Jesus Is Lord

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"Jesus Is Lord"

"Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11). "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord" (1 Peter 3:15).

Several years ago Brooksyne and I toured a large bread bakery in Chambersburg Pennsylvania that takes an unashamed, bold stand for Jesus Christ. Its main office building has a prominent message weaved right into their carpeting declaring in large letters, "JESUS IS LORD".

I rarely see the declaration "Jesus is Lord" without thinking of the traditional chorus, "He is Lord." As a young adult Christian this became one of my favorite choruses because it is a declaration of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Many of you have sung it, regardless of where you live:

He is Lord, He is Lord,
He is risen from the dead and He is Lord.
Every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess,
That Jesus Christ is Lord.

This well-known chorus is clearly based on the daily text (or perhaps a similar text in Romans 14:11). It is a portion of what many Bible students believe to be an ancient creedal statement of the early church. That is, a statement which is regularly recited by early believers in learning and expressing their faith. Some feel that it may have been an early hymn of the church, set to music to teach and reinforce sound doctrine. I like hymns that present solid Biblical truth and sound theology. An excellent example of this type of hymn, although seldom sung in most churches today, is "One Day" or "I Know Whom I Have Believed".

There is coming a time when every person who has ever lived will fall on bended knee, whether in heaven, on earth, or under the earth. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

This confession is the fundamental point of distinction between believer and nonbeliever. Paul wrote, "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). This confession comes by the Spirit, for "No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:3).

The future universal confession will be an indescribably exultant time for all who have made the confession in this life and lived for the Lord. As an old song states, "What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see..."

But those who did not confess with their lips or their lives, "Jesus is Lord" while living on this earth will do so at the Great Judgment. There will be no excuses, no more delays, no bargaining with God. The most virulent mockers
and avowed atheists will on bowed knee confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Unrepentant sinners from all the ages will on bended knee confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

The word for confess means "to admit openly, to acknowledge, to recognize, to acclaim." This universal confession will be "to the glory of God the Father."

I will have no choice regarding this matter at the Great Judgment. So I would sure rather do this now as a willful choice coming to Christ as a repentant sinner and place my faith in Him as I make my confession of faith personal. I also encourage you to do so today so that you may personalize the chorus by saying or singing:

He's my Lord, He's my Lord
He is risen from the dead and He's my Lord.
For my knee has bowed,
And my tongue confessed,
That Jesus Christ is Lord.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer: Jesus, Name above all names, I confess with my lips and believe in my heart that You are the Lord and Savior of my life. You died for my sins and rose to life making it possible for me to die to sin and rise to new life in You. I thank You for the victory that is mine as I, in my heart, set Christ apart as Lord, not only in this world but in the world to come. Amen.

Two lesser sung stanzas of "He is Lord":

"He is Judge, He is Judge! He will come again someday and be our Judge!
At His mighty throne everyone shall stand When Jesus Christ is Judge." (Acts 17:30-31)

"He is King, He is King! He is ruling up in heaven for He is King!
Let us sing our praise to His holy name; Oh, Jesus Christ is King."
(Rev. 19:11-16)

Amish familyYesterday we shared about meeting Ira Wagler, a local businessman who wrote a book about his experience growing up Amish. Some New Jersey friends sent us this video which is an amazing account of a young Lancaster County Amish family who were filmed by the BBC. This documentary has many scenes that we view as we travel in the eastern part of Lancaster County during our chaplaincy visits, including the shopping trip to the Target store. The background music is uplifting and will bless you! This Amish family is very similar to the Amish family we often mention whom we befriended about ten years ago.  Video  (59 minutes)

Our other blogs:
"A Daily Prayer" - A blog simply posting the daily prayer. We keep this up each day since it's merely the prayer from the Daily Encouragement Net message!
"A Little Foolishness" - Humor/satire blog (a great outlet for non-serious writing but at times with a subtle message!) (Note: This material is satire!)
"Clear Minded" - Longer, periodic articles on specific issues impacting the faithful believer and church. (Actually this is my intent but I haven't done much with it!)
"Hymns of Hope" - Brooksyne along with two friends made a CD using classic hymns. Brooksyne tells the background story of the 11 hymns. All of these songs are also available for download on the site.
