Look carefully below the bridge and you'll see the miniature figures of Stephen and Ester walking toward it. It is actually used as a bridge; US Route 11 crosses over it! (Note: podcast is not working for this edition) "All Hail The Power Of Jesus' Name"  "She (Mary) will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). "Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your Name—the Name You gave Me" (John 17:11). Yesterday in the course of our travels we visited a farmer's market near Harrisonburg, Virginia. Brooksyne headed toward a store that was filled with a great variety of colorful home-canned jams, jellies and vegetables. I was looking elsewhere and found myself drawn into a bulk foods store where I heard sacred music being played in the background. Though the inspirational recording initially drew me I was even more compelled to walk in and listen to the live voice that was singing along with the familiar words. It was a touching moment to hear sacred music being sung by a worker in a public setting rather than a church gathering.  Inspirational music has a long history of ministering to the hearts of God's people. "All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name" is one of the great hymns of the church. I often refer to music in this series though I am certainly aware that not every song is familiar to every reader. But I believe most of you, regardless of age, denominational background, or location, have likely  heard and sung this song. Brooksyne has shared an amazing story concerning this song in a number of settings and we would like to share it with you today. It was written in 1779 by Edward Perronet and has been an influential hymn ever since. It also has a place in missionary history, being greatly used in evangelistic endeavors. Missionary E.P. Scott wrote about a remarkable experience he had while trying to share the Gospel with a savage tribe in India.  Ignoring the pleadings of his friends, he set off into the dangerous territory. After arriving he met a large party of warriors who surrounded him, their spears pointed at his heart. Expecting to die at any moment, Scott took out his violin, breathed a prayer, closed his eyes, and began singing, "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name!"  When he reached the words, "Let every kindred, every tribe," he opened his eyes.  There stood the warriors, some in tears with every spear lowered.  Scott spent the next two years evangelizing the tribe.*   In God's providential care He was protected. The daily text is taken from our Lord's high priestly prayer before He went to the cross. It's essentially divided in three parts:     1) Jesus prays for Himself (John 17:1-5)     2) Jesus prays for His disciples (John 17:6-19)     3) Jesus prays for all believers (John 17:20-26) Jesus knew the tremendous price His initial disciples would pay in following Him. It is commonly believed that all but one of them (John) died the death of a martyr. He invokes the Name above all Names as he prays for them. "Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your Name—the Name You gave Me." There is power in the Name and all over this terrestrial ball (earth) the powerful Name of Jesus is being proclaimed on this day.  Some of our brethren will pay dearly for taking a stand, some even joining the ranks of the scores of martyrs. They are no less protected than we, since the ultimate protection of God's care is experienced when He ushers us into our eternal home.  That's where our real security lies since this life is but a brief journey. Today, whatever setting we're in, let us faithfully proclaim the all powerful name of Jesus! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer:  Jesus, Scripture tells us that at the last judgment those from every tribe and nation will bow upon hearing Your name.   Every tongue will confess that You are Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  We, as the redeemed, look forward to that glorious day when all of creation acknowledges You as Lord. But our hearts cry out for family members and other loved ones who, having denied Your power in this life, will be forced to acknowledge You as Lord on that final day. Renew our passion for reaching those in our generation with the Word of Life, so that they will joyfully proclaim Jesus is Lord in this life as well as the next. In the powerful name of Jesus we pray.  Amen. Brooksyne's Note: Edward Perronet died on Jan. 22, 1792 where he was pastoring a small independent church. The last words he spoke were "Glory to God in the height of His divinity!  Glory to God in the depth of His humanity! Glory to God in His all-sufficiency!  Into His hands I commend my spirit." To his final breath Mr. Perronet had clear Biblical doctrine and a sound mind. This is the way I'd like to go! * This is really an outstanding story but we really have been unable to find additional details. For instance we wonder if the tribesmen knew the language or did Scott sing in their native language? Did the beauty of the stringed instrument soften their hearts? The story is from "Then Sings My Soul" by Robert Morgan though you will find it quite widespread on the internet as well. Additional note: Today's missionary story and Scripture verse sure have prompted some additional ponderings on my part. Actually it's a verse I have read many times but never really recall focusing on. God's protective care is not arbitrary but is surely expressed in different ways. We may tend to limit it to just the sense of deliverance such as experienced by the missionary but in that case how do we deal with the scores of martyrs? In that case is God's protective care somehow faulty?  Absolutely not! Surely the protective care extends primarily to the spiritual realm and we will understand this better by and by. Some travel photos We are traveling to a family reunion in the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area and enjoying the journey. This colorful water tower is in northern Virginia along I-81. It would be neat to see how this was painted.  When you get up close you can see it is vibrant shades of red apples. At the Natural Bridge we also visited a Butterfly Garden and toured a cavern. This butterfly has some interesting protective markings that look like eyes. This huge watering pitcher is in Staunton, Virginia. It looks like they really do keep the flowers watered The other side of the bridge has gigantic flower pots! Can anyone tell us what this represents? "Rooted In Christ" "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:6,7). Today's photo is not usual for this site and likely will not be considered attractive by most observers!  It's a close-up of the root system in a corn stalk.  The Creator designed corn with two root systems; an inner, primary root (seminal) and as the corn develops a network of brace roots (nodal) for stabilization. With downpours, heavy winds, and other adverse conditions it is vital that the thin slender stalk has this strong dual root system to survive till harvest. Although we eat a few roots such as carrots, potatoes, beets and radishes, we give little thought to the root system. I've never viewed them as a thing of beauty, but roots are absolutely vital to a plant's health. To the left is the ginger root. Let's consider the word "rooted" from our daily text this morning. Paul draws on a familiar agricultural analogy. Perhaps he had in mind the teaching of our Lord, who warned of the deadly spiritual condition of rootlessness in the Parable of the Sower. Jesus said of the seed that fell on rocky places, "but since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away" (Matthew 13:21). Roots are also a vital part of the believer's life. Our daily verse tells us we are to be "rooted and built up in Him."  The Greek word for root is "rhizoo" and suggests stability, nourishment and life derived from contact with Christ ("in Him"). As a plant's roots sink deep into the rich soil for long term stability and nourishment, so too we should root our faith deep into sound Biblical doctrine and solid spiritual food that comes from knowing Christ. These well-nourished roots will keep us strong forever and forever. In Christ we find life-giving soil and a sustaining foundation. However, we have the responsibility to implement the means of grace that God has ordained for our "rooting." We all need a good, solid, ever-growing root system that reaches deep into the spiritual soil for the nourishment and stability that God has graciously provided. This will render us both faithful and fruitful. Developing and maintaining a solid spiritual root system is an active, lifelong pursuit of reading, studying, meditating and memorizing God's Word; regular communion with God through prayer; sharing with others of the good things of God; influencing others to come to faith.  As we grow in Him there is more and more that Christ reveals to us through spiritual leaders, everyday experiences, trials, and life's circumstances. One of the greatest ways we deepen our roots is by our Christian service and obedience to Christ. Are you rooted in Him? Are your spiritual roots expanding deeper and broader? I thank God for the inexhaustible supply of spiritual nutrition and stability available to the believer who is "rooted" in Christ!   Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Lord, we are so very grateful that our family roots are not the sole source of who we are nor does it dictate what we can accomplish. Our spiritual roots, because of our well-grounded faith in You, goes much deeper and spreads much broader. We are able to accomplish the impossible and overcome life's difficulties because our roots are connected to the Miracle Worker. May the water of Your Holy Spirit quench our thirst and the spiritual food from Your inspired Holy Word satisfy our hunger causing us to grow in spiritual maturity. We remain safe and securely rooted in You, Lord, though the winds and storms may shake us from time to time. It is in You that we live and move and have our being! Amen. Here's an interesting verse concerning Solomon: "He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish" (1 Kings 4:33). We are enjoying an abundance of locally grown corn. When I shuck sweet corn I am often annoyed by the messy, clinging silk that has to be carefully removed. Each silk is attached to a kernel and is the Creator-designed means of pollination without which we would not have juicy sweet kernels!  So remember, for every silk there is a kernel. A pleasant way to think about it is this; the more silk the more delicious bites of juicy corn you get to enjoy. It's nice to see the family working together. Listen to this message on your audio player. "Debt Crisis Solved!" "When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross" (Colossians 2:13,14). Here in the USA we have been hearing a lot about debt. I understand that this situation is true in many countries regarding government debt. Ours is now at a startling figure of 14 trillion dollars and rapidly rising which is over $46,000 for each citizen. So, my family's share of the national debt is nearly $140,000. Our politicians are hashing out ways of dealing with it and a big deadline looms tomorrow. The situation is so dire that although I am not being apocalyptic I have virtually no faith that there is a political solution out of this mess. However we have a far greater debt problem regardless of where we live. Ellis Crum penned the lyrics of a song that describes the sin dilemma that each person born into this world deals with:  "I owed a debt I could not pay".  It's an overwhelming debt that leads to a hopeless situation. I am of course speaking of sin's debt. So many live in ignorance and denial of this debt but it is a debt that every single human must deal with now or later. In fact it is a far more serious situation than the national debt of any country or the personal financial debt of any individual. How we deal with this debt has eternal consequences. But I am pleased to share today that upon study of the Holy Scriptures a full payment has been made! It is in fact the very heart of the gospel (Good News). "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit" (1 Peter 3:18). The certificate of debt has been canceled out. The stamp on the certificate of the redeemed reads, "Paid In Full". So how do we respond? First we believe by placing our faith in Christ and receiving His free gift. Then we declare verbally and through our life, "Jesus Paid It All, All to Him I Owe!"  In view of God’s mercy, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Him, which is our spiritual act of worship. (See Romans 12:1) Modern songwriter Graham Kendrick wrote this, Amazing love, O what sacrifice, the Son of God, given for me; My debt He pays and my death He dies, that I might live, that I might live. While some 300 years ago Isaac Watts wrote, Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Jesus, thank You for solving my debt problem by dying on the cross for me. I owed a debt I couldn't pay but, because of Your great love for me, You paid in full the debt of my sins. You made me alive together with You, having forgiven me all my transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against me. Your love is so amazing and so divine that it demands my soul, my life, my all.  In view of Your mercy, I offer my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You, which is my spiritual act of worship. Amen. By the time you read this the figures I used in the message will be obsolete! In our area I recently heard another one of those "man's solutions". A fad among the youth, especially in the inner city is wearing their britches down to their knees (also known as saggy pants). A plan was recently proposed by a school superintendent to purchase belts for the students at a cost of nearly $5,000.00 (as if they will actually wear them).
