"Faithfully Administering God's Grace"

"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10).

Whiteboard witnessMike is a friend in one of the companies we serve as chaplains. He is a follower of Christ and seeks to let his light shine in an interesting way. He has a small whiteboard in his work area that he regularly changes with a thought-provoking, spiritually-oriented message. Since he oversees a tool area the messages generally relate to what the service men who work in his department can relate to. He is seeking in his own way to faithfully administer God's grace.

I sure appreciate having a very clear job description. (It's also helpful when it's as concise as possible.) The latter part of the daily Scripture text is an excellent description of the work God has called each one of us to perform. Although we have received different gifts we are to use them to serve others. We may congregate in our churches with other believers and are sure blessed if we live in families where Christ is honored. But we are also providentially spread out so that we might take God's message of love and care to others who are not so blessed or who need a witness for Christ.

A chaplain friend I worked with shared an interesting story indicating the type of receptivity we all desire in our service for Christ. He was visiting a company and an employee inquired about what he was doing and what church he represented. The chaplain  explained that he was there to express interest and care and that the chaplains don't represent any particular local church. The man then asked him if he could tell him how he could be saved (kind of like the Philippian jailer asked in Acts 16!)!

I sure wish we got inquiries everyday such as, "What must I do to be saved?". That would be evidence of revival fires stirring in our land. No, that's not the spiritual climate of our day, but we continually look for opportunities to impress on people's hearts the need to follow Christ. I see my work as encouraging fellow Christians that I encounter and looking for opportunities to express the grace of salvation to those who are not.

Consider the various forms of God's grace. Most familiar of course is the grace of salvation. However we also continue to be recipients of and dispensers of God's grace in a multitude of ways:
  • Grace that encourages,
  • Grace that comforts,
  • Grace to overcome,
  • Grace to forgive,
  • God's marvelous grace evident in a multitude of ways.
The apostle Paul learned and passes on to us the wonderful truth that God's grace is always "sufficient" to meet our need. While praying for relief from an unspecified "thorn in the flesh" God did not (at that time anyway) remove the thorn but assured Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

How can we faithfully administer God's grace to others today?

This song has really blessed my heart for many years.  Perhaps you've sung it in your church.

Grace alone which God supplies,
Strength unknown He will provide;
Christ in us, our Cornerstone,
We will go forth in grace alone.

Every promise we can make, every prayer and step of faith,
Every difference we can make, is only by His grace.
Every mountain we will climb, every ray of hope we shine,
Every blessing left behind, is only by His grace.

Every soul we long to reach, every heart we hope to teach,
Everywhere we share His peace, is only by His grace.
Every loving word we say, every tear we wipe away,
Every sorrow left behind, is only by His grace.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:
Father, enable us to make a difference within  our families and with those whom we encounter along life's journey. May others take notice of the God-given grace by which we do our work and in the way we interact with others.  With Christ as our chief cornerstone we are stronger and more effective in all that we do because we walk not in our own strength, wisdom, or talent, but the grace of God that is at work in our lives.  We thank You in Jesus' name.  Amen.

We  purchased some nice flowers and interesting home-made planters such as our "Outhouse" planter at Glenwood Produce.

Seat planter
This planter has flowers growing out of the seat!  We usually say, "Have a seat" when you visit but Brooksyne would have my scalp if I invited you to sit on this gardener's chair.

Train planter
Like trains? I sure do! How about a train planter?  Sure to please both husband and wife!

Amish scooters against barn, Bird-In-Hand, PA 6/24/11
Evidence of a large activity!
I took this photo last week at the Lancaster Auction in Bird-In-Hand.  These scooters are used by the Amish who, at least in our area, do not use bicycles.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Faithful Friends"

"Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble" (Proverbs 25:19).

I had a visit to my dentist yesterday. An annual exam revealed some cavities and I had to go back to have them filled. Although it is more preventative to save the teeth it was also causing some pain.

Our friend Wendy works for the dentist, Dr. Dinse, so Ester went with me, not so much to care for her dad, but mostly to see Wendy!  Wendy is our former pastor's wife and a cheerful sister who lights up any room she's in.

We are blessed by having adequate access to dental care here in America, something we may easily take for granted. But I only need to muse for a few minutes of the availability of dental care in many third world countries and view a few photos of rotten teeth to remind me of this blessing!

A toothache is something I suppose all of us have experienced at some point in life. I recall a lengthy period in New England when I had a bad tooth that eventually needed extraction. I procrastinated dreading the pain and the cost but it didn't get any better. Finally I had suffered long enough and had it removed. What a blessed relief when the bad tooth was gone - my whole body felt better.

Many of you can identify with me can't you?  You've had a toothache. You've tried the Orajel and other home remedies. Perhaps you placed a heating pad on your cheek or a bag of ice. Anything to get some relief.  You finally go to the dentist. If not a bad tooth you've surely had "a lame foot" at some time in your life.  I've had both! I get the idea that Solomon was speaking from experience as well in this Proverb.

The Bible has some interesting verses about teeth. The most common reference is the "eye for eye, tooth for tooth" found numerous times in a variety of places. The most colorful reference is when Job describes his physical plight, "I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth" (Job 19:20). And here's a romantic line for men the next time you express affection to your wives: "Your teeth are like a flock of sheep coming up from the washing. Each has its twin, not one of them is alone" (Song of Solomon 6:6). Be prepared for her bewildered response to such romantic overtures!

When Stephen boldly proclaimed God's Word the unbelieving crowd reacted by gnashing their teeth.
"When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him." What a word picture describing intense anger! To a much less important degree, I can easily see in my mind's eye our 7 year old dog Roxie getting extremely annoyed at Ester's 6 month pup Mollie.  When she's had enough with Mollie's antics she growls and gnashes her teeth at her. Up until we got Mollie I never saw Roxie's full set of teeth.

The Proverb of "a bad tooth or a lame foot" is a simile to describe another condition; "reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble."  And I suspect most of us have experienced this as well.  We've felt the sharp sting and deep disappointment of disloyalty and rejection that is especially painful "in times of trouble". Job stated in the midst of his trouble, "All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me" (Job 19:19).

I've been so blessed by faithful friends but certainly have had the experience of a friend turning against me, although I choose not to focus on those painful memories.  Instead I focus on the blessing of steadfast, loyal friends of whom I have many. In this encouragement I want to consider the wonderful contribution of true and faithful friends who are there and who are reliable in the inevitable times of trouble in our lives.

I especially like lasting, reliable friends. We need good friends don't we; friends who are loyal and faithful, particularly in times of trouble.  I sure want to be known as that kind of friend. I certainly don't want someone's memories of me to be so dreadful it stirs up the painful analogy of a bad tooth or a lame foot!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:
Jesus, You are a friend that sticks closer than a brother.  We thank You also for our brothers and sisters in the faith who are often closer than our blood relations because we are joined together as a family of believers sharing common experiences and spiritual goals.  So many times we find strength and encouragement from those who bear our burdens, lend a hand, and hold us accountable for our attitudes and actions.  Thank You for loving, supportive, and reliable friends who draw us to our true source of hope and strength, especially in times of trouble. In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen.

Yesterday I asked why a particular branch of old order horse and buggy Mennonites use tractors with steel wheels (no rubber tires). The answer: Use of steel wheels ensures tractors are not used as a substitute for automobiles to run errands or to make more extensive trips than are convenient with horse-drawn carriages. The steel wheel rule also prevents large agricultural operations, reinforcing an emphasis on small farms that provide manual labor for all of the family members. Source  However... You still see these tractors on the road!

Lancaster County, PA Judgment Day sign
We pass this interesting "witness" sign on Hollander Road between New Holland and Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Reading it in passing makes it appear that, should you happen to be unprepared for Judgment Day, you can still rent a trailer for $25.00 a day!

When I see this sign I also think of an old song and a memory of my Dad and me traveling about the Kansas City area in his pickup truck back in the sixties listening to one of his favorite singers on the old push-button AM radio!  Video
While I'm at it I am smiling as I recall another Roger Miller song,

"The Blessing Of The Watermelon"

"Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.' And it was so" (Genesis 1:11). "Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food'" (Genesis 1:29). "He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth" (Psalm 104:14).

Lancaster County, PA watermelon planting
On yesterday's post we shared this photo along with a question as to what was being planted. As of "press time" we received a lot of answers but none were correct (apart from Matt's answer, a friend we had seen right after taking the photo, who admitted he knew in part because of talking to Brooksyne!) Our readers guessed tomatoes, tobacco, celery, potatoes, cabbage, strawberries. Now I have to admit that it's pretty hard to tell and apparently a similar method is used for a variety of plants, but actually we were witnessing the planting of watermelons!

Watermelon (seeded)We struck up a conversation with the farmer and mused as to what an appreciation we had for the watermelon. Many of us recall eating watermelon as kids and spitting the seeds. I've even participated in seed spitting contests, but was never the winner. In Belton, Missouri we had watermelon eating contests where kids and grown-ups alike enthusiastically contested against each other. Brooksyne's relatives on the mountain top in Arkansas grow delicious watermelons, mostly seeded as I recall. Of course like most kids we wondered if eating the seeds would cause a watermelon to grow inside us!

Fellow Missourian Mark Twain described the watermelon, "When one has tasted it, he knows what the angels eat."  I think our daughter, Ester, would agree with Mark Twain. When she was three years old recovering from yet another open heart surgery she would eat nothing the nurses brought to her.  Finally, after days of refusing to eat, the doctor gave into Brooksyne's plea to give her watermelon, and when they did she devoured it.

In recent years we have come to appreciate the seedlesss watermelon. Actually the "seedless" watermelon has some seeds but they're so soft you eat them without even being aware of it, kind of like a banana seed.
Or did you not know you have been eating banana seeds all along? Within a generation, most Americans won't even know that watermelons have seeds (at least the hard black kind), let alone the joy of eating them right off the rind and spitting out the seeds that is a childhood memory for many of us!

Ultimately seedless watermelons are grown from seeds and the process in the development of the "seedless" varieties is beyond my scientific understanding. However they are not genetically modified, as some might assume, but are hybrids that have been grown in the United States since the middle of the 20th century. (See below for a link to an explanation.)

Now watermelons aren't specifically mentioned in the Bible, along with other many other fruit we enjoy such as bananas and oranges. However early in the creation account we have this gift from God to the human race. "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food."

We enjoy preparing these messages for people from all over the world and often consider the many things we have in common regardless of where we live. And today I suppose most of us will be ingesting some "seed-bearing plant" according to God's provision in Genesis 1:29. Let us praise God from whom all blessings flow including the blessing of tasty sweet watermelon with or without seeds!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:
Father, we are abundantly blessed with foods of all kinds, both vegetable and fruit, meat and bread.  Thank you for those who diligently work the land and reap the harvest that we might place food on our tables and be nurtured physically.  You make the grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth.  All we have needed Your hand hath provided. Great is Your faithfulness, Lord, unto me.  Amen.

Doug and Marion 50th anniversary meal 6/27/11
Last night we had Doug and Marion, our neighbors, over for dinner. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. They started "going together" (AKA "going steady") when she was 13 and he was 14. They graduated in the same class in 1961 and married 10 days after graduation. They raised two daughters and are blessed with one granddaughter. Hebrews 13:4 states, "Marriage should be honored by all."  We honor Doug and Marion on the occasion of their anniversary!

Watermelon Planting in Lancaster County

Lancaster County, PA watermelon planting
It was a hot day so they rigged a cloth canopy over their work area to provide some shade.  When Brooksyne asked the farmer if he was planting seeded or seedless watermelons he told us this:  Every third watermelon is a "throw-away" watermelon with seeds which is used to pollinate the seedless watermelons.

Lancaster County, PA watermelon planting
Normally you won't find these Mennonites without their hats on but it was very hot!  Notice the man driving the tractor has a straw hat on, the other two left theirs under the wagon.

Lancaster County, PA watermelon planting
This particular branch of old-order Mennonites uses tractors with steel wheels (no rubber tires). Can anyone tell me why?  Tomorrow I will share what I understand to be the reason.

Watermelon (seeded)Geographical trivia: This last weekend Luling Texas had their annual "Watermelon Thump"  Luling has an interesting watertower!

For the curious here's an article about seedless watermelons.
