"Thou Changest Not"

"But You remain the same, and Your years will never end" (Psalm 102:27). "I the LORD do not change"
(Malachi 3:6). "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).

"Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
there is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not:
as Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be."

XT computerChange is everywhere. One of the most dramatic examples of change is technology. My first computer was a used one I bought in the early nineties, an xt as I recall. The computer on which I am writing this message is many times faster than those early computers and yet it costs me far less. That's a good change!

Bob Deffinbaugh writes, "Some changes are welcome; some are not. A great comfort for the Christian living in these turbulent, troubled times is the confidence we have that God does not change. Theologians refer to this attribute of God as the "immutability of God." God does not change. This truth is referred to a number of times in the Scriptures and even in the hymns we sing in church."

Another year is coming to an end and another is about to begin. 2013 will arrive at midnight and of course we are not sure what to expect. What evil plots do the terrorists have planned? What will happen in the Middle East?  How will the economy affect our personal life? What will the political changes bring?
Will we fall off the fiscal cliff or how about the moral cliff? * What changes will come in my life and family?

Of greatest importance, will this be the year the events described in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 take place?

The end of a year is a great time to consider life's inevitable transitions and the Scripture truths in the daily texts provide great assurance for these transitions. It's said that change is certain and from our perspective this is true. There will be change in our world and in your life in 2013. That's for sure.

The Psalmist is speaking of God in the first daily text when he writes, "But you remain the same." This speaks of the theological attribute known as the immutability of God, which is taught throughout the Bible. The immutability of God means that God is unchanging. More specifically, "God is unchanging in His character, will, and covenant promises."

C.H. Spurgeon writes, "Consider what thou owest to His immutability. Though thou hast changed a thousand times, He has not changed once; though thou hast shifted thy intentions, and thy will, yet He has not once swerved from His eternal purpose, but still has held thee fast."

God declares in Malachi 3:6, "I the LORD do not change." Hebrews 13:8 proclaims that
, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Many of us have found rich assurance in these lines from the ageless hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness",

"Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not.
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be."

The latter part of the first daily text states, "And Your years will never end."  This speaks of the attribute known as the eternality of God. From eternity past, to every changing moment we call "now", and throughout eternity future He is. Very soon this year will end and one day our physical existence on earth will end, but His years will never end. And the remarkable blessing is that He has made provision for us to live with Him for all eternity and thus our years will never end!

There are many changes on earth we may dread, but the certainty of a future in heaven with the King of kings is a change that fills us with glorious hope as we enter the new year of 2013. As we go through life's transitions let us place our growing faith and steadfast hope in God's ever-faithful care! In doing so His grace will sustain us and His Word will guide us through another year.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we are so very thankful for all the blessings we enjoyed over the past year of 2012. There were many opportunities for rejoicing and plenty of opportunities for trusting. Your mercies are renewed daily and Your provision is experienced in our lives each moment of every day. We seek You for guidance in the new year and growth in our daily Christian walk. Though we cannot know the future we can have assurance of Your faithfulness because You are a God that does not change. Every promise You've made is true as we have seen in the Biblical records. This gives us reason to trust You for the dawning of a new year where we will once again experience Your guiding presence in our daily lives. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Amen.

* Those living here in America and following the news are aware of a lot of discussion about the "fiscal cliff", which has to do with tax increases and spending cuts. I have been considering the moral cliff, the consequences of open rebellion as a people against God seen in the rampant increase in what the Bible calls "the deeds of the flesh". Galatians 5:19-21 states, "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Note: Stephen's brother has been visiting the last couple of days and thus today's encouragement message is delivered to our email list much later Friday in the evening.

"He Knows What Is Ahead"

"Be joyful in hope" (Romans 12:12). "Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure" (1 John 3:2,3).

I don't know about tomorrow;
I just live from day to day.
I don't borrow from its sunshine
For its skies may turn to gray.

When Brooksyne and I got married in 1976 we lived near a small village named Pleasant Hope about twenty-five miles north of Springfield. In fact our very first joint checking account was opened at the Bank of Pleasant Hope. I don't know the basis of this name but the names of many geographical locations have a religious significance, as they were settled by devout people of faith.

Wouldn't it be great if all problems from 2012 disappeared as we turned the calendar page from December 2012 to January 2013?  Well, you and I know it doesn't work that way. Some things will improve; others will worsen.

I don't worry o'er the future,
For I know what Jesus said.
And today I'll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

An interesting village name here in Lancaster County is Mount Hope.
Since devoted religious immigrants settled this area in the 18th century it likely represents an expression of faith. Hymn writer Ira Stanphill, who at one time was a pastor here in Lancaster County, wrote the great gospel classic, "I know who holds tomorrow." The entire song is an expression of the fixed hope we have in Christ and throughout our message today we want to share the lyrics.

I don't know about tomorrow;
It may bring me poverty.
But the one who feeds the sparrow,
Is the one who stands by me.

Hope is one of the greatest of God's blessings. Our relationship with God always involves faith, and active faith in Him always leads to hope. When our faith in God is weak, inactive or even non-existent we have either no hope or a misplaced hope.

We have a fixed hope that is the heritage of all true followers of Christ. We are included in the "beloved" that John writes to who are "Now (present tense) the children of God."

As children of God there's a lot about our future, both the immediate and distant, which is very unclear to us, much of which we don't understand. I believe this in part is the sense of the expression from our text, "it has not appeared as yet what we will be."

But the aged apostle John writes with much certainty about the future, "We know that when He appears..." His future appearance, although mocked and scorned by the world, is a fixed reality.

At that time "We will be like Him, and we will see Him just as He is!" Elsewhere the Scriptures refer to the return of Christ as the "Blessed Hope" and it truly is.

As we prepare for a new year I am so blessed and challenged by the latter phrase in our daily text, "And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." This hope is not a mere wish but an absolute certainty and leads to an unshakable confidence concerning the future promise of God.

And the path that is my portion
May be through the flame or flood;
But His presence goes before me
And I'm covered with His blood.

As a result of this we, as God's children, will purify ourselves because our Lord is absolutely pure. A commentary notes, "The Christian life is a process of becoming more and more like Christ. This process will not be complete until we see Christ face to face, but knowing that this is our ultimate destiny should motivate us to purify ourselves. To purify means to keep morally straight, free from the corruption of sin. God also purifies us, but there is action we must take to remain morally fit."

This action, I believe, is staying true to the pure doctrine of Scripture, not just reading it but living it. We must be vigilant in keeping God's standards as our rule book, rather than the ever changing standards of this world that reflect people's human nature rather than the spiritual nature that has been redeemed and refined by the inerrant Holy Word of God.

Genuine Christ-directed faith leads to a real hope and that leads to an amazing, unexplainable ability to rejoice whatever the circumstances. Surely some of you are facing very trying circumstances as you read this. Today I encourage you to focus on the hope we have in Christ and I end with a thought-provoking saying I really like: "Man's way leads to a hopeless end, but God's way leads to an endless hope."  Amen!!!

Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we share the sentiment Paul expressed when he wrote, "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men." Our hope is not limited to this earthly existence, but rather it flourishes and yields growing anticipation as we contemplate the blessed future event of our Lord's soon return.  Being aware of our unworthiness and inclination to sin gives us all the more motivation to fix our hope on You. We want to set our affections on things above, not on things of this earth, for we are dead to the world and our life is hidden with Christ through You, Father. Purify our thoughts, actions, and conversation as we with renewed determination fix our hope on the Everlasting One. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Strasburg Railroad train 12/28/12
Today my brother Pat and I drove through Lancaster County and were momentarily delayed by a train on the Strasbug Railroad. It's a pleasant sight to watch the steam engine pass by!

We also stopped by to visit an Amish friend. Pat was curious about a new show he had heard about called the Amish Mafia and wanted a perspective regarding the show from a genuine Lancaster Amishman.  We asked Jesse if he knew "L
ebanon Levi", one of the main characters in the show, and indeed he did. Years earlier he had ran around with him. He is no longer Amish and apparently has turned to acting. However as we described the show Jesse verified what I had also read in local reports that the show was overall fiction and the Amish really don't appreciate the way it portrays their lifestyle.

Christmas candles

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Blest Be The Tie That Binds"

"But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another" (1 John 1:7).

Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

Candle lighting service
My favorite part of a Christmas Eve service is the candlelighting ceremony. As our service was concluding on Monday evening we gathered in a large circle around our sanctuary. Pastor lit his candle from the Advent candle and then lit the candle the next person was holding. One by one the candles lit up around the room until we fully completed the circle. It took awhile but we sang Christmas carols throughout the lighting until the room was filled with the warm glow of candlelight.

For the last twelve years we have attended a rural church that has a long heritage. Although we have had short term stints as an interim pastor this church has been our base. We really appreciate the multi-generational aspect of our congregation.

As we sang the carols and awaited the circle to be all aglow I began to observe the people we fellowship with. What I saw could easily be replicated in other churches from our past as well as the church you presently attend.

I scanned my memory bank over the last twelve years and considered the blessing of overcoming faith in the genuine people of God. However the following is not just our local church but a composite of our ministry, now over 35 years of Christmas Eve candlelight circles, as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Some are fresh observations from the other night, others are from my reservoir of memories going back many years. I purposefully mix the two settings in the interest of confidentiality and use fictitious names in some cases.

Before our Father's throne
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one
Our comforts and our cares.

I looked over and saw Jim, a young man whom I recall going through several years of rebellion as an older teenager, who "disappeared" from the church for several years. He's now married, faithfully attending church with his wife and serving on the board!

Across the sanctuary I spotted Irene, a woman who has been through some very deep valleys, including being abandoned by her husband, but she remains faithful, and God has provided for her needs.

Charles, a cancer survivor stood tall amidst his family members, now three years in remission and daily thanking God for the blessing of good health that he once took for granted.

We share each other's woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.

Jason and Debbie were present; a couple who had a very rocky period in their marriage. It warmed my heart to see him light her candle just as they did in their wedding ceremony. They've persevered and by God's grace are rebuilding their marriage.

I saw William who years earlier had confided in me his struggle in overcoming pornography. He wants his life to honor God and for several years has experienced freedom.

As I looked around the circle I saw a number of grown children, now with their own young children, home for Christmas joining their parents in worshiping God with the church body on Christmas Eve.

When we asunder part,
It gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.

I smiled as I saw a young couple, Peter and Jen, whose marriage ceremony I conducted  a number of years ago; there with their infant son, an answer to prayer. On the other side of us was another young couple, Mike and JoAnna. It seems it was not that long ago that I conducted their wedding, but they now have three children. Adoree', their pre-school daughter, filled the room with her booming child's voice as she sang out, "O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord."

I observed a recent widow, Martha, who for many years stood next to her husband during this service. Now she stands among her support team who are seeing her through this lonely transition.

Joe, an old World War 2 vet who had a laryngectomy many years ago, belted out the Christmas songs through his mechanical larynx. The voice was rough but his joyful countenance was priceless and contagious.

This glorious hope revives
Our courage by the way;
While each in expectation lives,
And longs to see the day.

I saw a couple, Jeff and Linda, who many years earlier, were delivered from a life of alcohol and drugs. It happened before I knew them and due to the change in their life it's practically impossible for me to see them in that kind of lifestyle! They've been such a blessing to others over the years.

Grace and Earl, an older couple who stood in our circle, lost their young adult son in a car accident caused by a drunk driver many years ago. As God enabled them they reached out to the drunk driver who had killed their son.

Dave is standing beside his wife, Sandy, who sings as she sits in her wheel chair. For many years Sandy has endured the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis but they both demonstrate such overcoming faith and endurance.

From sorrow, toil and pain,
And sin, we shall be free,
And perfect love and friendship reign
Through all eternity.

Today's text states "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another." Our fellowship with each other is ultimately our common decision to walk together through steep mountains and dark valleys as the light of Jesus illuminates our path one step at a time.

Someday all sorrow, toil and pain will be replaced with unending joy and freedom from sin. Our love and friendship will reign through all eternity as our hearts are forever united in Christian love.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we thank You for the band of Christian brothers and sisters that circle the globe who are among the redeemed, overcoming life's obstacles, and giving testimony to Your faithful work in their lives. We uphold each other in prayer and lend support to those who have need, as together we walk in the light of Your holy Word. Thank You for the fellowship of believers that encourages us in our daily Christian walk. Amen.

Our other blogs:
"A Daily Prayer" - A blog simply posting the daily prayer. We keep this up each day since it's merely the prayer from the Daily Encouragement Net message!
"A Little Foolishness" - Humor/satire blog (a great outlet for non-serious writing but at times with a subtle message!) (Note: This material is satire!)
"Clear Minded" - Longer, periodic articles on specific issues impacting the faithful believer and church. (Actually this is my intent but I haven't done much with it!)
"Hymns of Hope" - Brooksyne along with two friends made a CD using classic hymns. Brooksyne tells the background story of the 11 hymns. All of these songs are also available for download on the site.

Personal Mission Statement
"I am created by God to bring Him glory. Through God's Son Jesus Christ I have been redeemed and I make it my life's goal to please the Lord. My mission in life is to honor God through my faith and obedience and to prepare myself and all whom I may influence for eternity."
