The powdery snow is drifting, covering our road and driveway.

"The Blessing Of Family Harmony"

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, 'Don't quarrel on the way!'" (Genesis 45:24).
"God places the lonely in families" (Psalm 68:6).

This summer we are having a family reunion in the Poconos for my mom's side of the family. Our reunions began in 1975 after my grandparents died. My aunts and uncles were intent that they and their children remain connected with the extended family. That entire generation has now passed on but we cousins, a few in their 80's, continue to gather annually. There had been sixteen of us but our oldest cousin passed away several years ago.

To enjoy all the benefits God intends for a family unit they must get along with each other. In our workplace chaplaincy we regularly deal with those who have family disharmony. Today I spoke to a man who has been estranged from his brother for 18 years. Another man wept as he told me he had never met his father. Brooksyne spoke to an employee who never met his birth father till he was 35 years old. He was raised by his stepfather, but sadly he never accepted him as his own so this individual struggled to fit in and eventually left home at a very young age, took to the streets and you can pretty well imagine the rest of the story.

"My Three Sons"
A part of honoring our parents is having a harmonious relationship among the siblings. I came across this photo to the right of my two older brothers and me at a family reunion in 2002 in Colorado. It scanned rather grainy but it's especially meaningful that on the back my mom had written and underlined "My 3 Sons." It was among her large collection of fridge photos.

Now that both she and Dad are with the Lord I believe that I, along with my brothers and sister, honor them with our continued efforts at living in harmony with each other.

Joseph is one of the Bible's greatest characters. Many have noted numerous similarities in his life and that of Christ.

But Joseph came from a family characterized by disharmony. His jealous brothers planned to kill him, but after some sibling bickering they chose to sell him as a slave. He ended up in Egypt where he had a series of victories and some major setbacks. After thirteen years he serves as the Prime Minister to Pharaoh while preparing the nation for a famine by storing grain for seven fruitful years.

Joseph with brothersWhen the famine finally hits, under Joseph's leadership the nation was prepared. However the famine affected other nations in the region, as well, and Joseph's brothers eventually came to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph recognized his brothers immediately but they didn't recognize him. The events described in the next several chapters tug at the heart strings but also include some "gotcha" moments. Eventually Joseph reveals to his brothers who he is; they have a wonderful reunion and he sends them back to bring his father and entire household to Egypt.

As Joseph sends them off he gives them a departing word of exhortation:
"Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, 'Don't quarrel on the way!'" I smile as I read it and consider how appropriate and timeless his words were, given human nature.

It's a great lesson for all of us as we journey here below. Perhaps you also were born into a dysfunctional family - an all too common occurrence for many or dare I say, most, considering the times. I ask you, is there an application from Joseph's story and that of his family, that might help deal with matters of the heart when it comes to you and your family members. If so, please apply and trust God for a favorable outcome. It's our prayer that your family may experience the blessing of harmony.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, You've created us as individual human beings and by Your design You placed us in families.  Within one family unit there are many different personalities, giftings, and varying interests. Thank you for the important things we learn about sharing, assuming responsibility, working, loving, and forgiving.  Help us to do our part in keeping our family of primary importance and taking the time to appreciate those dear ones who make up our family.  It is a blessing that only You can give and it is a privilege that we must never take for granted. Make each of us a blessing as we give unreservedly of our love to one another. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Amish youth on way to youth meeting
Snowy winter scene in Lancaster County, PA

"Pure Eyes"

Audio not available for this message

"Your eyes are too pure to look on evil" (Habakkuk 1:13a). Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong"
(1 Corinthians 16:13). “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people” (Ephesians 5:3). "Keep yourself pure" (1 Timothy 5:22). "All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure" (1 John 3:3).

For many years we've selected music to supplement our daily encouragement messages using spiritual songs available as a link to a YouTube video. Perhaps I mistakenly changed a setting or perhaps it's a recent change to YouTube's formatting but now the song I select is followed by songs that may or may not be related.  It seems that YouTube doesn't prefer my style of music nor does it discern my preference of content!

Yesterday a song played that I had chosen and I walked out of the room. Upon re-entering I heard a different song playing with content
that bristled my spirit. It's not one I would choose to listen to in my home, the car or elsewhere.

"O be careful little eyes what you see" is a little chorus many of us recall singing in our childhood. In fact some of you could sing the words below even though you may have not heard the song for many years. Though written for young children it also has a very grownup message.

O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see

The song has various similar expressions:

Oh, be careful little ears what you hear
Oh, be careful little hands, what you do
Oh, be careful little mouth, what you say
Oh, be careful little mind what you think

We consider the temptations common to children in their childhood. This is also a very simple song with a timeless message for people of all ages. It's a song to tuck away in our hearts as children that will continue to influence us in our adulthood when tempted to listen or repeat gossip, to be profane or lie. We're reminded to use our hands in helping others rather than hurting or stealing from them. And it also includes the message of keeping our minds pure, which guides our actions, both positive and negative.

But now consider the flood of temptations assaulting the eyes, ears and minds of both children and adults. Before the accessibility to smart phones, computers, and many such devices parents were more informed and able to observe their children's "wanderings". Remember the days when there was one telephone shared by all in a common place where you knew who your child was talking to. Now it's nearly impossible to know what your child accesses in the privacy of his or her room, school, library, etc.

Habakkuk is one of the lesser-known
Old Testament prophets. In fact he has one of the shortest books with only three chapters. In today's first verse he makes a timeless observation about the unchangeable God.

"Your eyes are too pure to look on evil." That's a great verse to ponder. The specific evil that Habakkuk had in mind is likely different than the evil today but the same principle applies.  Today evil takes on many forms and is as prevalent today as it was in Habakkuk's time. It certainly is far more accessible due to our technological age.  Evil abounds but I refuse to process that dark thought without following up with the reassuring Scripture, "Where sin abounds grace doth much more abound." Hallelujah!

If we say that we love God we must dutifully walk in integrity and moral purity.

Jerry Bridges writes, "Our minds are mental greenhouses where unlawful thoughts, once planted, are nurtured and watered before being transplanted into the real world of unlawful actions... These actions are savored in the mind long before they are enjoyed in reality. The thought life, then, is our first line of defense in the battle of self-control."

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we ask for clean hands, a pure mind, and a steadfast heart that follows hard after You. Temptation regularly knocks at our door, but with Your Holy Spirit residing within, we have the will and desire to turn it away.  We don't want even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, or anything considered improper for Your holy people. It is through Christ that we can live such a life above reproach and honoring to You. Amen.

"Lesson From A Football"

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"He will roll you up tightly like a ball and throw you into a large country" (Isaiah 22:18).

FootballHere in America there's a lot of interest leading up to the Super Bowl, as well as plenty of intrigue regarding properly inflated footballs. I read an article about the Wilson Sporting Goods football factory in Ada, Ohio that's made all the official footballs for the Super Bowl since the first one in 1966. That's a factory tour I'd sure enjoy!

I played football in Junior High and actually made a touchdown, though the play was called back. Truth be told, I heard the whistle blow but ran fifty yards into the end zone anyway (I guess I had built too much momentum or thought I might be the new, young athlete who was the exception to the rule). Later I broke my ankle playing football in an open lot beside my friend, David Simpson's yard, in Belton Missouri. This ended my football career and may just be why my name isn't associated with football. It is associated with the Weber Grill, but unfortunately it has nothing to do with me.

I still like to toss footballs back and forth with friends on occasion. For that matter I enjoy playing catch with about any type of ball. It seems anywhere you go on this terrestrial ball* you will find people enjoying a sport that uses some type of ball, most notably soccer.

In addition to football I have enjoyed sports using baseballs, basketballs, tennis balls and golf balls. In college I played racquetball and handball and when I have the opportunity still enjoy the sport that uses the ping pong ball. Since we married in 1976 Brooksyne took up an interest in some of the same sports, especially tennis, which we played for many years.

Tennis ballI have even used balls as illustrations in sermons, including the tennis ball story, one of my most embarrassing ministry moments (a link to that story is below.)

I wondered if I might find the word, "ball" mentioned in the Bible so I checked it out using the handy concordance and found it referenced only once in the rather obscure verse that is our daily text. I hadn't noticed this verse before preparing today's message although I have surely read it. Most versions use the word "ball" in this text including the venerable KJV (see here).

It is from the book of Isaiah written about seven hundred years before Christ. It is actually alluding to God in an act of judgment. The phrase "
roll you up tightly like a ball" makes me picture another seasonal ball quite available in our parts now, the snowball.

Not only does the text refer to the ball but also the act of throwing, "
throw you into a large country". Apparently people have been playing some type of ball for a long time as the Scriptures use illustrations that would have connected with the initial readers!

OK, so I should get to some exposition here. Most don't like passages dealing with judgment but the Scriptures have a lot of them. Today's verse "large country" likely refers to the impending Assyrian conquest. Sometimes God's promised judgment seems quite distant as we understand time but God always keeps His promises as mentioned in Proverbs 30:5, "God keeps every promise He makes".

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 is a section that provides warnings from Israel's history. Verse 11 states, "These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come."

Today let us resolve to learn from the failures of past generations such as those in the age of Isaiah and seek to
faithfully serve the Lord all our days.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we thank You for the record of Scripture that not only encourages, guides, and instructs us, but also provides examples of those who choose to follow or disobey Your commands. The consequence of their actions further instructs us about Your promise of judgment. We also see Your provision of Jesus who mercifully saves us from the awful mess we make of our lives when we forsake Your commands. Though technology has advanced exponentially with each passing generation we find that human behavior remains the same as that from the time of Adam and Eve. We are great sinners and You provide a great Saviour for which we are thankful. In living for Christ we are able to heed the warnings written in Scripture and experience the peace and blessing that comes in walking faithfully with You, our Father and our God. We love You and thank You for Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen.

* Do you recognize the hymn that uses the phrase "on this terrestrial ball"? See below for answer!

Did you know there is actually a song using a football analogy with a "spiritual" meaning? I recall when Joyce Reed from our congregation in New England told me about a song she recalled singing as a youth in the fifties called "DROP KICK ME JESUS"  Video

I recall another humorous memory Joyce shared. She was sitting with some youth during a testimony service in church and an older lady shared a report concerning an x-ray taken to determine if she had a brain tumor. The youth chuckled at the wording, "They took an x-ray of my head and didn't find anything."
