"The Way Of Truth"

"I have chosen the way of truth" (Psalm 119:30).

Early this morning I received a rather distressing email from a friend. She works as an office manager in a dental office and was disturbed that someone wrote a fraudulent online review concerning the services of the dentist she works for. I called her after receiving the email to encourage her and offer some advice. This also happens to be our family dentist, a Christian who seeks to operate his practice with Biblical integrity.

Based upon office records and the info in the review (which most would recognize as a farce at face value) she is certain that this never happened. Nevertheless the dentist and his staff are concerned about reputation and the mistaken impression a potential patient may have after reading the review.

The breakdown of truthfulness is an epidemic at all levels of society. I'm sure the same situation exists wherever these encouragement messages are read. Truthfulness is foundational to order in society. Saint Augustine said, "When regard for truth has been broken down or even slightly weakened, all things will remain doubtful."

The breakdown in truthfulness is rampant in the family, community, court systems, and nations. It's certainly true in the business world and sadly it is present even among professing Christians within the Church.

The foundational importance of truthfulness is stated in the Ninth Commandment, "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." The simple Proverb says, "The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please Him" (20:23).

In the daily text as the Psalmist declares, "I have chosen the way of truth." That's a statement that we do well to memorize and apply to our lives. The sense of the Hebrew word for "way" is "a course of life or mode of action."

Based upon the Scriptures I see two ways of understanding this verse:

1) The sense of following the way of Christ who stated, "I am the way, the truth, the life" (John 14:6). The "way of truth" was a description used by Peter (2 Peter 2:2).

2) The sense of being truthful in all our ways. Paul instructed the Ephesians "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body" (Ephesians 4:25). And we find this simple command, "Do not lie to one another" (Colossians 3:9).

May God give each of us a daily resolve to choose the "way of truth."

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man
Daily prayer: Father, I choose the way of truth, for it is also the way of light, for Jesus Himself said, "I am the Light."  The Word declares that you hate "a lying tongue". Darkness lurks where deception and falsehood exists and becomes the breeding ground for all sorts of evil.  Father, I ask You to shine Your searchlight on the contents of my heart and reveal the motive for my actions.  Help me to purge all that dishonors Your name.  I invite Your light to dispel the darkness of my soul.  Amen.
