"The Soul Cleansing Blood"

"The blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin." "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:7b,9).

Yesterday I did some deep scrubbing. Brooksyne had cleaned out some paint brushes in a utility sink and the paint had dried hard at the bottom of the plastic tub. I finally got tired of looking at it and went to work with Ajax and scrubbed it clean. (Editor's note:  I see my strategy worked!) This called to mind an infinitely greater form of cleansing
!

I was listening to a news program yesterday and heard that a tick-borne infection known as Babesiosis, can cause severe disease and even death, is becoming a growing threat to the U.S. blood supply.

There are currently no diagnostic tests approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that can detect the infection before people donate blood.  So, of course, this is a growing concern to health officials and the potential patient in need of a blood transfusion.

For the past 30 years or so we've been aware that that the deer tick can cause Lyme's disease so it comes as little surprise that another infectious tick has made its deadly debut. Certainly none of us wants to be attacked by this blood sucking parasite that leaves its deadly venom; invisible on the outside yet spreading its poison throughout the body, potentially shutting down organs.

But the story of the babesia infection makes me think of another kind of deadly infection; not always visible on the outside but always poisonous within; a condition we all deal with. The infection of our sin-sick souls. This poison spreads rapidly through one's soul affecting  body, mind, spirit, and emotions. If ignored and unconfessed it will bring about spiritual death and eternal damnation.

The Bible tells us that the entire human race is in need of a blood cleansing. In fact we constantly need it. The apostle John is writing to his spiritual children in the daily text. We who believe can each include ourselves as among those children. The first part of our text states,
"The blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin."

He goes on to write, "If we confess our sins." The disciple identifies with us as he chooses to write in the first person plural pronoun thus including himself. The root word for "confess" means "to be in agreement, to acknowledge." God's promise to forgive is conditional upon the repentant person acknowledging their sins and seeking God's forgiveness.

What a confident assurance this verse provides as it describes God's attributes and His promises in this matter. Let me outline it:

Two immutable (unchanging) attributes of God:
        1. His faithfulness
        2. His justice

    Two immutable promises from God
        1. Forgiveness from sins
        2. Purification from all unrighteousness

We need to regularly meditate on each of these  truths.  It really is good news isn't it! Today let us rejoice together that our souls can be cleansed because of God's faithfulness, His divine justice, and because of the soul cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man
Daily prayer: Father, may our spirit be like that of David's who acknowledged his sin to You and did not cover up his iniquity. You forgave the guilt of his sin and cleansed him from unrighteousness. You forgive every sinner who confesses his or her need to be saved from their sin, and You forgive every believer who acknowledges that they have sinned and come short of Your glory.  Thank You for Your amazing grace that brings about our spiritual cleansing.  Through the precious blood of Jesus we pray.  Amen.
