"The Straight Way" "Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path" (Psalm 27:11). "They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness" (2 Peter 2:15). Reality shows are apparently quite popular right now and people go to extreme measures to get on them as we have seen on the news lately. I'm not exactly sure what a reality show is or if I've ever seen one. Somehow if there's a television camera present and money to be made it would seem to be less of a reality than being around people and family doing the day to day, even mundane things. I consider the blessing of associating with real people whom we actually know and who walk with integrity and uprightness. Such would be the testimony of my Uncle Jim and Aunt Frances who were married over 63 years and demonstrated a solid life. The last time I visited Lincoln I stayed overnight with them. I still recall Uncle Jim fixing me his signature pancakes before I left to return to the Kansas City area. Uncle Jim was a pilot of aircraft carriers in World War 2 and an interesting man. At that time for some reason we discussed roads and he told me that one of the main streets through the city of Lincoln is "O" Street and that it went on for 70 miles out of Lincoln absolutely straight! Having lived over 30 years in the Northeast I find that very interesting. In our part of the country I can hardly imagine a road for more than a mile without some bend or turn in the road! I do recall a few long stretches along both the Pennsylvania and Massachusetts turnpikes that are straight (probably for four or five miles) but that's due to a massive amount of cut and fill. Throughout the Bible following the straight way or straight path is emphasized. David prayed in Psalm 27:11, "Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path." Proverbs 11:5 states, "The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness." John the Baptist came to "Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him." And we often paraphrase the words of our Lord Jesus in regard to living by "the straight and narrow way" (This is taken from a phrase in Matthew 7:14). But in the second daily text the Apostle Peter speaks of those who "have left the straight way." What a sad condition. Today we will all make decisions and be confronted with temptations of various sorts. Our enemy wants to throw in a few curves that steer us off the straight way. But let us focus our attention on that which lies ahead as we stretch toward the mark of the prize of the high calling which is in Christ Jesus. Let us make a renewed resolve in our hearts to stay on the straight way today! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber Daily prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. You've given us the roadmap to follow through the guidance of Your Holy Scriptures. You've established that Your way is the only way to eternal life. It is the only way that we can have victory in our walk here on earth and the assurance of a victorious eternity in heaven. Just as John the Baptist went before You preparing straight paths, I thank You for going before me preparing the way for my journey. Though Scripture describes the Christian's walk as being a straight and narrow path it certainly has steep inclines and its route will also take me through deep valleys. If I wander off-course I'm grateful for Your Holy Spirit who reminds me of my commitment to follow You, once again calling me to my heavenly destination. Amen. Early this morning I drive up to Lincoln for my Aunt Frances' funeral with a meal to follow with family members. I hope to see Max Graves, a college friend, while in Lincoln and then return to Kansas City and visit with Aunt Mary, my dad's sister. I return to Pennsylvania early Friday morning and do not expect to get a daily encouragement message off. Ministry Update We periodically like to share an update regarding God's dealings in our lives, and feel with yesterday being the 13th anniversary of our Daily Encouragement ministry this is a good time to do so. I grew up here in the Kansas City area although I've been in the Northeast my entire adult life after college. For years I would come "home" to see my parents and felt a sadness as I got to the airport, stepped out on the curb and recalled how excited my Mom and Dad were to see me when they would pick me up, of course often with my family. Now all I have left in this area is a cousin (George Steincross) who I will see today and my Aunt Mary (from my dad's side) who I will visit with tonight.  The bbq pit at the Smokehouse BBQ. Genuine bbq is cooked slowly over a wood fire in a pit. Beef brisket is cooked in huge pieces and most prefer it sliced. However I prefer the "burnt ends", which are essentially the scrap pieces that get trimmed off, since I like the crispy taste!  My platter of BBQ burnt ends. Note the burned edges on the meat. For some reason KC BBQ is always served with plain, unbuttered toasted bread, the only thing I would change, preferring a fresh roll.  Yesterday I went to the TWA museum and thought this original training simulator was interesting.  This giant badminton birdie on the grounds of the Art Gallery were designed by the same artist who designed this in Philadelphia!  "The Scout" is Kansas City's most famous statue.
