"Duct Tape For The Soul"

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3).

Many local businesses in our area are owned by Christians and we are accustomed to seeing signs and Scripture verses on businesses proclaiming an aspect of faith. Each Christmas and Easter our local community Merchandiser papers often have the entire front pages devoted to the seasonal spiritually related theme.

Paul B. Zimmerman hardware store
I enjoy reading ad fliers from hardware stores and earlier this month I received a sales flyer from the Paul B. Zimmerman Hardware store near Ephrata Pennsylvania. Among the ads displaying drain cleaner, hinges, cable ties and other items for sale is a display box that includes a Scripture verse under the heading "Duct Tape For The Soul."

Duct tape t-shirt
As a home workshop enthusiast I find two items indispensable to a complete workshop:  Duct tape and WD-40.  (I suppose I should add bungee cords, as well.)  Many years ago we were eating in a diner near Sand Springs, Oklahoma and I saw a big burly construction worker type man with this slogan emblazoned on his sweatshirt, "WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH THE TOUGH USE DUCT TAPE."

I learned early on in life the many virtues of duct tape from my dad.  It's amazing how much can be fixed with it. I've even seen well-worn Bibles covers that Christians refuse to part with bound together with duct tape!

I think of duct tape when I consider our daily verse.  The Hebrew word for "bind" (chabash) has the sense "to bind firmly."  I'm glad God's binding is not a flimsy variety.  This same word is used by Isaiah in describing the mission of the coming Messiah when he states, "He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted" (Isaiah 61:1).

Residents at a nursing home chapel service
What a joy to personally experience this healthful binding in my own life and as a minister of the Gospel to help others experience it as well. Yesterday I spoke to a group at a nursing home service and used this verse as my main text. I consider the accumulative aspect of brokenheartedness experienced in that senior group throughout their lifetime. Of course many had lost a spouse in addition to their parents, siblings, and in some cases their own children.  There are inevitable times of brokenheartedness experienced through life, and more so as the aging progresses.

Today are you brokenhearted?  Do you have some spiritual wounds?  I've got good news for you!  God has not changed.  He still cares.  And He still acts. "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer:  Father, we're so thankful that when we mess things up You don't throw up Your arms, shake Your finger at us and say, "You made the mess. Now you fix it."  Plenty of others might do so, but Your compassion far exceeds Your judgment, for You did send Jesus to condemn, but rather to save us from our own sin and folly.  We do lots of temporary "fixing up" in our lives that comes unraveled again or needs ongoing repair.  But when we lay our broken hearts before You, You pick up the fragile pieces and restore us spiritually and emotionally.  Thank You for binding up our wounds and pouring in Your ointment of healing for our sin sick soul.  Only You, Father, can heal the body and spirit.  Once we are touched by Your healing hand, we can't help but reach out to others who need that touch as well.  You call us to funnel Your love and comfort to others in pain with the same comfort we ourselves receive from You when we are undergoing pain, suffering, or loss. May we faithful in doing so.  Amen.
(See 2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Duct tape witness
I saw a man wearing a t-shirt and initially the screen print photo of duct tape got my attention but then I asked him to stop so I could read the entire message. The Scripture at the bottom states:
"Having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross."

Here's another duct tape story!

John Deere Limousine
Ken Pierce is a local friend whom we often feature as the farm hand who can fix just about anything. Most recently he was over to our house when our well pump stopped working and sure enough he identified and replaced the malfunctioning part.  When Ken got married in 2002 he and his new wife Nila didn't travel from the church to the reception in a stretch limo, like so many do today.  Instead Darrel, a farmer friend, pulled them on a tractor in a hay wagon!

Duct tape tire repair kit
Lee, another friend, had some fun with a makeshift tire repair using duct tape!

In the message I referred to an ad by the Paul B. Zimmerman Hardware Company in their February sales flier. Here's the flier I referred to, although it may change soon to March, but I suspect "Duct Tape For The Soul" is a monthly feature!  If you happen to read the February spot Berean readers may notice they do need to proofread the Scripture reference.

"Thanks For Praying"

"Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should" (Ephesians 6:19-20).

I heard a compelling story from a friend named Bill that reminded me of the importance of prayer. Many years earlier he met a man and had a burden to pray for him. Bill didn't have an opportunity to share a verbal witness but prayed for this man over the years, though there was no evidence as far as he could determine that he had any spiritual interest. Five years later Bill was visiting a church as a representative of a mission. In the congregation was that very man he had been praying for (who had no idea he would be there or even had any association with that type of church). As they shared together following the service the man expressed how God was working in his life as a follower of Christ.

Today as you're reading this devotional and have an interest in the things of God, remember, somebody prayed for you. Actually many people have. You will easily recall some of them as you read this, others you may not even be aware of. Faithful people spent time on their knees lifting your name up to God. Pause, if you can, right now to consider several and thank God for them. Some may be in heaven, but I'm sure God has a way of getting the message to them! Others are living and may need a brief, but earnest word of thanks from you for their vital investment in your life.  It will spur them on to prayerfully invest in even more lives.

Paul in prisonIn our daily text the apostle Paul writes from a prison cell as he shares his prayer request with the Ephesian believers. We have a lot more record of Paul's prayers for others than requests he makes with regard to his own needs, probably because he includes them in his correspondence to the churches! Yet Paul was aware of how dependent he was on the prayers of other believers.

Surely there were many who prayed for his salvation over the years, especially those to whom he persecuted. The martyr Stephen, in his dying plea, prayed for those who opposed him, which certainly included Saul who gave consent for his death. "While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he fell on his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.'" Immediately following his prayer he died (or as the Scripture reads, he "fell asleep" (Acts 7:59,60).

I wonder if Saul was within hearing distance of that extremely generous prayer; certainly God was. Stephen's prayer was in concert with many others who were pleading in prayer for Saul's salvation when he was "still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples." Surely Ananias prayed when he went on his most memorable personal evangelism visit following Saul's conversion. Barnabas doubtlessly prayed often for the young convert.

The main focus in Paul's prayer request to the Ephesians is very instructive. He didn't request prayer for a quick release from prison, although I am sure he would have gladly welcomed that. He didn't ask for better food or more comfortable living conditions. He wasn't insisting on bodybuilding equipment for the prison weight room.  I'm sure his 24/7 heavy chains built plenty of muscle every time he moved!

No, he asked prayer concerning his ministry of witness for the Lord, that "whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel."

Today I encourage you to keep on praying. It's wonderful when we see the evidence of our prayers but I believe there are many, many answered prayers we will not see until we reach the other side. Some of you have prayed for us and continue to do so. Thanks so very much! We are where we are today because you, and many others, have taken the time to pray.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily Prayer: Father, we are so grateful for the power of prayer and its positive affect in our lives.  Yet we confess that we don't avail ourselves to Your prescribed means of communication nearly as often as we should.  Jesus quoted Scripture when refuting Satan's temptations in the wilderness experience and He spent time in intense prayer when He needed strength, courage, and faith for the trials that lay ahead.  We likewise pray for our brothers and sisters, that their faith in You will mature and that they will remain faithful in times of testing. We pray for ourselves that we will stand firm and remain confident in our Christian faith as we oppose the evil forces in this world.  In the name of Jesus we ask these things. Amen.

Our conviction is that most of the expressions of service for Christ are taking place unheralded in scores of smaller settings all around the world. We witnessed such an expression yesterday.

"God's Plans"

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future"  (Jeremiah 29:11).

Prison exterior
Today we want to commend those involved in prison ministry. It sure is among the most sacrificial forms of ministry and is a form of direct obedience to one of Christ's commands (Matthew 25:39). Our friends Mike and Kathy Matangelo are involved in prison ministry  in North Carolina where they mentor young men in the ways of the Lord. Our friend Rick Masciantonio has led a weekly Bible Study in a state prison in Massachusetts now for over seventeen years. My chaplain supervisor Al Worthley is a veteran state prison chaplain. And finally we consider Manuel Cordero, a college friend who spent his entire ministry career as a chaplain in the federal prison system.

Prison interior
However Brooksyne and I don't have much experience in prison ministry, I suppose in part because of the patience needed regarding passing through the security and the fact that we do most ministry together. I would also find the typically high recidivism rates discouraging and we have a ministry style in which we like to have long-term relationships with those to whom we minister. We like to stay connected. But today I would like to draw a lesson from one of the times I had an opportunity to preach at a prison in York County Pennsylvania several years ago.

Prison chapel service
It turned out that preaching in a prison setting was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had in my ministry. I went with Scott Reynold, the regular prison chapel volunteer. We had to go through some rigorous security to get into the prison and then down to the chapel. After setting up for the service the inmates came all at one time in single file wearing their jump suits as several correctional officers watched them.

The chapel meeting room was all concrete, including the ceiling, so you can imagine the sound dynamics. There weren't enough chairs in the room so some of the men just sat on the floor. Prior to beginning the service the room was very loud as the men talked together but when I told them that we were preparing to enter into worship the chapel grew very quiet and still.

Stack of old hymnals
We distributed the well-worn hymnals and asked if they had any favorites. Well they sure did and we could have sung all night I suppose. I asked if someone would help lead the songs and a big man jumped to the front who sang like Ron Kenoly and my, did we ever sing! That concrete room just resonated with the enthusiastic voices. We concluded with the classic hymn, "Amazing Grace."

I preached a message to the prisoners about having a hope and a future based on Jeremiah 29:11. The message I shared with those men I share with each Daily Encouragement reader today. The Lord has declared, "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Isaiah 29:11
Based upon God's unchanging character this is a great promise that we can all accept and rejoice in.  God has a wonderful plan for our lives on this earth regardless of what we have done before we came to repentance and fully surrender our lives to Christ.  Jesus calls this the "abundant life." (John 10:10).  In His abundance toward us He proclaims, "freedom for the captives. He bestows a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair" (Isaiah 61:1,3).

But the best part will be the eternal future. That's so beautifully expressed in the final verse of Amazing Grace, "When we've been there ten thousand years…"  The greatest experiences of this life will not even compare to the future in heaven God has planned for us!  Paul exhorts us to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

We may have little sense of the great future God has planned for us who truly love Him. We only see the smaller picture. Some of the prisoners may only sense their current plight and feel such hopelessness and despair. I wanted them to see beyond that as I ministered that day.  The same may be true for some of you reading our message today.

God sees our hope and future far beyond what we see through the maze of life in our temporary existence. If we saw the big picture such as our heavenly Father does, we would view the intertwined dark and light colors of our life's tapestry with perpetual rejoicing.  Rejoice in Him today as together we declare the awesomeness of our God as He is fulfilling His plan in our lives!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily Prayer: Father, though we see through a glass darkly we're so glad that You have a perfect plan for our future.  You want to prosper us and never to harm us.   We do not throw away our confidence based upon what we see, but instead we choose to live by faith, since faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Help us to be faithful as we patiently wait to see Your plans fulfilled in our lives. We pray for those who minister in the prisons.  Grant them power and grace, as they present a transforming message of hope, forgiveness, and endurance through Christ. We pray for the prisoners whose lives have been transformed, that You will enable them to reach other inmates who need to be saved from their sins.  And lastly we pray for the people of New Zealand as they await word regarding their loved ones who remain trapped in the ruins of the recent earthquake.  May Your grace and favor be evident in the midst of devastation and extremely difficult circumstances we pray.  Amen.

PS: There's much more I could share about the prison meeting.  There is an incredible lack of any pretentiousness among the prisoners. The men remained fully attentive and engaged during the entire message. During my sermon a loud buzzer went off as I preached followed by a terse announcement that the movie was starting. I paused and asked if any of the men wanted to go to the movie. The resounding answer was "No".  They seemed to just soak in the message and many expressed earnest appreciation as they left. I challenged the men to accept the Lord as their Savior and to tell me if they had done so.  A man approached me afterwards and told me he had!

One of the most touching moments was another man who spoke about a point I made referring to those on the outside who cared about them such as their parents, spouse, or children. He asked, "What do I do if no one cares about me?" This is one of the most difficult issues to deal with as most of us have others who care about us.  I briefly assured this man of God's care.

I was searching for a song on Isaiah 29:11 (a verse from the Jewish and Christian Scriptures) that I recall from the Integrity Scripture Memory Series and the top search results on YouTube for Isaiah 29:11 are all related to Islam!!!

I was unable to find the song I was looking for but in the course of searching I found a beautiful song from that series based on Psalm 103  Video
