"Joseph threw himself upon his father and wept over him and kissed him" (Genesis 50:1). He was the kind of man that good men talk about The way he showed his faith was how he lived it out His hands were rough and calloused and his shoes were old and torn And the lines that framed his smile were lines so well and deep and worn So what will be remembered of what he left behind? What will stand the test of time?  Today is my dad's birthday. Eugene passed away in 1998 and we would be celebrating his 95th birthday today. I am very thankful for him and the many life lessons he taught me, mostly by example since he was a man of few words. I still miss him and am particularly reminded of him at certain times when I do something that we did together. I also have several items I treasure that were his, such as many of his tools and the worn pocketknife with the broken blade that he always carried. A skill my dad passed on to me was a common sense in regard to home repairs. Early this morning I took our dishwasher apart and determined that it needs a new part to work properly and was able to order the part online. It's rewarding to be able to repair an appliance and save the cost of an expensive service call or a new dishwasher! * My dad was a pretty serious guy but when he held his grandchildren he was all smiles (as seen in this photo with Ester). The daily verses describes the strong emotion that Joseph experienced when he and his father Jacob were reunited and then when Jacob died. The Scriptures record the deep love this father and son had for each other. Many years earlier Jacob was deceived and led to believe that Joseph had been slain by a wild animal when of course he had actually been sold into slavery. On hearing the report of his death the Scripture records, "Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'in mourning will I go down to the grave to my son.' So his father wept for him" (Genesis 37:34,35). Joseph and his father Jacob were separated for many years, and during that very long period, Jacob thought his son was dead. Today's first verse captures this unimaginable moment of bliss for both father and son as they reunite; Joseph, now in his prime and Jacob, his aged father: "As soon as Joseph appeared before him he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time." Perhaps one of the reasons the adventuresome story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50) captivates us is that emotions are revealed through the entire narrative, including his scandalous brothers. After seventeen years of being reunited with his father, once again we see Joseph's raw emotions as he is now dealing with the cold, hard truth of his father's death. What a moving description in our second daily text, "Joseph threw himself upon his father and wept over him and kissed him" (Genesis 50:1). Today our encouragement to you is simply this. Let those whom you love know it by your words and actions. These are the things that matter most. If you err, err on the side of going overboard in expressing your love. What a joy to hear my daughter spontaneously say, "I love you Daddy!" You can be sure I don't say, "Alright Ester, I believe you've made yourself clear on that, you don't have to keep repeating it." A great legacy we can all leave is a legacy of love. Oh, the ties that bind and leave behind a legacy A legacy of love... I am also quite sure our heavenly Father never wearies of hearing these expressions of love from His children as well! Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber  Daily prayer: Father, we know that everyone who lives leaves a legacy. An obituary is a bird's eye accounting of what they valued in life and often reveals what their children value as a result. We want to leave a legacy of love, the purest and highest kind of love, that can only be found in the Person of Jesus Christ, who laid down His life that we might be forgiven and enjoy eternal life. We want to remain steadfast in our Christian convictions so that we pass on that which makes a hopeful, positive, and eternal difference in one's journey here below and up above. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.Administration note: We are late today due to tech problems as well as other interruptions! Brooksyne's note: I consider the teaching today to be a bookend legacy in Stephen's and my memories. We remember this day for Stephen's dad's birth in 1919 and my dad's death in 2000 so this marks his 14th year to be with the Lord. He (Brooklyn Sherrell) left many good things for me to remember in the legacy of his fatherhood, primarily he led our family in the ways of the Lord. I will be forever grateful for that!  This weekend we joined several friends from our church at a Sweetheart Banquet at the Abundant Living ministries barn. On the way home we hit icy roads and drifting snow so we turned around and drove through scenic Lititz PA where they were having a Fire and Ice Festival with many ice carvings. Our favorite was this stage coach.  We had more snow on Saturday and now are waiting for the big melt. Our neighborhood stray cat looks like she's checking into using the outhouse planter!  Yesterday afternoon we stopped by to see a friend's mother to view a very unusual flower. Do any of our readers recognize it? (It will be used as an illustration in a future message.)
