"Teach Me Your Paths"

"Show me Your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long" (Psalm 25:4,5).  I will hear what the Lord will say; for He will speak peace to His people, to His godly ones…" (Psalm 85:8).

Old fashioned radioBilly Graham tells a story from his childhood: "Radio was just coming of age when I was a boy.  We would gather around a crude homemade set and twist the three tuning dials in an effort to establish contact with the transmitter.  Often all the sound that came out of the amplifier was the squeak and squawk of static.  It wasn't very exciting to listen to all those senseless sounds, but we kept at the controls with anticipation.  We knew that somewhere out there was the unseen transmitter, so if contact was established and the dials were in adjustment we could hear a voice loud and clear.  After a long time of laborious tuning, the far distant sound of music or a voice would suddenly break through and a smile of triumph would brighten the faces of everyone in the room.  At last we were tuned in!"

Do you occasionally feel like your communication with God is out of tune?  You know the direction you want to go but the present view makes your life's pursuit a bit more obscure.  In addition there seems to be a lot of "squeak and squawk of static" along the way.

The static of everyday life may include family conflict, work related stresses, physical challenges, financial hardships or anything that clouds the path God has laid out for us, as revealed throughout His Word.  It is tempting to pray that all of these obstacles be removed from our lives, yet it is in these challenges that God reminds us of His promises, reveals His power and shows His purpose to us.

I pray for myself and others that we will have a teachable spirit that guides us through the variables of life.  I pray that we will have an enduring spirit that sustains us until the clouds pass over and Zion is more clearly in view.

"Show me Your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me." Our daily text is an excellent lifelong verse.  Notice that the Psalmist's receptivity to being taught is expressed twice and he directs it to God.  Like the maturing Christian, he had a growing knowledge of the nature, character, and precepts of God, yet he continues to implore Him, "Teach me."

In doing so he awaits God's instruction on how His ways are to be implemented in his particular circumstance. This teachable spirit fundamentally acknowledges, "You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long." That's the outlook on life I sure want to have!

Even though God is the ultimate source of all teaching, He uses a variety of channels to teach us. His ways are fundamentally discovered in His Word, but the lifelong student will recognize the input from other believers, nature and providential circumstances as well.

Moses, at 80 years of age and the leader of God's people, made this request to God, "If you are pleased with me, teach me Your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You" (Exodus 33:13). Do you have a teachable spirit today?

Be encouraged today,

Daily prayer: Father, we know that we must do more than just read Your Word, but we must apply Your truths so that we see Your Spirit at work in the daily challenges we encounter.  The Israelites looked to You for guidance in the cloud by day and the fire by night. They learned when to wait and when to walk.  It is in the waiting times that we learn endurance for the present and it is in the walking times that we learn to trust You for the future. Whether You are moving us forward or keeping us still our hope is in You all the day long.  Amen.

Friends for dinner 3/6/10
Saturday evening Ester invited some friends over for a prebirthday gathering (her 21st birthday is tomorrow.)

Hat & caneSaturday afternoon we visited an old 1,800's farm house up for auction in our area.  It was well maintained but appeared as if it had not been updated for 75 years. The owner still used a wood stove to cook with and each room was furnished in such a way that it reminded me of going to my grandparent's house in the mid-sixties.  Here's the online sales flyer for this auction with more photos. (I am sure this link will have a limited life)

"The Son Is The Radiance Of God's Glory"  Video   An outstanding Acapella musical rendition of Hebrews 1:1-4.  Turn your volume up and follow along!

"In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So He became as much superior to the angels as the Name He has inherited is superior to theirs."

"God Has Spoken By His Prophets"  Yesterday we sang this hymn for the first time that I ever recall. It's sung to the same tune as "Love Divine, all Loves Excelling." I was unable to find an online version to share. It has powerful lyrics.

God has spoken by His prophets
Spoken His unchanging Word
Each from age to age proclaiming God
the One, the righteous Lord.
In the world's despair and turmoil
One firm anchor holds us fast
God is King, His throne eternal
God the first, and God the last

God has spoken by Christ Jesus
Christ, the everlasting Son
Brightness of the Father's glory
With the Father ever one
Spoken by the Word Incarnate
God of God, before time was
Light of light, to earth descending
He reveals our God to us

God is speaking by His Spirit
Speaking to the hearts of all
In the ageless Word expounding
God's own message for us all
Through the rise and fall of nations
One sure faith yet standing fast
God abides, His Word unchanging
God the first and God the last
