ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Fighting Greed"

"For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God" (Ephesians 5:5). "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Philippians 4:11).

"Tis the season to be … greedy, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la" (whoops, I don't think that's quite the way the song plays out in the stores this season, does it)!  Perhaps the word, "greed" is not in the heart of a Christmas song but yet the world's system turns up the volume on greed this time of year.  Colorful Ad fliers comprise more than half the newspaper, and that's not including the ads that fill the regular pages.  Many of us who make purchases online and use our email address find an increasing amount of email in our inboxes with "can't miss" sales.

The season we consider the most giving act in history (that God gave His only begotten Son) has become an excuse for greed, although many of you may be irritated that I would use such a word. After all we (well most of us) deal with some form of greediness and we would really rather not be reminded in an "encouragement" email!

I certainly fight greed in my life and the above Scripture portion has long challenged me.  I like things and there's always something new to like and want.  It's an ongoing battle.  The ads look so appealing and promise so much.

For many years now I've had a hankering for one of those "Bose" wave radio/CD players.  They just sound so good in the stores.  But I really don't need one and the set I have now has been working for several years.  I'm sure more than a few of you can identify with what I call the tyranny of the new, whether it's a Blu-ray, HDTV, SUV or scores of other "must have" products.

The daily text is blunt:
"For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." "Pleonektes", the underlying Greek word for "greed" means to "desire more". What stuns me about the verse is the statement that follows, "such a man is an idolater."  In another place Paul writes of "greed, which is idolatry."  Materialistic greed is the major form of idolatry in our time that we have to contend with just as the ancient people of God dealt with the various images we now identify as idols.

From the beginning Satan has tormented the human race with this resounding lie, "What God has provided is not enough."   At the very heart of Satan's first lie and temptation to Adam and Eve was that the outstanding beauty and bountiful provision in the Garden of Eden was not enough.  They fell for it and our fallen race has been living under the echo and effects of this lie ever since.

All believers do well to take to heart the Apostle Paul's confident assurance expressed in our second daily verse. "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."  He wrote this from prison and yet he exudes a deep abiding peace and assurance so lacking in our world today, even among many professed believers who have more than enough.  Today I want the contentment Paul had.  What about you?  Through Christ we can have it!  "Enough for me that Jesus saves, this ends my fear and doubt."  (Lidie H. Edmunds)

As I said, it's a battle I continue to fight and will as long as we live in this time of prosperity.  I just want to take God's Word seriously. I want to embrace the attitude of Jacob when he said, "God has been gracious to me and I have all I need" (Genesis 33:11).

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Thankful manDaily prayer:  Father, You are a gracious and generous Father who bestows on us bountiful gifts and sufficient supplies to meet our every need.  When we get our eyes off that which we have and set our heart's affections on material things that we don't have we can easily struggle with envy, discontentment, and jealousy which leads to an ungrateful attitude.  Thank you for the extras that we enjoy in life, but we especially thank You for the essentials that we experience such as salvation, eternal life and endless hope through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Keep our focus on the hallowed manger scene instead of the hollow mall setting as we celebrate another Christmas this year.  It is in the name of Jesus that we pray.  Amen.

Farm near Maytown PA 11/28/10
We passed this tidy farm near Maytown, PA yesterday.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Lessons From A Purring Cat"

"Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name" (Hebrews 13:15). "He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me" (Psalm 50:23).

We've had some cold weather in our area the last several days so I cranked up our coal stove practically to the maximum output. Last night I was sitting on the recliner beside the stove when our cat Dottie jumped up to sit on my lap.

Over the years I have periodically written about Dottie and displayed her photos.  She's not as prominent in our messages as our dog Roxie, who tends to be much more personable and outgoing.  But we have enjoyed her being part of our family for over nine years now, the longest we have ever had a pet.

Her mother was a wild barn cat who surprised us with a litter of newborn kittens in a dilapidated summer kitchen attached to our home. We were renting a 100 year old farm house at the time following our move down to Pennsylvania from New England
in early 2001.

Since my childhood I've really enjoyed hearing a cat purr when stroked gently or held closely.  Last night Dottie just purred away as I slowly stroked her back and face. I don't know the biological basis of a cat's purr but I take it to be a sign of contentment and appreciation. It's as if she is saying. "Ah, that is so nice."  But I also find myself getting so much satisfaction when I hold a purring cat.

Scripture teaches that our praise glorifies God and, really, aren't we also expressing our contentedness and thankfulness when we earnestly enter into praise? When we praise the Lord we rest in His presence and acknowledge His steadfast love and care.

Many have wondered, "What is the distinction between praise and thanksgiving?" It is commonly taught that praise is our worship toward God concerning who God is while thanksgiving is our worship toward God concerning what He has done. In practice though they often used interchangeably such as in our daily texts.

The writer of Hebrews ended his letter with a call to praise the Lord.  "Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name."

I encourage you to rest in the arms of our loving God and express your love for Him as you recall the ancient words of the Psalmist, "He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me." Let us, as His children, offer up our praise and thanksgiving to Him today!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Thankful manDaily prayer: Father, as we give praise to You we are offering our heartfelt thanks for who You are and all that You do on our behalf.  As we mature in our walk with You we realize that there are many occasions when we must offer a sacrifice of praise since it doesn't always come easily nor often enough. It is in those circumstances that we willfully choose to praise You out of obedient hearts desirous of pleasing You and glorifying Your name. May our words be fruitful and our thoughts praiseworthy in the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.

Summer kitchen: A summer kitchen is a small building, usually away from the main house, where the canning/preserving, washing of clothes, etc was done in the extremely hot weather, so as not to heat up the main house. At times, the summer kitchen was attached to the house, but was situated so that it didn't warm up the main part of the house. In our case it was attached at the side of our house in the back.

Dottie on pillow 2/23/10
Dottie manages to sleep soundly just about anywhere and often uses our coal stove's stone landing for a pillow.  But Ester took this photo when she wisely chose the kind of pillow cushion we humans enjoy!

We mentioned that we use a coal stove to heat our house (with occasional supplement from electric heat). We thought some of our readers might enjoy seeing how this system works.

2009 coal delivery to Weber's home
The coal is delivered and placed in a coal bin beside our small barn at the side of our house. I can normally load 4 tons at a time into the bin which lasts the winter. We use Pennsylvania anthracite coal to heat our home. The delivery man has to get up in the bed of the truck as it is being unloaded.  He has a hard job! Anthracite is a hard coal that burns clean and efficiently.

Coal enters coal bin
The coal slides from the truck down the chute into the bin.  I take the coal into the house in large buckets and fill a hopper behind the stove. From the hopper the coal is slowly fed to the fire. I also have to empty the ash pan and dispose of the ash daily. The stove essentially heats our entire home with a little electric heat assist on really cold days.

Coal stove burner
Inside the stove the coal on the burner plate is white hot.

Roxie and Dottie in front of stove
Roxie and Dottie enjoy laying together in front of the stove.

Brooksyne at coal stove
And when it's really cold Brooksyne enjoys working in front of the stove. She regularly expresses appreciation for this warm spot in our house!

"The Fruit Of Thankfulness"

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:4-7).

Today we will conclude our week of messages dealing with thankfulness by considering the fruit of thankfulness.

We enjoy listening to the Focus on the Family broadcasts and at this time of year they typically share touching testimonials of thankfulness by callers who record a brief message concerning an experience or perspective they share on thankfulness. Their stories are very moving and can have a transforming effect on the listener.

David Thanksgiving 11/25/10
Yesterday a man called in concerning a spiritual lesson he had learned from his three-year old son that especially touched me and will serve to illustrate our message today. In fact it's one of the best perspectives on thankfulness I have ever heard! If you care to listen to this and other similar stories from yesterday's broadcast we post a link to the Focus on The Family program following the message. Note: The above photo is not the little boy in the story below but rather three-year old David who spent the day with us yesterday, along with his family, as we enjoyed our day of Thanksgiving!

"I'm amazed at what my son Luke taught me about the power of thankfulness.  It happened when we took a long overdue family vacation.  His three year old word for thank you was "tonk ewe".  I must have heard fifty times in one day "tonk ewe" from a little boy who, like most 3 year olds, often times doesn't feel you're doing enough for him.

He would say, Tonk ewe for bringing me to the beach, Dad.  Tonk ewe for bringing my toys.   Tonk ewe for vacation.  Tonk ewe we can camp, and tonk ewe for my sippy cup and on and on it went.  I had to look away as I knew he wouldn't understand the tears welling up in my eyes.  I was instantly hit with thoughts of how much this vacation meant to him and wondered why I hadn't done it sooner.  At that moment I wished I could do have done more for Luke and all he had done was say, "Tonk ewe".

Later, after reflecting on that moment in prayer the Holy Spirit began speaking to me. You see, I'm not anymore spiritually mature than Luke.  My normal conversations with God reflect more about what I want from Him than what He has already done for me.  It made me think about how God must feel when I say, "Tonk ewe".  Could I bring a tear of joy to my Father's eyes for acknowledging all that He has done for me?  Could I touch the heart of the Creator of the universe by just saying, "Thank You"?  Thank You for daily food; thank You for the use of my eyes, my family, my friends, my home, for a job, for clean water every day, for the truth in Scripture, for Jesus' sacrifice. My list could go on and on.

The fruit of thankfulness is such a blessing.  It's called contentedness and peace.  God wants us to be grateful people toward Him and others (Psalm 100).  When we are thankful we experience contentment and peace. This Thanksgiving I encourage each of us to make a long list of the things that we've been given by God.  There won't be one blessing on that list that doesn't come from Him.  The more detailed the list the better.

One of the most astounding things Luke thanked me for was his sippy cup. The fact that he noticed something so small meant a lot to me and it will to God.  If a sparrow doesn't die without God knowing it,  you know He is a God who cares about details…. so take your list, go away by yourself, go through each item carefully with the One who gave it to you and just say, "Tonk ewe."

May the Lord regularly remind us of the value of thankfulness both by those expressing thanks as well as those on the receiving end. Surely our heavenly Father is blessed by the persistent, habitual, heart-felt expressions of gratitude from His children and we in turn also grow the healthy fruit of thankfulness which brings about contentment, peace and joy.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Thankful manDaily prayer: Father, we desire to be a grateful people.  We want to be mindful of our blessings and express thanksgiving regularly for that which we do not deserve but receive regularly because of Your merciful Spirit toward us.  It is far too easy to observe ingratitude in others and be blind to its presence in our own lives. When we're tempted to grumble prompt in us a grateful response instead, so that we will bear the fruit of thankfulness which brings about contentment, peace and joy.  In the name of Jesus we pray these things.  Amen.

"Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goal Posts of Life"  Video  This song really has absolutely nothing to do with the message or theme of thankfulness, but came to mind last night when I was watching a football game with some friends and the punter dropped the ball and then kicked it similar to a drop kick. This brought about a recollection from Joyce Reid, a friend from our church in New England, who shared about singing this song as a youth in the fifties. It's the world's only Christian football waltz!
As you listen to this song it speaks of "the big super bowl way up in the sky."

Now a trivia question for football buffs. When was the last successful drop kick in the NFL?  See video (10 seconds) or here for details. This morning this site was already updated to explain the play from last night's game!
