrote, "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep (die)."  The doctrine of death can be especially developed from 1 Corinthians 15, the resurrection chapter.

1. Death is Inevitable
"For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality." (1 Corinthians 15:53) It is not morbid to accept the fact that all die. The death rate is the same the world over - one death per person (Hebrews 9:27), and there is no breaking of the appointment.

2. Death is Inexplicable  "Listen, I tell you a mystery." (1 Corinthians 15:51a) Death is a mystery. There are some things we do not understand about it and therefore cannot explain. To accept this fact is to be on our way to comfort.

3. Death is A Transition  "We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed." (1 Corinthians 15:51b) The Bible clearly tells us that there is more after this earthly life. Death is not the end; it is the entrance to heaven to those who know Jesus personally as Savior and Lord of their lives, and to those who do not know Jesus personally it is an entrance into hell. Death is not a destiny; it is a door.

4. Death Can Be Tragic  "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men." (1 Corinthians 15:19) We often hear or read of a tragic death through the news media. It may be due to the type of death or age or fame. As I prepared this I received a notice of a 38 year old minister who had passed on leaving a wife and young daughter.  When we lose a loved one there's always a sense of tragedy.

But what is not reported and often not even considered is the supreme tragedy it is to live and die and go into eternity without God. When we know Jesus personally and live a life of faith till our final breath we thank God for our life and the legacy we leave. A tragic death is ultimately not determined by the manner of one's going but by his spiritual unpreparedness at the time of his going.

5. Death Can Be Triumphant "But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:57)  Death can be triumphant, because of our personal relationship with Jesus. It is not easy to distinguish the picture of a sunset from the picture of a sunrise. To the unbeliever, death is a sunset; but to the Christian, it is a sunrise. Our victory over death, with all its appalling haunts, fears, and heartaches, is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I humbly ask you the simple question, do you know Jesus? Do you know if you were to die today where you
will spend eternity (heaven or hell?).  Do you want to be in heaven for sure?

Then why not pray this simple prayer with me, "Lord Jesus, come into my heart, I repent of all my sins, forgive me and cleanse me from all sins. Make me your dear child and give me the assurance of salvation. I choose to follow and live for you and to live according to your Word. Thank you for listening my prayer. I pray this prayer in Jesus' name. Amen!

Be encouraged today.

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Please consider the prayer in the last paragraph of the message either for the first time or to reaffirm your commitment to Christ.

M.K. Abraham was born December 17, 1908 and went to be with the Lord July 8, 2009. His son is the founder of a ministry in India called Hopegivers.

Pastor Britto & Lowell Smith

We were blessed to have some interesting visitors at our midweek service
last night. As I was preparing for the service Pastor Britto and Missionary Lowell Smith dropped in and inquired as to whether we were having a service. They both serve the Lord in India and added an interesting dimension to our Bible Study since we shared in our Bible Study the message of "The Doctrine of Death" and referenced the life of MK Abraham, a Christian from India as well.  (Pastor Britto did not know Abraham personally.)

Pastor Britto shared of his service for Christ, his times of persection, and being beaten up by radical Hindus for sharing Gospel literature. Living here in America and escaping any physical dimension of suffering for Christ (thus far) it was heartening to fellowship with one who has endured such persecution.

They are attending various churches telling their story. Although they merely dropped in to join us for Bible Study we shared for a few minutes following the service and they told me the story of their association.

Lowell had become a Christian about 15 years ago and developed a web ministry called "Fill The Void" with online teachings. Pastor Britto, who was in ministry at the time but was discouraged, typed in "fill the void" in a search box and came across Lowell's ministry. He emailed him and thus began an interesting ministry association and friendship with Lowell visiting India several times and Pastor Britto coming to the states.  Fill The Void

"Life To The Full"

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

When I was pastoring a church in New England I received an interesting "wrong number" prior to our midweek church service one evening. Usually when a church gets a call prior to a service it's someone needing directions, asking the time of service, or a worker is delayed. I took the call hoping it was a visitor needing information.  I answered the phone by using the church name. The phone was silent for a moment and then a lady asked, "Is this Eagan's Package Store?"  (A "Package Store" in Massachusetts is a liquor store.)

I said "No, we are a church and we offer just the opposite of a package store."  We clarified the number she dialed which was off by one digit, and she said she thought it was interesting what I said about being the opposite.  I gave her a brief witness, hopefully giving her something to think about.  I ended the conversation by pointing out all the heartache I had seen alcohol wreak. I don't know whether she ever called Eagan's or not!  And I don't that she ever visited our church.

The world's offerings vary, but all lead down the same disastrous path.  The work of the "thief" continues today.  We don't have to look far to see the horrible destruction do we?  The enemy's thievery, killing, and destruction are ruining lives everyday.

The massive alcohol industry is but one example.  Those of us who enjoy sports on TV are inundated with commercials promoting drinking. The booze industry, with a huge advertising budget has some of the "best" commercials on TV. The glitzy ads with beautiful young models
proclaim that "this is the life", but we who know the full truth realize this is a lie.

Truth in advertising should require a scene from a deadly DWI traffic accident such as the one we passed on Sunday where a man, 41 years old, plowed through a cornfield near our home and was killed instantly.  Hours earlier he had been driven home by concerned people who recognized his drunken condition.  Unfortunately the keys were still within reach.

Abused spouses and children, homicides, shattered families and early deaths are but a few of the consequences of alcoholism.  The thief takes all, bankrupting us of that which God is willing to give in abundance – His love, guidance, forgiveness and friendship.  The striking contrast to the thief's objective which is to take life is seen in the person of Jesus who gives life, even His own life on our behalf.  He told His listeners, "I am the good Shepherd.  The good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" (10:11).

Jesus continues to actively work in all who will receive His offering of life to the full.  He said "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."  The Greek word translated "to the full" ("abundantly" in the KJV) conveys the sense "superabundant" (in quantity), or "superior" (in quality).

Don't settle for the paltry, destructive substitutes from the thief.  Are you living for Jesus Christ today?  He alone offers life to the full and that offer continues to be freely extended to all who call upon the Name of the Lord to be saved.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily prayer: Father, thank You for Jesus who came that we might have life and have it in abundance.  We're grateful for Your grace that teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.  We're thankful that Jesus gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own.  We realize that the one who sows to please the sinful nature from that nature reaps destruction, therefore we choose to sow to please the spiritual nature and from that nature reap eternal life.  Keep us faithful in doing so.  Amen.

Marvin with Shawna and Sharon
Over twenty years ago we hosted Marvin, a young child from Guatamala who had a severe throat disease that severely limited his breathing. Twice he came to the States for medical care and for surgery in Erie, PA. We once went to see him and his family in Guatemala. He is shown here in his Sunday best with two young sisters in our church in northern Pennsylvania. We still stay in touch with Shawna and Sharon, who of course are both now grown with children of their own.

Marvin & his son, Melvin
Several years ago we reconnected with Marvin through Daily Encouragement Net, which essentially provides previous associations in life an easy way to find us, especially Brooksyne. (Try googling Brooksyne to see what I mean.)

Marvin is now married with a child and is faithfully serving the Lord. Today he sent us a photo of his son Melvin dressed as a clown for a  children's church activity.

Today's photo prompts a recall of 3 John 1:3,4.

Note:
Looks like Marvin is a Yankee's fan!

Incredible cornMore country blessings: Last night I was sitting on our front porch watching the sunset when our neighbor drove up in his pickup, backed up into our driveway, and shared some of his freshly picked sweet corn with us. We gladly took it and also shared with our next door neighbor! We are having a great harvest this summer due to plentiful rain.

Yesterday's corn prep message prompted a memory for Sue, local friend and DE reader: "I vividly remember my mother freezing sweet corn. Mainly because she had this big vat of corn that she had sliced off the cob on the kitchen table, and my parakeet was flying around and made a 'deposit' into the corn as it flew over. My mom was not happy!!!"
